 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D) 中选出最佳选项。

①Does a lake on fire sound impossible ? If you think that water can't burn, you need to learn more about pollution.

②Let's go and see Bellandur Lake in the city of Bengaluru in India. Bengaluru is the center for many heavy industries. Electrical and electronic goods, computer parts and parts for planes and space rockets are produced there. Much of the waste from these and a large amount of the wastewater from local people run into the lake.

③These harmful mixed things have led the lake to become covered with a thick white foam(泡沫) that looks like snow when seen from far away. When the level of the water rises, the foam does too and covers nearby areas, even roads. When a fire breaks out on the lake, it is both frightening and dangerous. People who live or work near the lake also get seriously il l because of the pollution.

④The fire has drawn a great deal of attention recently, but burning lakes are nothing new. Pollution mainly happens in developing countries like India today. In the past, it mainly took place in Europe and America. Cuyahoga River, a river in America, had caught fire at least 13 times. The fire that caused the most attention was in 1969 when oil- covered areas on the river were set on fire by sparks(火花) from a passing train. The fire reached a height of over five floors and burned for about half an hour. By that time, people in America were more aware of its dangers and wanted to change.

⑤As a result, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) was founded in 1970 and the Clean Water Act (1972) was put into use. This Act required all rivers throughout America be clean enough to safely allow swimmers and fish to pass through by 1983. Due to these efforts, the Cuyahoga River has never had another fire and over 60 different species of fish live in the river.

⑥If history is a guide, will it be possible for people in India to bring an end to the pollution by changing the laws in their country, too? Like many nations, it's necessary to raise awareness of environmental protection among the general public. All of us must act!

If you are looking for somewhere special to visit in London, we may have the answer for you: Sir John Soane's Museum. The museum is one of London's best-kept secrets, and it's well worth a visit. Sir John, a great architect(建筑师), lived in London during the 18thcentury(1753—1837), and the amazing thing is that his house is exactly the same as he left it. In fact, visiting the house is just like stepping back in time.

There are three floors which are open to the public. You can start on the first floor. This was Sir John's work area. You can ask the guards about the paintings on the walls as they tell you something about his family and life. And don't worry about the guards as they are really nice and helpful. Next, you can go downstairs to the ground floor. Here you can see his rich collection of paintings. For example, there is a series(系列)of interesting paintings about 18th century life in London. Now comes the last part, the underground floor. It's full of thousands of valuable objects, such as sculptures(雕塑)and models of famous buildings from all over the world. Walking around this part of the house is a bit like being on a treasure hunt, as you can find things hidden away in secret corners. Anyway, you'll have to go there yourself to see.

Sir John Soane's Museum is a very small place. It's only about ten minutes' walk from the British Museum. There is a free hour-long guided tour every Saturday at 2:30 pm, but the best thing is just to walk about by yourself. So now you know where to go next time you're in London. We guarantee that it's an experience you won't forget!

 阅读下列短文,从每小题的四个选项中选出最佳选项。

Look around and you'll see people busy on their smartphones. Smartphones do make our lives easier. But have you thought about what they mean to your eyes?

According to a study, most of the British people own smartphones and they spand an average(平均) of two hours using them every day. There has been a 35% increase in the number of people in the UK who suffer from short- sightedness(近视) since smartphones were introduced there in 1997.

Staring at smartphones for a long time gives you dry eyes. When looking at something in the distance, your eyes automatically blink(自动眨眼) a certain number of times. However, when you look at things closer to your face, the blink slows down. This reduces the amount of tears and causes discomfort(不舒服) in your eyes. Another bad habit is using smartphones in dark rooms before going to sleep. If you look at a bright screen while your pupils(瞳孔) become larger , too much light enters your eyes. This can do harm to the eyes and cause a disease called glaucoma(i'i光眼).

While you're probably not going to stop using your smartphone, there are a few things you can do to protect your eyes. Hold your phone at least 30 centimeters away from your eyes when using it. Take a break every hour and try the following: look at something at least five meters away from you and then focus on the tip of your nose. Repeat this several times. It should reduce the discomfort in your eyes.
