    "Amy! Milk!" Mama called.

Milk. It was Amy's turn to get it. Amysighed and shut her first-aid (急救) book.

Amy tied the cow closeto a tree. Somewhere down the mountain, some volunteer doctors were teachingmedical skills to village nurses. Amy heard Betty dive off hours ago. "Sheshould have taken me with her. She thinks I'm too young. "Amy thought. "Butshe's wrong. I am already 15!"

Amy carried the milk back to Mama, thenwandered up the road. Roy, a village boy, was trying to stand on a horse'sback. "No wonder they don't trust kids with anything important," Amythought.

She had just turned away when she heard aheavy fall and a few cries. Roy was on the ground. "Roy!" The kidsnearby ran towards him. "Get Betty," one said. Amy shook her head. "Betty'sgone to the city."

The kids didn't know what to do. Amy ran toRoy and saw one of his legs out of shape. A broken leg! She remembered what thefirst-aid book said about it.

"Victor!" Amy called to one ofthe boys. "Go get Roy's mama, and find someone with a truck," Sheturned to the others. "Give me your shirts. We need something to tie hisleg with."

Amy then found a strong, straight stick. She carefully wrapped the shirts around Roy's leg and the stick. Roy cried outin pain. "I know it hurts," Amy said softly. "But this will holdit still until you get to the hospital."

When Amy was done, she looked up and sawRoy's mama and a man watching beside a truck. "Thank you,Amy, " Roy's mama said. Amy helped them lift Roy into the truck, then they drove down the hillside towards the hospital.

The next day, Betty came to Amy's home. "Iheard what you did," Betty said. "You kept your head in an emergency. That's an important skill. "

Amy's face turned red. "I wasafraid..."

Betty shook her head. "It's OK for anurse to be afraid, as long as she has a clear head. The volunteer doctors arecoming tomorrow with vaccines. We need some more hands. Can you help?"

"I'd love to." Amy replied atonce.

"Come early, then. There is a lot to learn."

Amy smiled. "I'll bring my first-aidbook."

 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。

On a summer day in 1948, a Swiss man named George de Mestral took his dog for a walk in the mountains. When they came home, George discovered that he and his dog were both covered with burrs (带芒刺的小果实).

As an engineer, George naturally began to wonder how the burrs stuck (刺入) to his dog and his clothes. Then he looked at them carefully. He found that the burrs had little hooks (钩子), which allowed them to catch on to things like clothes. George realized that he could use this finding to create a new way to fasten (扣紧) things.

It is a very long journey from the first idea to the final product. It was easy to find materials that could stick together, but finding materials that would continue to do so after years of use was difficult. George tested a very large number of different materials and production methods. After years of research and work, he invented what is known today as Velcro. In 1955, George started Velcro Industries to turn his idea into a product. In a few years, the product became popular around the world.

Today Velcro is used everywhere. It's used in backpacks, jackets, wallets, children's toys, etc. It even turns up in places you wouldn't expect. For example, Velcro has been used by NASA for astronauts' space suits. The product was also used to hold the heart together during the very first artificial heart transplant (人工心脏移植).
