Joel Sartore is a writer, teacher, and photographer. His words and beautiful images show his love of photography and of the natural world. 

Question 1: How did you become a National Geographic photographer?

My first job was for a newspaper. After a few years there, I met a National Geographic photographer. He liked my photos and said I should send some to the magazine. So I did. That led to a one—day job. And that led to a nine—day job, and so on.

To get into National Geographic, you have to give them something they don't have. It's not enough just to be a great photographer. You also have to be a scientist, for example, or be able to dive under sea ice, or spend maybe several days in a tree. 

Question 3: Is it hard to get a job as a photographer today?

It's now harder to work for magazines. Technology makes it easy to take good pictures, which means there are more photos and photographers. Also, the Web is filled with photos from all around the world that are free, or cost very little. These photos are often good enough to be put in books and magazines. What the magazines need to do these days is to pay for these photos. 

Question 4: I want to be a photographer. Do you have any advice for me?

Advice? Well, work hard. Be passionate (热情的)about every project you work on. Take lots of pictures in different situations. Look at others' photos thoughtfully and learn from them. And be curious about everything. There's something to photograph everywhere. 

Yan Hong is a 33-year-old traditional handicraft（手工艺品）designer from Chengdu. Several years ago, she decided to give up her job at a hospital to do something that she truly loved to do. But at that time she didn't expect her handicrafts to become a hit in China and abroad.

Working for one's dream requires double the effort. She usually begins to work at 9 a.m. It often doesn't end until 1 a.m. or even later. But she never regrets pursuing（追求）her dream. Because she is always working with metal materials and sharp tools, Yan Hong's fingers are often covered in small cuts. And she is often faced with difficulties when trying to create handicrafts to match traditional clothing. One big problem is to find the materials that can be used to recreate these classical fashions.

Today the young artist has become a master of handicrafts. Yan Hong is good at using recycled materials. No matter how common the materials are, she is always able to create art from them. With her "magic hands", she once completed a set of headwear of the Miao ethnic（少数民族）group from 68 cans. Many of her artworks are inspired by traditional Chinese culture. One of her most popular productions is based on Chinese classic text Shan Hai Jing, also known as the Classic of Mountains and Seas.

These beautiful handicrafts have made Yan Hong popular in China. Meanwhile, her artworks have also found a large number of fans around the world. In 2019, she was invited to give a speech at the University of Oxford in the U.K. In 2022, she went to Milan Fashion Week at the invitation of foreign designers.

"It is a great honor for me to introduce traditional Chinese handicrafts to the world." she said proudly. However, she did not think her success was mainly because of her great craftsmanship（手艺）, but thanks to our "mother country's big influence in the world."

She thinks more people from other countries have started to be interested in Chinese culture as our country becomes stronger. And she feels very thankful to live in such good times and have a chance to show our traditional culture to the world.

This is Mr. Black. He works at the radio station. He gets up at 6:00 a.m. and rides to work. It takes him about twenty minutes to get to work. He starts work at 7:00 a.m. He often plays sports when he is free. His favorite sport is tennis.

This is Mrs. White. She is a mother of two boys. She gets up at 6:30 a.m. every day and makes breakfast for her two sons. Then she makes the bed, cleans the house and drives them to school. She often goes to the supermarket (超市). She likes shopping.

This is Miss Smith. She is an office(办公室) worker, She gets up at 8:00 a.m. from Monday to Friday. She often walks to work it takes her about a quarter of an hour to get to her office. She starts work at 9:00 a.m. After work, she usually goes swimming with her friends.

Nowadays, a lot of people often find it very hard to fall asleep at night. Why do they often have this problem? Because they are usually under too much {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (压力) from their work and life. In fact, the color of their bedroom walls can help {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (解决) this problem. 

Grey may be the most popular color at {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (现在)，but painting your bedroom grey could actually stop you from getting your eight {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (小时) sleep. Grey should not be considered when you want to decorate (装饰) your bedroom, according to a sleep expert at mattress company called Sealy. And {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (虽然) it's dark while you are sleeping in your room, the light from streetlamps and an untidy room could both {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (影响) your sleep. If you want to paint the walls of your bedroom, you should {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (避免) grey and other colors like red, brown and purple. 

Sealy told Femail, "While your room is dark when you go to sleep, you may {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (花费) an hour or more in your bedroom with the light on before going to sleep. At this time, the color of your bedroom can prevent you from going to sleep. The color that is too bright can make you feel {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (激动的), which can last long after you've turned the light off and can no longer see the color. The best choice of the color for your bedroom is blue, which is {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (容易地) picked up by ganglion(神经节细胞) in the retinas(视网膜) of your eyes. The cells then send a message directly to your brain, telling you that you're in a calm environment. 

I arrived home from work, but my mind was still busy. I was going to perform a very important experiment, but I had spent the whole day worrying about it. And I wanted to shake off my worries very much. So after dinner, I made a cup of hot chocolate, sat on my sofa, and opened a page. Almost at once, my mind left behind the experiment and went into a wonderful world different from my daily life. It was exactly what I needed.

 Growing up, I was actually never a big fan of novels. My classmates would be crazy about the latest novel, while my copy sat collecting dust on a bookcase. Instead, I would choose to read through the books about school lessons. After I started graduate school, extra reading didn't interest me at all, but I spent most of my time at school working on research papers and my mind couldn't process nonfiction(非小说类纪实作品) books at home. So I knew that I needed to find a way to enjoy reading again.

 To help me stick to it. I made a New Year's resolution: I would read two fiction books per month. The result was that I loved fiction almost at once, along with many unexpected results including ones that are good for my schoolwork.

★some of the best books I read were historical fiction books. I learned life in different countries, as well as challenges which people there faced during difficult periods in their histories. The books have helped me build sympathy and understanding, with an unexpected advantage: I' ve started to think more deeply about the different types of the scientific problems in my study and could se rve them with all my heart.

This week, we are going to learn about great inventions in the world. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} The inventions were trying to make something completely different. Here is one story. 

In 1945, at the end of the Second World War, Percy LeBaron Spencer, an American scientist, was working on a machine to produce powerful radio waves. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} The machine was able to cook things! Percy called it a microwave. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}However, the first microwave weighed around 350 kilograms and was as big as a fridge! {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Now millions of homes have microwaves. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. So we can say that the microwave has changed the way we live.
