牛津版(深圳·广州)初中英语九年级上册第八单元测试卷

阅读理解

An American woman living in Wisconsin (威斯康星州) offered to teach English to a Japanese woman who had moved into the same community. "Before each lesson, and on each and every visit," the American reported, "the Japanese lady brought me a gift-a book, some paper sculpture, flowers, or candy. It was embarrassing."

Unknowingly, this American was experiencing a part of protocol (礼仪) rooted centuries deep in the Japanese culture.

In America, valuable gifts are surely out. A proper (适宜的) behaviour on a gift is to take the person to dinner, or to an entertainment or a sporting event. On the contrary, gift-giving is a custom in Japan. According to Business Tokyo magazine, among the Japanese "gift-giving is a necessity, not only a small thing as in the West". In Japan the proper gift is thought to express the giver's true friendship, gratitude, and respect far better than words can, So if you plan to visit Japan or to have Japanese visit you here, be prepared.

So you know nowadays gift-giving plays a very important role in society. Now let's see what happens in other countries.

Australia is known for its kindness and honesty. So proper gifts, such as a business diary, a paperweight, or a coffee cup might be presented as a memento (纪念品) of a business meeting. At a trade show, T-shirts, ties, baseball caps, or a pin may be proper mementos. Anything more than these types of gifts could cause embarrassment.

A、The gifts were so small and poor. B、The Japanese woman was not good at learning English. C、She didn't know how to teach the Japanese woman. D、The Japanese woman brought gifts on each and every visit.
(2)、Which of the following CANNOT be presented as a memento of a business meeting in Australia?
A、A business diary. B、A coffee cup. C、A gold watch. D、A paperweight.
(3)、Which country is NOT mentioned in the passage?
A、The USA B、Japan C、China D、Australia
(4)、What may the passage talk about in the following paragraphs?
A、Why Australians are kind and honest. B、What the difference between America and Australia is. C、What happens in other countries. D、How an Australian should behave in America.
(5)、What does the passage show?
A、People should give some valuable gifts when going to different countries. B、Gift-giving is an important kind of protocol nowadays. C、Bringing gifts often makes a giver embarrassed. D、An expensive gift will make an Australian angry.

Wordle is a free online word puzzle game. You needn't pay or download(下载) it on the computer.You can just visit the website(网址) and start playing right away. The game was created by an IT worker Josh Wardle as a gift for his partner who loves playing games.

The easy rule of Wordle attracts many people. Wordle challenges people to find a five- letter word in six guesses. After each guess, the letters turn into different colours. Green means it's the right letter and it's in the right place. Yellow means the letter is in the word but in the wrong place. Grey means the letter's not in the word at all. Everyone plays only one word a day, so players are excited to solve it. If they manage to guess in the first or second try, they can't wait to show their results on Twitter. Wordle has suddenly become a huge part of people's lives. That's why Wordle has been sold to the New York Times for more than a million dollars.

Here are some tips for you to win in fewer guesses. For your first guess, it's a good way to pick a word that has at least two vowels(元音) with popular consonants(辅音)r,t and s. If you have a yellow k in the second place of your first guess, you might try placing it in the fifth place- many five- letter words end with ck. It is also helpful to think of letters often appearing in sets of two or three, like tr/ ai/ ing. Don't reuse grey letters and don't forget letters can appear twice.

Wordle attracts lots of players since it is such a simple game. But will players keep being crazy about it in the future? Let's wait and see.

①As a kind of traditional Chinese art, paper cutting has a long history. The first and earliest paper cutting was found in China about 1,500 years ago. But the traditional art is at risk of disappearing (消失) now. Luckily, Voyo Woo, a Chinese immigrant (移民), is trying to bring the art back to life.

②Ms Woo began to study paper cutting as a 14-year-old girl in her hometown in China. She said all the students at school had to learn paper cutting. But she had a deep love for it. So her teacher spent more time teaching her after class. Later, she won second prize in a national painting and calligraphy (书法) competition. Ms Woo went to America after she finished college in 2008. Soon after that, she took part in an activity to promote Chinese paper cutting. And then she was invited to show the art in many important activities. "It is important to promote the art to Americans or anyone who is interested in it. Maybe it will make the art more popular." Woo said.

③From paper cutting, people can know about Chinese cultural values, history and stories of people's life. Ms Woo uses the art as a tool to show Chinese culture to the people who know little about it. Chinese art is not only for Chinese, but also for people all over the world.

In the open field, a crowd was in front of the board, from which a piece of bad news comes-- France lost the battle to Germany.

That morning, I started for school very late with fear of being punished(惩罚). I hurried as fast as I could to school.

When school began, there was usually a- great noise. But now it was all so silent! I went in and sat down. I found our teacher had put on his beautiful coat that he never wore except on prize days. On the back benches that were always empty, the village people were sitting quietly like us.

While I was wondering, M. Hamel said," My students, the order has come from Germany to teach only German in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. So this is your last French lesson."

How sorry I was for hardly knowing how to write French! Now I understood why the old men of the village were sitting here. They were sorry, too, that they had not gone to school more. It was their way of thanking our teacher for his 40 years of service and of showing their love for the country that was theirs no more.

Then, M. Hamel talked of the French language, saying it was the most beautiful language in the world. He opened the book and read us our lesson. I was amazed to. see how well I understood it. All he said seemed so easy! After it, we were asked to write. Whenever I looked up from my writing, I saw M. Hamel staring first at one thing, then at another, as if he wanted to fi x everything in his mind. On the roof the pigeons(鸽子) cooed very low, and I thought to myself," Will German soldiers even make pigeons sing in German?"

All at once the church- clock struck twelve. It was the time to dismiss(解散) the class.

M. Hamel stood up, very pale. I never saw him look so tall.

" My friends" said he,"I …I…" But something choked(哽咽) him.

Then he returned to the blackboard, took a piece of chalk, with all his strength, he wrote as large as he could:

" Vive La France!(法国万岁)"

—— Adapted from The Last Lesson
