阅读理解

On a rainy day, about 150 volunteers worked for eight hours to clean up Carson creek that is near a river. About nine tons of trash (垃圾) was taken out from there.

"We did a good job," said Alan Specter, the organizer of the event. "We've planned to come back here one more time, three years from now. Of course, we hope that there won't be so much trash next time."

The trash came in all shapes, sizes and colours: bottles, bicycles, batteries, furniture, clothing, plastic bags, dolls and even a golf bag with a full set of golf clubs (高尔夫球杆).

The dirty and tiring work was done by two volunteering groups—Save the Bay and Watch the Whales. Most of the volunteers came from a local police station and a fire station. And some of them were old people who had already got retired.

That day, it rained a little. All of them wore boots and raincoats. The work took place along a two-mile river with over 500 big yellow trash bags everywhere.

No one found anything that cost much. A five-year-old boy found an earring which he thought might be worth a million dollars. He said he'd sell it. Then he'd donate half of the money to Watch the Whales, and use the other half to buy his favourite ice cream every day.

Many people laughed at the boy's story. However, it was easily found that the environment there did become better.

A、They helped some homeless animals. B、They collected a lot of trash. C、They found something expensive. D、They helped a small boy achieve his dream.

A、All of them were old but helpful. B、All of them liked collecting old things. C、All of them hated to live near the river. D、All of them were interested in volunteering.
(3)、What might the underlined word "donate" mean?
A、Look for. B、Pick up. C、Put off. D、Give away.
(4)、Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A、There must be less trash when the volunteers get back again. B、The volunteers would continue to clean the place in the future. C、In fact, the earring which the small boy found cost little. D、A lot of trash was thrown around along the river.
(5)、What is the best title for the passage?
A、Rainy days B、a boy's dream C、Cleaning up Carson Creek D、Something useful by a river

It used to be that people would drink coffee or tea in the morning to pick them up and get them going for the day. Then cola drinks hit the market. With lots of caffeine and sugar, these drinks soon became the pick-me-up of choice for many adults and teenagers. Now drink companies are putting out so-called "energy drinks." These drinks have the specific aim of giving tired customers more energy.

One example of a popular energy drink is Red Bull. The company that puts out this drink has reported that Red Bull is not a thirst quencher (解渴饮料). Instead, the drink is meant to revitalize(使恢复生机) a tired customer's body and mind. In order to do this, the makers of Red Bull, and other energy drinks, typically add vitamins and certain chemicals to their drinks. The added chemicals are like chemicals that the body naturally produces for energy. The vitamins, chemicals, caffeine, and sugar found in these drinks all seem to give a person energy.

Health experts are not so sure, though. For one thing, there is not enough evidence(证据) to show that all of the vitamins added to energy drinks actually raise a person's energy level. Another problem is that there are so many things in the drinks. Nobody knows for sure how all of the ingredients in energy drinks work together.

Dr. Brent Bauer cautions (告诚) people about believing all the claims (申明) energy drinks make. He says, "It may be true if you put these twelve things together, you will get a good result." However Dr. Bauer adds the mix of ingredients could also have a negative impact (负面影响) on the body "We just don't know at this point," he says.

Trisha loves playing with dolls(玩偶). She has {#blank#}1{#/blank#} of clothes for them. And every day she tries to think of new ways to play with them.

One day she thought of getting a {#blank#}2{#/blank#} for her dolls. However, doll houses are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} to buy. She didn't have enough money. And she didn't want to ask her parents for the money. So she decided to make one by {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

She found some cardboard(硬纸板) and a {#blank#}5{#/blank#} of scissors, and set to work. She spent an hour cutting the cardboard into small pieces and using them to build a house with six rooms. It was large enough, but Trisha wasn't satisfied(满意的) with {#blank#}6{#/blank#} it looked like— its color was ugly(难看的).

Trisha then used old wallpaper of beautiful colors to do some improvement. As soon as she{#blank#}7{#/blank#} that, her parents came back. They couldn't wait to help her. Mom made some beds and Dad made some wooden furniture. Then the house looked a lot {#blank#}8{#/blank#} beautiful.

Trisha looked at the house {#blank#}9{#/blank#} a smile. She was tired. It was a long process, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} it was really fun. She finally found something new for her dolls, and she felt it great to make something herself.

Collecting scrapbooking (剪贴簿) is a kind of hobby. It is popular for more than 500 years. Some people call it a friendship book. They keep pictures, letters, poems and other things they want. Today people collect many things in scrapbooks. Some people have funny collections, like pictures of the world's most ugly dogs. Other people may collect stories about the bad weather.

To start your scrapbooking, first, you should decide what to collect. Start with just one idea. Next, you need a book with paper, scissors and glue. Then use the scissors to cut out the pictures or stories. At last use the glue to stick them to the background paper.

Scrapbooking is so popular these days. I think people want to record their family history and show it to other people. When I was a boy, I always saved bits of paper, things like movie tickets and holiday postcards. I made my first scrapbook for my grandfather ten years ago when he died. When I sat at his desk, I found some wonderful things like my grandfather's birthday cards and photos in the past, then I put them in the scrapbook. After that, I made two more scrapbooks for my brother and me with beautiful collections. I want to keep those happy and beautiful memories (记忆). That's the real meaning of scrapbooking.
