牛津版(深圳·广州)初中英语九年级上册Module2 Ideas and viewpoints Unit 3 Family life 第1课时同步训练

阅读理解

Unlike their parents and grandparents, most middle school students in China nowadays don't have brothers or sisters. This is because of our country's family planning policy (计划生育政策), which started in the 1970s.

This is one kind of family planning, but there are many others in different countries. According to a new report, family planning is a human right. It helps women better plan their education and work. It also helps the economy (经济) of developing countries.

The report was released (发布) by the United Nations Population Fund on Nov. 14. It mainly talked about family planning, human rights and development.

The report said that about 867 million women in developing countries now have ways to control (控制) when and if they are to give birth, but there are still 222 million women unable to exercise their right to family planning.

"Women and their children and families live healthier, longer lives because of family planning," said Dr Margaret Greene, the lead author of the report.

举一反三
Is there someone you hate? Well, maybe you don't really hate them. But
you get really angry every time you think of them. If you don't let this anger go, it can turn into bitterness(痛苦)
Bitterness appears when we can't forgive(原谅) someone who has hurt us or made us angry. Someone might say or do something that hurts us. But Instead of controlling the anger, we keep it deep inside. Before long, a bitter feeling begins to grow. We may think we're hurting that person by criticizing him or her often, but we're really only hurting ourselves.
Bitterness can not only lead to serious health problems such as heart disease, but also hurt our relationships with friends and family members. No one enjoys being around an anger person for very long.
If you see bitterness in your life, here are some ways to deal with it.
Accept it
Instead of trying to deny your anger, make it clear to yourself and accept it. See your anger for what it is and quickly deal with it.
Stop making excuses for it
You may feel you have a right to be anger. You may think you're right  and the other person is wrong. You may even secretly enjoy making the other person look bad. But in the end, bitterness hurts you much more than the other person. The bitterness will hold you back, and the other person will go on with his or her life.
Forgive and forget it
You probably can't completely put the anger out of your mind. But you can decide to forgive the other person. Forget it and move on. You'll enjoy better health and peace of mind.

With our already busy lives, finding time to exercise can be impossible. So maybe it would help if there was ‘a best time' to exercise.

There are clear benefits to exercising in the morning. Many of us have more free time than later in the day, and it may be easier for us to keep a morning plan. A study found that people could sleep better when they exercised in the morning or had the physical activity during the whole day. Exercising on an empty stomach(空腹)before breakfast could also have less fat(脂肪)and keep healthier.

So, good news for early birds, but what if you're not a morning person? Working out in the afternoon or evening is also good, but different. For example, your body's ability reaches the highest level in the afternoon, according to a 2010 study. Also, in the afternoon and evening, your mind is the quickest, and your heart rate and blood(血)pressure are lowest, and you aren't getting hurt(受伤)easily when exercising.

But can this happen? Deciding on if you are a man or a woman? Our bodies are different, after all, so the best time to exercise may be different too. Want to reduce(降低)your blood pressure and you are a woman? Exercise in the morning. Want to improve your heart health and you are a man? Evening is better for you. But, a 2022 study found that it's both OK for them to exercise at either time of day.

So what time is best? It seems the answer is: whatever time is best for you!

When it comes to learning a foreign language, most people would choose English. Millions of people born in non-English speaking countries learn it just from textbooks and spend hours studying English grammar. However, these are the wrong ways to learn English. Let's look at some good ways.

English media such as music, videos and TV shows are helpful. I come from a small country in Europe. When I was a little boy, there were few local TV shows or songs in my hometown. So my friends and I almost only watched English TV shows and listened to English songs. This, along with the courses we were taking at school, helped speed up our process of learning English.

Start making conversations in English when you can understand what you hear. While it may seem strange at first, but it would get more natural if you stick to it. I spent a lot of time talking with my friends in English. When we finished primary school we could speak English fluently (流利地).

I learnt three other languages when I was in college. Now I can confidently say that the only way to truly master a language is to live as though the language were your mother tongue (语言). So just forget about your textbooks and try acting like you live outside of China. Find ways to expose (使接触) yourself to English as much as possible. It will not only make you a better learner but also give you a fresh view of the language.

①Recently, a short video series named Escape (逃离) from the British Museum came out on Bilibili and became a big hit in Chinese network. The video tells the story of how a Chinese relic escapes from the British Museum and finds its way back to China. A girl acts the role of an ancient Chinese jade (玉石) teapot. The teapot came alive and tried to find a way home. Later, she happened to meet a reporter on the street. The reporter's black eyes and yellow skin made her feel warm. With the help of this reporter, she finally went back to China. After returning home, the teapot quickly visited local museums and read "letters" written by other relics that are still in the British Museum.

②"My family, I have been lost for a long time," and "One day, I will finally be back." are lines (台词) in those letters. They moved the viewers deeply.

③The series were made by two Chinese young vloggers. They got this idea at the beginning of this year from a suggestion online. It advised creating a cartoon about relics coming to life and returning for Chinese New Year.

④They turned this idea into a video and stayed in the U.K. for three months, looking for information and making it. They said they are so glad that people are caring more about those Chinese cultural relics in the British Museum. That is also what they really want to do—making the young people care more about Chinese culture and history.

⑤In fact, some other countries also share the same calls for the return of their relics. Many African and Asian countries questioned about the rights for the British Museum to hold their relics as well. ____
