In 1959, when Jean Harper was in the third grade, her teacher asked them to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and expressed her dream of becoming an airline pilot. Her paper came back with an "F" on it. The teacher told her it was a "fairy tale". Jean was completely disappointed. As the years went by, Jean was beaten down by the discouragement. "Girls can't become airline pilots; never have, never will. You're crazy." Finally Jean gave up.

In her senior year of high school, her English teacher was Mrs. Dorothy Slaton, a strict teacher with high standards. One day Mrs. Slaton asked this question, "What will you do in the future?" Jean felt a rush of the old enthusiasm (热情), and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream right away.

The next thing that Mrs. Slaton said changed the course of Jean's life. "I have a little secret for you. You do have unlimited (无限的) abilities and talents. When you leave school, if you don't go for your dream, no one will do it for you. You can have what you want if you try!"

The hurt and fear of years of discouragement disappeared suddenly. Jean felt thrilled and told her teacher about her dream of becoming a pilot. Mrs. Slaton slapped (敲) the desk top, "Then do it!" she said.

Studying too much?

Most people work or study from Monday to Friday. The weekend is usually a time of rest. But today's Chinese teenagers can hardly rest during the weekends.

According to a survey, 24% of the Grade 8 students in Beijing have classes at the weekend. Over 40% of the middle school students have less than eight hours' sleep each night because of study.

And this doesn't happen only in Beijing. Ji Chunying is a Grade 9 student in Guangzhou. The 14-year-old girl has to get up at 6:45am on Saturday. Then she has classes all the day. On Sunday, she goes to extra(额外)classes for math and physics. But Ji doesn't complain. She says her classmates all work very hard.

Finding time to have fun

Zhao Ming, 13, is from Zhenjiang, Guangdong. Zhao's weekend is less busy. But he still spends Saturday in school. On Sunday, after finishing homework, he plays basketball. "I feel happy because I still have time to do the things I like. " he said. Some students are much luckier. Ding Yi, a grade 8 student from Laiwu, Shandong, is one of them. During the weekend, Ding usually gets up at 8:00a. m. . Then she spends some time doing homework. After that she is free to go shopping or watch TV. "My teacher says I don't need to push myself too much. " Learning well at school is enough, " Ding said. "I feel pretty lucky. "

For his eleventh birthday, Tom was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children's Activity Centre and said he could choose any course(课程) that interested him. There was just one requirement (要求): Tom would have to promise(承诺) to study it for at least one year.

Tom had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Tom's artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Tom's parents would let him decide.

Tom's eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed (列出) all the courses on offer. He stopped at "Photography". He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Tom's family weren't poor, they weren't rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.

The next course to catch his eye was "Language Art". He didn't even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches(演讲). Tom, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse. Then he saw "cooking", which sounded like something he'd like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient(方便的). It could be done alone and it was also creative.

Based on(基于) Tom's hobby history, his dad had doubts (怀疑), but he agreed. Much to his parents' surprise, he practiced at home and made delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Tom got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.

The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again. Now Tom is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers(顾客) say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.
