We walked all afternoon with Infadoos and Scragga. Their men walked about a hundred metres ahead of us.

    “When did your people, the Kukuana, come to this place?”

    “They came from the north many thousands of moons ago,” Infadoos explained. “When they reached the mountains, they could go no farther. They stayed here where the land is good and there is water.”

    “Do you live here in peace?” I asked.

    “There have been two wars. Once an army came down from the north, but we killed most of them. Soon after that, we fought among ourselves.” He said, “The king at that time had two sons—twins. When he died, both young men wanted to be king. One of the twins, Twala, killed the other and became king.”

    “Did the dead man have a wife and children?” I asked. I knew that if he did, the fighting could start again one day.

    “Yes. He had a wife, Imotu, and a son, Ignosi. They ran away.” He pointed to a village a short way ahead. “That is the village where Imotu and Ignosi first hid,” he said. “We shall stay there tonight.”

    As soon as we were within a mile or so of the village, an army of men came out. As we passed them, they shouted a welcome.

    Their women were in the village. They stopped whatever they were doing to watch us pass by, but they were not rude. As soon as we were comfortable in a hut, they came with milk, honey, and cooked food.

    A young man brought a fat young ox which he killed and cut into pieces. We took a few pieces for ourselves and gave him the rest. We don't want them to think we were selfish.（选自《所罗门王的宝藏》，有删节）

    When I was a kid, I often played basketball. So I was thin but healthy. When l was about 15, I stopped playing basketball. I also started to drink a lot of drinks high in sugar and eat much more than before. Between 15 and 17, I put on a lot of weight-about 50 kg.

    I didn't know how big I was until I saw a photo one day. In the photo, I had a fat neck and my stomach was out there. I hated the way I looked. I knew I needed to lose some weight.

    I started to drink only water, and eat less and healthier. I ate mainly vegetables and only one piece of meat every day, and stayed away from sugar.

    I also started to exercise. Every day, I ran for 30 minutes first, and then I did some push-ups (俯卧撑) for 10 minutes. I also jumped rope for 15 minutes every day.

    I kept exercising the whole winter. When March came, many people said to me, "Oh, Dave, you've been a different person!"

    It was true. I had lost 25 kg in three months. I liked taking photos, and I noticed the difference in my looks.

    I loved the three months. It felt good to lose weight, and it felt even better to set a goal (目标) and go for it.

    Boyan Slat has one huge goal. It's a goal that could be good for people and a {#blank#}1{#/blank#} all over the world. Amazingly, it looks like he's going to m {#blank#}2{#/blank#}his goal.

    When he was 16  Dutch engineering student Slat was on vacation in Greece, and he started to think about all the rubbish that is p{#blank#}3{#/blank#} onto beaches by water. The oceans around the world are all of plastic—millions of tons of plastic. Unfortunately, plastic doesn't just disappear. It takes c{#blank#}4{#/blank#} to break down (分解).

    The p{#blank#}5{#/blank#} situation of the oceans is bad and worrying and Slat wanted to do something to change it. So he made it a personal goal to clean up the rubbish in the world's oceans.

    Slat started with an idea for an unusual m{#blank#}6{#/blank#} to "catch" the plastic floating (漂浮) in the water using the natural energy of the ocean. He left school in 2013 to begin work on his project The Ocean Cleanup. Soon, the project r{#blank#}7{#/blank#} a lot of attention.

    A year later, he was leading a team of 100 scientists and engineers working on the invention. Slat needed money for this, so he started asking people to d{#blank#}8{#/blank#} to his project online and raised over $ 2 million!

    Soon after, Slat was named a "Champion of the Earth" by the United Nations for his meaningful and v{#blank#}9{#/blank#} work. It's the most important title the UN gives to people helping the environment. The Ocean Cleanup also won several awards (奖项) for having one of the best inventions of 2015. But the d{#blank#}10{#/blank#} goes on for Slat. He hopes that the oceans will be free of plastic in about twenty or thirty years.

Who is the greatest teacher in Chinese history? Many people will think of Confucius, whose birthday was September 28. Although he lived over 2,000 years ago, people still remember and respect him for his contribution (贡献) to the education today.

Confucius lived in the Kingdom of Lu, which lies in Shandong Province. He lived during the Spring and Autumn Period. He had a hard childhood. His father died when he was only 3. His mother brought him up. As a child, he had to work to help his mother, but young Confucius didn't give up studying. He visited many famous teachers and learned music, history, poems and sports.

Later, he became a teacher and started the first public school in Chinese history. At that time only children from noble families could go to school, but Confucius believed everyone should go to school if they wanted to learn. He had about 3,000 students in his lifetime.

Today, people still follow Confucius' lessons. He told us that we all have something worthy to be learned. "When I am with three people, one of them must be better than me in some areas. I choose their good qualities and follow them."

He also taught us that thinking is very important in study. "All study but no thinking makes people puzzled (困惑的). All thinking but no study makes people lazy."

Confucius is not only a great teacher, but also a famous thinker with wise thoughts about the world and society. His most important teachings are about kindness and good manners. "A person should be strict with himself, but be kind to others." he said.

I am Lu Xin. I went to Yunnan Province with my parents last summer vacation. We spent a week there. We visited Kunming, Dali and Lijiang. We climbed Kunming Xishan, visited the Stone Forest, went to the Flower Market and went boating on Erhai Lake. We also tasted the delicious food like the crossing bridge noodles. It was really a wonderful trip. And I would never forget it.

I am Ma Yue. Making a trip to Shanghai on May 18 was an experience which I would never forget I arrived in Shanghai at about 2 o'clock, and immediately took a No.5 bus to the sea area. The beautiful blue sea is so large that I couldn't see the other side of it. After getting off the bus, I went straight to the shore. Taking off my shoes, I put my feet into the sea. The sea was cool, and walking in the sea was such a great joy that I didn't want to stop. Then I collected shells. When it got dark, I sat on the shore, watching the sea. The night scene was simply amazing! Finally I had to go back. It was an unforgettable day in my life.

Every year, Australia hosts a 543. 7-mile-long ultra-marathon(超级马拉松) race. 

In 1983, a potato farmer named Cliff Young showed up at the start of the race. People {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(意识到) that he was 61 years old and the race was dangerous for him. Cliff Young might {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(死) of tiredness, so some people tried to stop him. 

However, Cliff Young surprised everyone with an amazing {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(胜利). He not only won the race, but {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(设法完成) to break the race record. 

So how did Cliff Young make it? Well, he {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(继续) running throughout the night while other runners were {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(休息). He really had a very strong {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(意志). 

When Cliff Young was awarded the winning prize of $10, 000, he said he {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(实在；的确) didn't know there was a prize. He gave away his prize money to the rest of the runners after him. 

After the win, Cliff Young {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(参加) many ultra- marathon races to raise money for homeless children. His running style which is still popular {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(在国外) is called " The Cliff Shuffle".
