I didn't go to Santiago,Chile to look for friendship.In fact,Chile was not even on my wish list.

A mid-life crisis woman,I got a chance to study abroad.I only wanted to learn about global business,taste South American  cuisine,and  check"study  abroad"off my  wish  list.

On the fifth day,I joined a group for a neighborhood work project aided by the anti-poverty(扶贫)organization. Our tasks were to build a water tower and paint the community center.Upon arrival,I couldn't believe my eyes.It was like a scene out of a horrible film.That moment redefined poverty for me because I had never seen such terrible living conditions.As advised,I showed no signs of the emotional battle going on inside me.

Just as I was about to start work on painting,a request came through for a few volunteers to help Nadia,a local resident who volunteered to cook for us.I raised my hand to help because I wanted to spend time with the people of the neighborhood despite my shortage of Spanish speaking skills.  Nadia had a sincere smile but not overly friendly.Even without speaking each other's language,we started to learn about one another.We chatted about our children,our upbringing,shared pictures of our family,struggled to instruct each other to communicate in the other's language,and laughed many times.

After we fed everybody and the dishes were washed,my day was over.But I found myself hesitant to leave.It was as if I had known her my entire life.I had not predicted the unselfishness of heart I would encounter,and it was moving.

As we were waiting for the car to pick us up,Nadia showed me her plants that are well-maintained.I could see that despite the hard conditions she was passionate about life.She made me long to be a stronger person.She showed me that poverty was external,but happiness was internal.I was seeking to give 100 percent for a well-intentioned cause,but I left receiving 200 percent from her.

In February of 2005, Phil Belfiore was teaching one of Robert Frost's poems Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening. He liked it so much that he 1 it on his home answering machine, which would lead to one of the most 2 friendships of his life. 

When Phil returned from his vacation, he listened to his voice

3 . One gentleman caller 4 for dialing the wrong number. But, he added, he'd really enjoyed the poem. Phil thought nothing more of it—until the phone rang a few days later.

6 , but he was calling to hear the poem again. The two men talked. It turned out that he had 7 to phone his brother, but dialed the wrong number. Before hanging up, Phil told John to 8 anytime, whether to hear the poem or just to have a chat. 

That was 11 years ago. They've spoken on the phone a few times a month ever since. It is John who is still the starter of most calls. However, Phil will ring if a long while has passed. Not 9 , John has been in poor health. His special voice is just the 10 of some heart trouble. They seem to always 11 when there's been a big sports event. The men like to discuss football most. John will also 12 Phil on his life. Slowly, their conversations have grown much more 13 . They planned to meet twice, but circumstances went against them. Their friendship is based on the 14 act of picking up the phone. "My best friend is someone I've not yet met 15 ," says John.

When I was about twelve, I headed to a restaurant for dinner with my family. It was winter, and on that night the wind was really blowing hard. 

As my mum and I headed to the restaurant from our car, a girl about my age and her mother came up to us. They asked if we had any spare change(零钱). My mum right away asked where they lived. They pointed to an old car in a parking lot across the street. The girl said there were six of them living in that car. 

My mum said she had something to do after handing the people a few dollars. She sent me inside the restaurant with my dad and my three siblings(兄弟姐妹). But she didn't come. Later, I found out she had gone home and put all the food in our cupboards into a few bags. Then, she brought that food over to the car and handed the bags to the family. I wasn't there when that happened, but I can only imagine the joy it brought to those people. A few days later, when I actually found out about what she had done, I asked her why she helped those people. She told me that they were not lucky. I remembered the face of that girl who had asked us for change. She was the same age as me, yet we looked so different. 

Here I stood, dressed in almost new clothes, headed to eat in a restaurant and then went back home to the bedroom I shared with my younger sister. I remembered thinking the other girl didn't have any food to eat and that she was heading back to a cold car shared with five other people. 

After painting this picture in my mind, I understood why my mum had done what she did. I will never forget what she did that night, and how she taught me one of the best lessons I have ever learned. 

Sullivan calls her right arm her "little arm". The 10-year-old was born with that arm less than half the 1 size. She has no elbow and tiny fingers to 2 things. However, it never discouraged her. This 3 kid could always find a way to make that little arm 4 for her. Until recently, riding a bike has proved out of her reach. But that might soon change 5 some college students.

Sullivan's grandparents saw a local news about Siena College students making a prosthetic (假肢的) hand for a little girl using the school's 3D printer. They went to see if her granddaughter could be a 6 for a new arm like that girl. However, there was a 7 when the grandparents asked if the college group could help Sullivan, as the design was for limbs (肢体) 8 an elbow or wrist.

Fortunately, Kristin, a junior engineering major said yes. She and her team couldn't 9 a perfect solution, but they promised to try. They met Sullivan from time to time to measure and test the design, 10 the initial plans to fit Sullivan's little arm. They've worked for almost a year to build Sullivan a solution. The task has been one of 11 and creativity,12 by kindness. "Sometimes you get 13 , but she is so excited," Kristin said. "Her motivation and her strength, 14 our team along."

On May 4, Sullivan received her arm. She also received a(n) 15 surprise: a new bike. 

Faye and Matthew Gooding and their five young sons appear to have perfect lives. Mrs. Gooding 1 beautiful photos of life in their four-bedroom house on Instagram(一种社交软件), and more than 32, 000 people 2 them. For the couple themselves, 3 , this "materially(物质地) perfect world" was lacking something—so now they are giving up all their 4 to travel around the world with their kids.

This was the last Christmas that the couple spent in their house, which has already been sold. Most of their belongings are 5 too. Shortly their Ford car will be sold and the family will take just one backpack each.

Mrs. Gooding said: "Some friends and family think Matt and I are 6 to be giving up so much. It's been difficult giving up so many possessions. Yet 7 enjoying spending time with the boys, I found myself cleaning the house all day before. The older ones were at school and I thought, 'I 8 see them'. I admitted how I felt to Matt. He agreed it felt as if our lives moved around 9 things—both of us working to 10 the mortgage(贷款) and keep ourselves in our materially perfect world."

    They will leave this month and plan to start their 11 in Sweden where they have friends.

Mr. Gooding added: "People have said 'aren't you worried about stability and safety?'— 12 as we have five small children. It is a (an) 13 because we are giving up so much. But we can't wait to spend more time with our sons without the 14 of everyday routines. We don't know what will happen, but we do know if we didn't do this we would always 15 it."

"A decade-long moratorium (中止) on fishing was imposed on the country's longest river in 2021 {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the aim of restoring its ecological health. After three years, the fish population in the river has recovered obviously, but the moratorium still faces constant threats from illegal fishing,"Tang Renjian, minister of agriculture and rural affairs, said at a news conference.

In {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (respond) to that, Tang said, "Authorities will step up nighttime surveillance (监视) as well as patrols near river sections close to provincial borders. Relying on automatic and {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (intelligence) monitoring methods, we are strengthening round-the-clock monitoring and supervision of critical water areas."

Ma Youxiang, a vice-minister of agriculture and rural affairs, told the news conference, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} it has increased by a quarter since 2021, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} total fish population in the Yangtze is only {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (slight) more than a third of the preindustrial (工业化前的) level. To restore fish populations is a long task. Tang described the ban as a long-term, complex and hard historical task closely {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (link) to the Chinese nation's sustainable development.

"{#blank#}8{#/blank#} you may see, the current state of the Yangtze can {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (regard) as being in the early stages of recovery from a serious illness after decades of overfishing and pollution," Tang said.

Ministry of Public Security data show it has solved more than 20,000 cases {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (involve) violations of the ban since 2021. Over that period, illegal fishing in the main waterways of the Yangtze has decreased by almost a third, and less than 10 percent involves more destructive organized crimes.
