①Many people describe New York City as the centre of culture in the United States. That's because no matter what you're interested in, you'll find it in New York City. Whether it's theatre, music, ballet, or museums, the city has some of the very best to offer.

②The street called Broadway in New York City became the centre of American theatre in the mid-19th century. The number, size, and fame(名声) of the Broadway theatres grew as New York City grew. In 1910 the brightly lighted street became known as "the Great White Way". Beyond these theatres the city offers free performances of the plays of William Shakespeare in Central Park. Operas and concerts are also held in the park.

③New York City has a number of world-class space for performances of all kinds. The city's concert halls include those at the Lincoln Centre for the Performing Arts as well as Carnegie Hall and Radio City Music Hall. The groups that perform in these halls include the Metropolitan Opera, the New York City Opera, and the New York Philharmonic. The New York City Ballet also performs at the Lincoln Centre, in the New York State Theatre.

④Museums are another important part of New York City's cultural life. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, and the Guggenheim Museum are among the city's art museums. You can also spend many hours in the American Museum of Natural History and its Rose Centre for Earth and Space Science.

⑤With all of these resources(资源) there is always plenty to do in New York City.

A slow train in Southwest China with its own study room has drawn much attention. The train No. 5609/5610 runs between Chongqing and Xiushan county.

It is a public-welfare (公益的) "slow train". In some carriages (车厢), some desks and chairs next to the windows take the place of seats in order to turn the carriage into a "study carriage" for passengers in need.

The train No. 5609/5610 is not the only one of this kind. Other "slow trains" have become "study carriages", too, including No. 5619/5620 and 5633/5634. They run along the Chengdu-Kunming Railway. Students from nearby schools often take the trains between school and home. The trains are their "school buses" and they often use their travel time to finish homework. Many passengers also use their travel time to complete work.

On the train No. Z150, running between Guiyang and Beijing, a "book bar" carriage has been popular with college students. There are nearly 400 universities and colleges in the cities along the line, making the train the top choice for most students from those schools. Since 2015, the train's dining car has been open for free at night. It provides students with a lending library, free tea and other services. It's a relaxing place for the students to continue their studies.

When I first started using Chinese websites I was a bit confused(疑惑的) by their design. Popular sites like Taobao and Jingdong are very "busy"—they are covered with dozens of links and flashing banners( 横幅广告). They often include a wide variety of bright colors as well, contrasting(形成对比) with the simple colors of most Western websites.

Why are Chinese sites designed this way? Some say that Chinese web design hasn't caught up with the standards of Western web design practices. But I don't think this quite explains_it. Some Chinese sites such as Baidu, are quite clean-looking. You may find the real reasons in the following.

A more convincing(令人信服的) theory has to do with the Chinese language. There are no capital letters or spaces in Chinese writing--foreigners who are used to seeing these things might think that Chinese text looks very crowded.

Another thing that makes Chinese websites look so busy is the large number of links. Some sites might have hundreds of links on their front page.

In addition, there is also a language-related explanation to the phenomenon(现象). It is difficult to type Chinese characters on a Roman alphabet-based keyboard. You have to type out each character using pinyin, which can be inconvenient. So it's easier to just click the link you want instead of typing what you're looking for. Or perhaps it could just be that sometimes people prefer flashy, busy websites. Browsing(浏览) Jingdong is like stepping into a noisy, brightly-lit street market. In this way, Chinese Internet users might feel right at home when using these sites.

Could you spend 24 bours without the Internet? I'm not sure how I'd deal with it. These days we all depend heavily on technology, you may or may not be surprised by the results of some recent research about the effects of online and digital （数字的） technology on people's lives. More than half of the people who were questioned said they'd feel "upset" without an Internet connection even for a brief period of time, which is, about 15-30 minutes when they were away from the Internet. 

The scientists also challenged people to spend one whole day without using technology and then report back on what it was like. Some people were surprised that they could not even turn their phones to silent. Nearly fifty percent of them said they felt lonely when they weren't using social media. According to the research, it is harder for the younger people to give up technology. They said that the modern technology has already become a part of their lives. However, there are about 25% of people actually said they felt freer without an Internet connection. It meant they found time to do something they wouldn't usually do such as reading a novel. Some of them said they enjoyed spending more time talking to family and friends face to face. 

So, what about you? As a middle school student, could you take the Internet challenge and spend 24 hours without going online? Or would it be a bad dream for you? Here we have different opinions from Chinese students aged from 12-16, maybe they'll be able to help you with your Internet use.
