Animals UK News        Daily News               16th March  2020

Wild beavers (河狸) are back! Experts say that the wild beaver families are doing well. The beavers are even boosting wildlife and the environment!

Over ten years ago, a family of beavers turned up in a part of the river Otter, in Devon. No one knew exactly where they came from. It was a big surprise -wild beavers hadn't lived in England for around 400 years!

In 2015, the govemment allowed the beavers to stay there as part of a trial (试验). They wanted to see if these animals could be reintroduced to the wild. The trial ends in February. Some scientists from the University of Exeter already say the beavers help the wildlife in the area. One scientist called it “an amazing story”.

A lot of this is because of dams. Beavers build dams along the river. This creates deep pools in the riverbed and slows the water down. Scientists say this is perfect for many different types of plants and animals! Many plants are growing near the beavers. Different types of animals are also becoming more and more in the river. Beavers also help make flooding less, scientists say. The beavers' dams slow down the speed of the river, especially after heavy rain.

There are, however, some problems. Beavers gnaw (咬,啃) on trees and this can harm them. Their dams can also sometimes create floods (洪水) on people's land.

Beavers aren't the only animals that are being reintroduced to the wild! In 2019, red squirrels were brought back to an area of the Scottish Highlands. Further away, the world's rarest (罕见的) duck, the Madagascar pochard, is making a comeback. It was set free into the wild on the African island in 2019 and is doing well.

Who knows what other animals might be making a comeback?

Sarah and her best friend, Alex, loved exploring the forest near their neighborhood. One day, while they were exploring through the woods, Sarah stepped upon a shiny rock hidden under a pile of leaves. Excitedly, she said to Alex, "Look at what I found! It looks like a valuable diamond. Promise not to tell anyone! It's just a secret between you and me." Alex nodded, agreeing to keep it a secret.

Later that afternoon, Sarah and Alex met their friend, Emily, in the neighborhood. Unable to control her excitement, Alex told Emily about the treasure Sarah had found. Emily was very curious(好奇的)and wanted to see it, but Sarah quickly stopped them, reminding Alex of their promise. However, Emily's younger brother, Jack, happened to hear their conversation and spread the news to everyone in the neighborhood.

Soon, Sarah's neighbors began to visit her house, hoping to have a look at the mysterious treasure. They knocked on Sarah's door one by one, each asking if they could see it. Sarah and Alex were taken aback by all the attention and didn't know how to deal with the situation.

As the neighbors crowded around, Sarah's mom came out to see what was happening. She gently told the neighbors that the rock they wanted to see was not as special as they thought. It was just a common quartz(石英)Sarah had found in the forest. The neighbors were understanding and soon left with smiles on their faces.

Sarah and Alex learned that some secrets should only be kept between close friends. Sharing secrets with everyone can lead to misunderstandings and unwanted attention. They also realized the importance of trust and honesty in friendship, promising to keep each other's secrets safe in the future.

 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中选出最佳选项。

If I had a cold, I wouldn't think twice about telling my friends or my doctor. For some reason, however, if I had a mental(心理的)problem, I might not treat it in the same way.

At my elementary school, mental health was not discussed even once as far as I can remember. This makes me wonder how many other schools are failing to educate their students on this topic. It makes me sad that children growing up with mental illness may feel like it is something to be ashamed of(对……感到羞耻的)because it is never discussed. When I reached high school, mental health was still seldom discussed. But when it was in the topic of health or biology class, I was given a broad idea that mental illness was a "thing" that really lies.

In my opinion, overstressed high school students could benefit(获益)greatly from more deep discussions about how to deal with mental health problems, such as how to know when you should care about yourself or a friend, or who to reach out for help. I know my friends and I could have benefited. Even if you personally have never faced mental health problems, someone you know is sure to have, and you can offer timely help.

I also believe we need to normalize discussions about mental health at an early age, instead of hiding them from sight. At school, I saw a student's report on mental health education and how it can be carried out in the American school system. The student used the film Inside Out to explain feelings to younger kids. This report made me believe that it, is possible to start these discussions at a young age if we try.

Although we can't change the way people think about mental health over one night, there are still things we can do. Asking our friends how they're feeling is a good start.

 请阅读短文,从每小题所给的四个选项中选出能回答所提问题或完成所给句子的最佳答案。
