John Smith is an exchange student from New York. Here is a letter to his friend in his hometown.

Dear David,

How time flies! It's been 3 months since I came to China. I'm having a great time on my student exchange program here. So far, I've completely got used to the life here and have known a lot about traditional Chinese culture. I'd like to share some with you.

In China, there are many different kinds of traditional art forms, such as paper cutting, Chinese clay art and so on. Among them, the kite interests me most. The first ancient Chinese kite appeared more than 2,000 years ago. Then flying kites was spread into Japan, Korea and Malaysia during the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty. Kites are regarded as the earliest craft (飞行器). They played an important role in the process of inventing the plane.

Tea culture is important in China. Tea was discovered as a kind of drink by accident about 5,000 years ago. It is believed that tea was brought to Korea and Japan during the 6th and 7th centuries. It didn't appear in England until around 1660. The tea trade from China to Western countries took place in the 19th century. Now tea has become one of the most popular drinks around the world.

Lastly, I'd like to tell you something about one of the traditional Chinese festivals — the Mid-Autumn Festival. It is on the fifteenth day of the eighth month in the Chinese lunar calendar (阴历). Chinese people have been celebrating the Mid-Autumn Festival and enjoying mooncakes for centuries.

If you'd like to know more about traditional Chinese culture, I will talk about it in the next letter.

    Best wishes!

yours,

John

If you want to be a better reader, what should you know about the speed of reading?

Some people read very quickly and others read very slowly. But which one is better?

The quick reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down to read instructions (说明书) carefully. The slow reader may be a good reader. But he may spend too much time reading a story for fun. So the reader who reads everything quickly or the one who reads everything slowly isn't really a good reader.

Knowing why you are reading or what you are reading can help you to know whether (是否) you need to read quickly or slowly. Some things should be read slowly. You must read these things slowly all the time to understand and remember everything important. Example are instructions for making or doing something. Also, math books, science and even some storybooks are full of important information(信息). However, some things should be read quickly. Examples are picture-books for fun, letters from friends, and some quick news from newspapers.

In some of your reading, you must change(改变) your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast. You will need to read some pages quickly and then slow down and do more carefully reading when you come to important ideas. So, knowing when to change your reading speed is one important symbol of being a good reader.

 请阅读下面的文章,根据所提供的信息,完成下面的信息卡,把答案写在答题卡指定的位置上。

Sometimes it can be very difficult to predict(预测) the result of your exams, whether you are in a secondary school or even a university. This is probably because exams are one of the most anxious things in education for students. Whether a student is confident in their abilities or not,exams can be often both predictable(可预测的) and unpredictable. If the worst does happen, failing the exams can be one of the most disappointed experiences for students, especially when they were not expecting to fail their exams.

One way to deal with exam failure is to talk to people. Talk to your family, talk to your friends, discuss with them what you can do to get good grades. One thing you must remember is that failing your exams is not the end of the world. Exam failure is one of the many difficulties you'll have to overcome(克服) in your life, and there are always possibilities to learn from failure. After all, I' m sure most of you have heard of a famous saying, "Failure makes you stronger". Actually, it is really true. It gives you an understanding of what it means to fail, to lose, to receive a negative result that you may not have expected to get. In addition, from failure, you can learn why you fail. Then, next time, you can avoid this mistake, and can get better grades.
