When I was in school, I volunteered to work in a hospital for some time.

On one visit, I carefully entered a dark room to find an elderly man {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (lie) in bed. I firstly thought he was sleeping. When I moved {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (close), however, I realized he was very much awake. He wanted to communicate something; but I couldn't make sense of what he {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (say). 0He seemed quite weak, and I couldn't tell if he was in pain, or just frightened. I knew nothing about him, and I felt totally helpless. He clearly didn't want me {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (leave) him, but I felt so lost and uncomfortable that I had to leave the room after only a couple of {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (minute).

The next time I was at {#blank#}6{#/blank#} hospital and saw him again, I was certain he didn't remember me. But he {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (immediate) said, "I remember you. , You gave me hope in my darkest hour that evening!" I was so {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(amaze) that I didn't know how to answer.

In the short moment of my staying there, I did nothing at all. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} surprisingly he found in me something he needed, just because I was there.

I have thought about this thing often over the past years. {#blank#}10{#/blank#} makes me want to offer whatever kindness I can to others, and I try to make it out and appreciate (赞赏) it.

Jackson was driving back home along a road one evening. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It was winter and it was very cold, just like his feelings.

An old lady with her car was standing on one side of the road. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. The lady looked scared even when he put a smile on his face. Was he going to hurt her? He didn't look like a good man and he looked poor and hungry.

Jackson knew how she felt. He said, "{#blank#}3{#/blank#}Why don't you wait in my car? By the way, my name is Jackson."

The lady thought for a while and then went into his car. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Jackson went under her car to repair it. When he finished, he got dirty and his hands hurt. Then the lady told him that her name was Annie. She asked Jackson how much she should pay for his help.

Jackson never thought about getting money. This was not a job for him. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} He told her that if she really wanted to pay him back, the next time she saw someone in need, she should give that person.

In order to know a foreign language thoroughly（彻底地）, four things are necessary. Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it. Secondly, we must be able to speak it by ourselves correctly, with confidence and without hesitation（犹豫）. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language. Fourthly, we must be able to make up sentences that are grammatically correct. We must know how to put sentences into paragraphs in order to write a good letter or article. 

There is no easy way to succeed in learning a foreign language. A good memory（记忆力）is of much help, but it is not enough to simply remember rules from a grammar book. It is no much use learning long words and their meanings by heart. 

We must learn not only words but also the use of them in sentences. We must learn by using the language. "Learn through using" is a good piece of advice for people to study a new language. Practice is very important. We must practice speaking and writing the language whenever we can. 

This is an old story. One day, a man was not happy when his 7- year- old daughter made a box with some paper. The family didn't have much money. So the father thought his daughter wasted the paper. The next day, the little girl gave the box to her father and said," Dad, today is your birthday. This box is for you."

The man was happy. But he was upset when he found there was nothing in the box." Why didn't you put anything for me in the box?" He asked his daughter. The little girl looked at him and cried," Dad, I put my love in the box. It's all for you!"

The man felt moved and said sorry to his daughter. Sometimes, we can't see love with our eyes.

On a recent Saturday morning, an excited crowd gathered together on San Francisco's waterfront.  They were watching in amazement as bubble (气泡) artist Kurth Reis slowly drew a large bubble from his bucket (桶) and released it into the air.  Several minutes later, the bubble suddenly popped.  A little girl in the crowd jumped and clapped.  She turned to Reis, eager for another show.  The "bubble man" had succeeded once again in bringing a little bit of joy to others.  

The 49-year-old traveled a rocky path to his new "job".  In 2018, Reis, then a deliveryman, had a serious motorcycle accident.  The man had several operations.  Each time he woke up after an operation, he felt like he had been "reborn".  Following 88 days in the hospital, he felt ready to start a new life.  In 2020, COVID-19 fled his city with sorrow.  Reis thought about what he could do to help make people feel happy again.  He turned to soap and learned to make large bubbles.  

Last year, Reis began performing his art form in parks across San Francisco.  People started to call him the "bubble man".  Some of them give him tips, but the man says he doesn't care about the money.  Reis feels that his art is useful in more important ways.  Not long ago, a woman spoke to him after watching one of his performances.  She told him that she had been very sad ever since her father's death.  Seeing his "joyful" bubbles, however, made her feel much better.  

 "I can't save the world.  I'm not trying to," Reis says.  "But by making some bubbles, I can put a smile on somebody's face. "
