One afternoon, Kate and her brother, Bob, went out to play. Kate was eight, and Bob was ten. "Let's go to the bridge and we can see fish in the river." said Kate.

    "I don't know…" Bob said." Mum told us, "Don't go on the bridge." She said it's dangerous.

    Kate said," I am not afraid. Are you?"

    They walked onto the bridge and began looking for fish in the river. The bridge was a train bridge. Trains went over the bridge three times a day.

    The children were standing in the middle of the bridge when they heard a loud noise. "A train is coming!" Bob shouted. "Run!" He ran to the end of the bridge. He was safe.

    Kate ran, too, but she fell. The train was coming fast. Kate ran towards Bob. She fell again right on the train tracks（铁轨）. There was no time to leave. She had to lie down between the tracks. A few seconds later, the train went over the girl, but she was not hurt at all. She stood up and said to Bob, "Don't tell Mum! Don't tell Mum!"

    At last their mother found out the story. She was angry because they went on the bridge. But she was happy that Kate was all right.

    Mike lived in a small village near New York two years ago. He had a big brown dog. He liked the dog very much because once it saved a boy.

    One day, his dog stood next to an old well(井)." It stayed there for about half an hour," Bow-wow-wow," barked the dog. It barked and barked. Mike heard it and ran over to the well." Why do you stay here, my dear?" Mike asked. "And why are you barking?" The dog looked at him and looked at the well. "Bow-wow- wow ,”he barked even louder. Mike asked his friend Jim for help." Come here, Jim," he said." The dog wants to tell us something.”

    They looked down in to the well .They saw a. boy there. The boy couldn't speak. He was too scared(惊恐)。Mike went to get a rope( 绳)at once. He climbed down to save the boy with the help of the rope. The dog was really clever.

Hi, Kwame. Congratulations on winning the award for Best Animation at the African Movie Awards! Can you tell us a bit about The Legend of Ngong Hills?

Yes. The film is based on a Maasai traditional folktale. The Legend of Ngong Hills is the creation story of a scenic mountain range on the outskirts of present- day Nairobi. The story is centered around the frightful ogre of the forest, who has a habit of attacking the nearby Maasai village. As the story goes, he falls in love with, and eventually gets trapped by a beautiful village girl.

When did you first become interested in African folktales?

As a child. I remember being told many stories by African storytellers, reading picture books, and watching films. I was especially taken with the famous West African character Anansi the Spider. Anansi is a fictional character who, in some stories, is human and can change into a spider or vice- versa. He's always described as a naughty character who pits his wits (斗智斗勇) against superior strength, usually with success. In many different versions of these tales, Anansi weaves his way in and out of trouble and teaches the audience life lessons. This really captured my imagination. From there, I became very interested in African and African Diaspora stories. These folktales tend to lend themselves perfectly to the medium of animation as they often have elements of fantasy like talking animals and magical powers.

 Why do you think it is important to retell these folktales?

Folktales usually shed light on a moral dilemma in the form of metaphor. I think African folktales stand out because they blend creation stories with a moral lesson. I find that African tales use different degrees of humor to help these lessons be received more easily. As times are changing in Africa diaspora, the traditional culture of the elders telling stories to the youth is disappearing. I feel it is important to preserve and improve these stories and culture through this media of film and animation.

I look forward to creating a feature length African period or fantasy piece. The history of Africa is so rich and intricate yet very, very little is known of it, and film is such a powerful way to tell these stories.

A strong wind blew as I walked to Mrs. Goodman's house. Her knee was badly hurt months ago and Mom told her that I would do her yard(院子) work1 she was able to again.

I knocked on 2 door and waited for long. The door3 opened. "Hi, Rodney," Mrs. Goodman said. "Sorry it took me so long to answer the door! Today, I need you to clean out my flowerbeds and rake(耙) the leaves. Do you have any4 ?"

"Mrs. Goodman, could you tell me how to clean out a flowerbed? I know how to rake leaves,5 I'm not sure how to do it by myself." I blushed and said, "I'm sorry I have so many questions!" Mrs. Goodman 6 looked at me as she said, "Rodney, you don' t have to be 7 for asking questions." She told me8 to complete the work, and soon I was ready to get started.

 First I cleaned out the flowerbeds, and then I started raking the leaves. While working,  I thought about a math problem I was having at school. I9 Mrs. Goodman was a math teacher before. However,I was still10 to ask her for math help.

A 11 later, Mrs. Goodman opened the door and called, "Would you like to come inside and warm up?" Inside, she handed me a cup of hot chocolate. "You have done a great job, Rodney. It was12 for me to admit(承认) that I needed help with my yard. work. Have you ever had a hard time13 help?" she said.

 Now I knew that I didn't have to keep my problem 14 . "I sure have, Mrs. Goodman," I answered, "can you help me with my math problem?"
