The Winning Team

Peter had the worst day of his life. As he walked home alone, he felt like there was a heavy weight on his shoulders. He couldn't stop thinking about what happened on the school soccer field. How could he have missed scoring that goal? ①这让他很生气。His team had lost the game because of his mistakes. He let his whole team down. He was worried that his coach might kick him off the team. 

Peter went home without saying a word, but his feelings were written on his face. 

After his father knew what had happened, he told him not to be too hard on himself. After all. winning or losing is only half of the game. The other half is learning how to communicate with others and learning from mistakes. Besides, soccer is about team effort, so teammates should support each other. 

The next day, Peter said sorry to his teammates and asked them to pull together. To his surprise, they all nodded in agreement. "Yeah. "they said. "Don't worry about it. It's never just one person's

fault. ②We should think about how we can do better next time. "Peter felt lucky to be on a winning team. 

When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs(细枝) from school to plant. None of them looked very strong and lively. But with hope for the future, I planted them somewhere in our backyard which could give them enough sunlight. Over the years, because of the poor soil(土壤), three of them died. Only one lived at last.

It grew crooked(不直的) and very slowly. In fact, it looked more like a fat bush than a tree. Later, I noticed that it was starting to die. The branches(树枝) were becoming bare. Only the top third of the tree was still green. I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer, but it didn't work.

Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was thinking if it would be better to just cut it down. It would make the yard look cleaner. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the leaves. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the topmost branches. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.

This tree let me know that all of our lives have a purpose. It doesn't matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

My sisters and I recently returned from visiting our beloved parents in Florida. For six days, we spent about six hours on the beach 1 . We really 2 ourselves there.

I usually read books on the beach while my mom and sisters enjoyed 3 shells(贝壳). This time they 4 their pockets and bags with seashells, and then took them home. On the last day of our trip,I joined the family 5 of collecting shells too. I grabbed handfuls of(一把) sand and picked out shell treasures. Having 6 so many shell handicrafts(手工艺品) made by my mom and sisters before, I used to take shells for granted(理所当然). But I couldn't help but feel 7 at the shells in Florida. Some were big and in different 8 while some were no bigger than a nail, which was unbelievable.

 Many people know there's a beach full of 9 in Western Australia, which is over 74 miles long! It's called Shell Beach. But nobody exactly knows 10 seashell species(品种) there are on the beach:11 as many as 200,000 different kinds. However, very few of the shells have pearls(珍珠) in them. 12 The Science Network,"A finished pearl takes 15 to 20 years to make, which 13 why a ton of shells might produce as few as three pearls. The probabilities(概率) of them being 14 pearls are, exactly, one in a million."

I was lost in thought. The chances of finding a pearl in a shell are more than one in a million. Compared with shells,15 isn't so hard. The shells with pearls are valued by people and so is the person who gets to the top. So try to be a pearl on the beach!

 Thomas was diagnosed(诊断) a serious illness. He was so sad and hoped that he refused any medical treatment. You didn't want to be a burden(负担) of his family.

 One day he {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(run) away from the hospital and hung out on the street. He was wondering{#blank#}2{#/blank#} he could do to face the hard situation. Unexpectedly, a piece of beautiful music came to {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (he) notice. An old blind man was playing {#blank#}4{#/blank#} guitar happily with a few passers-by around him. He was surprised to find there was also a mirror hangung from the blind {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(man) arm. After he finished playing, Thomas came over and asked him, "Excuse me, sir! Is this your mirror?"

"Yes, my guitar and mirror are two things I value most! Music is the {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(funny) of all things in the world." the blind mar answered. "But you can't see anything. What does this mirror mean to you?" Thomas couldn't wait {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(ask). The blind man smiled, "The mirror is a hope for me. I wish I can see my face one day."

 Thomas {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(touch) by what the blind man said. "A blind man could even love life so much, {#blank#}9{#/blank#} I..." Suddenly, he got a complete understanding and {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(quIet) returned to the hospital. From then on, Thomas realized that sunny mind mattered most in daily life

A man wanted to sell his donkey（驴）in a market. The market was  1  from his house, so he  2  early in the morning with his son. 

On the way, the man was sitting on the donkey while his son was walking near it. 3  saw them. He said the father didn't love his son. The man heard this. He got  4  from the donkey and made his son sit on it. 

5  person met them. He said it was not right for the son to make his old father walk in the sun. It was so hot. Now  6  of them decided to walk. 

After 7  , a group of people saw them. They said the father and the son were stupid. They had a donkey, but they didn't sit on it. Now both of them had to sit on the donkey and then  8 going. 

There came a woman. "You may kill the little donkey by  9  that!" she shouted. So what should they do?

10  we should just do what we think is right, because we cannot follow everyone's advice （建议）. 

For most people, graduation(毕业) is an exciting day. But my graduation day was not.

I remember that weekend two years ago. Family and friends had1 from across the country to watch our class walk across that stage. We had degrees, but very few job chances because of the 2 economy (经济). I knew that the next day I  3 school, I would no longer have a place to call home.

I knew my small university town couldn't offer me any opportunities, so I drove to southern California to find 4 . I thought it would take a week to find one, but it 5 for two weeks, and then four weeks, and I found myself in the 6 spot(点) I was in before. 

You know that feeling when you wake up and you are full of fear? Fear about something you can't 7 . You hope that everything that has happened to you so far is just a bad 8 . 

So what did I do to stay 9 ? I wrote. Something about putting words on a page made everything seem a little clearer — a little brighter. Something about writing gave me 10 . If you want something enough, sometimes a little hope is all you need!

I turned my 11  feelings into a children's book—about a surprising hero who simply refused to 12 on his dream.

Then one day, without a writing degree or experience in the writing world, 13 a lot of hard work —I was offered a publishing (出版) deal for my first book! After that, things started to get 14 . I was 15 a second book deal. Then, a few months later, I got an interview with a big company and got a good job. 

It takes time, but just hold on — change can happen when you least expect it.
