From the world's heaviest apple, the oldest lady to the world's smallest dog, these are all parts of a group of the world's strangest people and things. And they are all in the Guinness Book of Records(《吉尼斯记录》).

The book is going to celebrate its birthday this August. It began exactly half a century ago. And it's always one of the bestselling books in the world.

People now can break over 1000 records every week! Why do so many people want to break the records? Do they want their names in the book or meet more people around the world? "It gives people a chance to show they're the best in the world." said one of the record keepers Stewart Newport.

The book was started by Hugh Beaver from Britain. In 1951, he went shooting birds and talked with his friends about the fastest bird in Europe. Three years later, they were still talking about it. So Beaver believed that people must have different ideas. So, he decided to start a book to record the world's truly greatest people and things in it!

The newest book came outlast Tuesday. This book has a lot of interesting records. Here are two:

☆ A British dog, Whitney, is the world's smallest dog. It's only 76mm tall.

☆ An American woman Lee Redmond has the longest fingernails(指甲).They grew as long as 600 mm! She made the record in 1971.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D项中选出答案

Last night one of my Chinese friends took me to a concert of Chinese folk music. The piece which was played on the erhu especially moved me. The music was strangely beautiful ,but under the beauty I sensed a strong sadness and pain. The piece had a simple name,Erquan Yingyue (Moon Reflected on Second Spring),and I began to understand the sadness in the music.

The music was written by Abing,a folk musician who was born in the city of Wuxi in 1893. His mother died when he was very young. Abing's father taught him to play many musical instruments,such as the drums,and in the year of 1910,Abing was known for his musical ability. However,Abing's life grew worse. He was very poor. Not only that,he developed a serious illness and became blind. For several years,he continued to sing and play on the streets. He performed in this way for many years.

Abing's amazing musical skills made him very popular during his lifetime. By the end of his life,he could play over 600 pieces of music. Many of these were written by Abing himself. It is a pity that only six pieces of music in total were recorded for the future world to hear,but his popularity continues to this day. Today(伤口) from their own sad or painful experiences.

 阅读下列短文, 从下面每题的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳答案。

The caique(地中海轻巧小舟) is an important part of Greek culture. For centuries, these traditional wooden boats have been used for fishing and for sending goods, animals and people. But the art of building caiques completely by hand is now in danger.

Caiques from the Greek island of Samos are famous for their quality. Years ago, many locals made a living building caiques. Now, only four boat builders remain. Giorgos Kiassos is one of them. "Sadly, I see the craft(工艺) slowly dying," he said while working on a boat. "Boats made from materials like plastic are cheaper and sell better." Besides, few young locals are interested in taking up the craft. While caique building is seen as an art, the work is tiring. It usually takes more than five years of hard training to learn how to build a caique independently.

The good news is that help is on the way. Kostas Damianidis, a researcher in the field of traditional Greek boat-building, is setting up a new craft museum on Samos. He also hopes to open a boat-building school within the museum.

To achieve his goals, Damianidis is turning to Kiassos for help. "It' s important to have someone with plenty of experience," he said. After more than 30 years in the business, Kiassos knows when to cut down a tree and where each piece should go on the boat. With one mistake, the boat could have problems. When you get it all right, it combines(结合) beauty and strength.

Kiassos is now finishing two caiques. "When a boat leaves, I'm sad," he said. "Yes, I'm happy when everything's okay. But it's like something is leaving, like a piece of me."
