Each year, the women of Olney, England, and Liberal, Kansas, compete in  unusual footrace. Dressed in  (apron) and headscarves, they wait at both towns' starting lines. Each woman holds a frying pan  one pancake inside. At the signal, the women flip their pancakes and they are off.

This "pancake racing" tradition is said to have started on Shrove Tuesday, 1445, in Olney,  is the day before the Christian season of Lent(大斋期) begins. During Lent, many people decide to give up sugary or fatty foods.

Legend says that in 1445, an Olney woman  (make) pancakes to use up some of her sugar and cooking fats before Lent. She lost track of time and  (sudden) heard the church bells ring, signaling the  (begin) of the Shrove Tuesday service.  (realize) that she was going to be late for church, she  (race) out, still wearing her apron and headscarf and holding her frying pan with a pancake in it.

In the following years, the woman's neighbors imitated her dash to church,  pancake racing was born. Olney women continue this Shrove Tuesday tradition more than five hundred years later.

Old English differs much from the English we use today. Middle English is the name given to the English used from around the 12th {#blank#}1{#/blank#} the 15th centuries. Many things played a part in the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (develop) of this new type of English. The most important contribution was from the Normans, a French-speaking people who  {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (defeat) England and took control of the country in 1066. However, the Norman Conquest did not affect English as much as the Angels and the Saxons'victory about 600 years earlier, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} led to old English replacing Celtic. Even though the Normans spoke French for the entire 250 years they ruled England, French did not replace English as the {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (one) language. On the other hand, the English language did borrow many words from French. This resulted in even {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (many) words with similar meanings, such as answer (from Old English) and reply (from Old French). Modern English appeared during the Renaissance in the 16th century.  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (pronounce) also went through huge changes during this period. Of course, this was not the end of the changes in the English language. The question of whether English will keep on changing in the future is {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (easily) to answer. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} is certain that this process will continue, and people will keep {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (invent) new words and new ways of saying things.

New research has found that eating regular balanced meals is more effective(有效的) in managing a healthy weight {#blank#}1{#/blank#} dieting.

Carried out by researchers at the University of Helsinki, the study looked at 2,452 women and 2,227 men, who {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(ask) to answer surveys which looked at factors(因素) influencing weight changes at age 24, and ten years later at age 34.

The researchers found among both men {#blank#}3{#/blank#} women, irregular eating and dieting in order to lose weight were two of the main factors that led to weight increasing. A woman's risk of putting on weight was also increased by giving birth to two or more {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(child), regularly drinking sugary drinks and feeling {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(disappoint) with life. For men, smoking was another important factor for putting on weight.

{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(usual), people try to prevent overweight by dieting. In the long term, it seems to make people {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(get) fatter, rather than prevent it.

Besides eating regularly and avoiding diets, physical activity was a main factor in {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(help) to protect women from putting on weight, while for men a higher level of {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(educate) and having a greater weight at the beginning of the study appeared to have a protective effect.

The researchers suggested that those {#blank#}10{#/blank#} want to keep a healthy weight long-term should now consider eating regular meals.
