Mum and I wanted to do something exciting during the summer vacation, so she 1  that we take the train to Grandma's house. Grandma lived far from our 2 , so we would spend one day and one night on the 3  just getting there.

A Frenchman went to New York to take a holiday. He didn't know a word of English. When he arrived in New York, he took a bus to a hotel. 

It was a sunny day. The Frenchman went out for a walk. When he went along the street, he thought he must remember the name of the street. On the wall near the street, he saw some English words. He wrote them down in his notebook. "Now I know the name of the street," he said to himself. "It will be easy for me to get back to the hotel. "

He walked for a long time in the city. Then he felt tired and wanted to go back to his hotel. He took the notebook out of his backpack and showed the words to a young woman. The young woman read the words and looked at the Frenchman. She didn't know what he wanted. 

Then the Frenchman stopped an old man and showed him the words. The old man didn't know what the Frenchman wanted, either. 

At last, the Frenchman saw a young man. He knew some French. When the Frenchman showed him the words and asked where the street was, the young man laughed, because the words in the notebook read: One-way street(单行道). 

Once there was a young boy who was known as a fast runner in his village. He only1 winning every race and becoming more successful.

One day，the boy took part in a running race in his village. He won the 200，100 and 50- meter races without any problem. He was2 of himself and received great applause（掌声) . 

But his grandfather came and asked him to have a race with two unexpected competitors(参赛者), an old man and a blind girl. The boy thought it was 3 but accepted.

Life skills are very helpful.

Lily is a little girl at school. She is shy and many students do not know her. But she enjoys playing football. Her friends and classmates always laugh at Lily for her interest in football.  ▲ , and she wants to become a great football player. 

 Every day, after coming back from school, Lily quickly finishes her homework and goes out to practise football. Her mother understands Lily's love for the sport and always encourages her to play football.

Working for a big company in London on a salary (薪水)of over £100, 000, you might expect Grayden Reece-Smith to have a luxurious (奢侈)lifestyle, going on expensive holidays or driving a sports car around south London, where he lives. In fact, the 28-year-old leads a very different life from his colleagues. He gives away everything he earns over £42, 000–a number that he thought he could comfortably live on. 

Over the past five years, Reece-Smith has handed over more than £250, 000 to organizations such as International Care Ministries, which helps poor families in the Philippines, and the Against Malaria Foundation. He is part of a growing number of young people described as "influential altruists". Influential altruists donate regularly to a charity which they think will have a great impact(影响). Some change careers to make more money, which can then be given away. 

Reece-Smith considered working in the charity after graduating from university, but thought that he could make a bigger difference by donating a large part of his salary. He had volunteered as a teacher at a school in Tanzania, but then realized that earning and giving would be more effective. "The cost of my flights there could have paid the salaries of two teachers for an entire year, " he says. Instead, he could "stay at home, living a nice life and still make a huge difference in the world". 

He is not mean with money-last year he went to Cuba on holiday, and spent several thousand pounds on a new sofa. But his lifestyle isn't as luxurious as some of the people he works with. "I usually don't buy supermarket-branded food products, but I don't own a car. Other people on my salary might have a bigger house. Some of my colleagues have four-bedroom houses, but we only bought what we needed-a two-bedroom flat. £42, 000 is more than enough to live on and still save, " he says.
