There were two high mountains between Jizhou in the south and Heyang in the north. One was called Taihang Mountain and the other Wangwu Mountain. Both of the mountains were very high. Just to the north of the mountains lived an old man called Yu Gong who was nearly 90 years old. With the two high mountains just in front of his house, his family and he had to walk a long way around the mountains whenever they had something to do on the other side of the mountains. One day, Yu Gong called all his family together to talk about how to move the two mountains to other places. His wife said, "An old man like you cannot even move a small hill, not to mention (提) the two high mountains. Even if you can, where can you throw so much earth and stone? ""The Bohai Sea is big enough to contain(容纳) all the earth and stone, "Yu Gong said.
So it was decided. His children started to dig the mountains, led by the old man Yu Gong. A man named Zhi Sou saw them working and tried to stop them, saying, "You are so silly! You re so old and weak that you can't even take away the grass and trees. How can you move the high mountains?" "You're wrong." Yu Gong said with a sigh(叹气). "Look, my sons can continue my work after my death. When my sons die, my grandchildren will continue. So generations after generations there's no end. But the mountains can't grow higher. Do you still say I can't move them away?" Later the Heaven God learning of Yu Gong's story, was greatly moved. He then ordered another god to come down and take the two high mountains away.
The story tells us that so long as one is determined(有决心的) and sticks to(坚持) it long enough, anything can be done, no matter how difficult it is.
"What Would You Do?" is a TV program. The program which is hosted by the news reporter John Quinounes who is popular with many people. It tests what people will do when they see someone is in trouble so as to remind us to stand up for the people in need Here is last week's program. In a cake shop, two actors acted as a blind woman named Pamela and a man clerk who looked down upon the blind woman. Hidden cameras were recording what was happening. The blind woman came into the shop and bought a box of twelve cakes. The clerk treated the woman badly at first. Then he cheated(欺骗) her when he gave her the change. He only gave her 6 dollars instead of 34 dollars. Would someone be brave enough to stand up for the blind woman? Yes! A customer the cake shop stopped the clerk from cheating the blind woman and treating her badly. And other customers joined in soon. John appeared in the end and interviewed the first customer who helped Pamela out. She said it was necessary to give a hand to the people in need. "A psychology (心理学)professor once said, " she said, " it's difficult to take the first step to stand up. It needs courage." |

I am living with an old English couple, in the west of London. They have a clean four-bedroom house. This is a new house. It has two bathrooms and a garden with many beautiful flowers. I have a bedroom of my own.
There are some shopping centres and a restaurant next to the house, and the house is close to an underground station. It takes about 30 minutes to take an underground to the centre of London.
I think a homestay may be a good choice for you if it is your first time to visit abroad. The local people are friendly and ready to help. If you want to celebrate the holidays with them, you will get to know more about their culture and customs.
