Fishing with Grandpa

    One day, my grandfather went fishing, and let me go with him. He handed the rod (钓竿) to me, held my 1 and taught me how to throw my line into the water. Our bobbers floated (浮标漂浮着) together as we sat there, hoping for a bite. The sun 2 us. We sat and talked, “I remember when I could sit here and watch the fish 3 in the water,” he said. “Sometimes, they'd jump out and 4beside me. I didn't need a rod and bait (饵) at that moment.” “We have to be 5,” he continued, “The fish may come or they may not. It doesn't matter. We're out in the 6. It's a beautiful day. We're lucky to have the warmth of the sun. If it had rained, we wouldn't be here. ” He sat against a tree. “Yes, it's a 7 day,” he said. I watched our dobbers. 8 fish pulled them under that day. It didn't matter. I was with Grandpa. I felt grown up. Just being with him was special. He was well loved by everyone and I wanted to 9 him when I grew up. He'd worked hard all his life for what little he had, but he could still find time to laugh. He was a relaxing man. In the short time we had together, he 10 me many things: how to hold a rod, the value of a good time, the value of a good friend, respect for my elders, and the importance of working hard and living harder. The list is long.

    I was born with a heart disease. As I grew up, parts of my heart started to1and I was often out of breath. So when I was eight, the doctors opened up my chest to2it. When they saw the state of my heart, they told my parents, "We don't expect him to3 the night. "I was in and out of a coma (昏迷)for three months. Every day the fact that I wasn't4 was a good thing.

    Finally, the doctors5I'd be better off at home—saying that I wasn't going to live long. But I carried on and had something close to a   6childhood. As a teenager, I began to7 heart failure again. But I was 8to go to college, become a manager and get married to Jo.

    I started my own9so I could work flexible(灵活的)hours, 10. Jo and I had two children: Josh and Liam. I11to keep a good standard of life for everyone, 12when I was waking up feeling sick every morning. By January last year, my heart failure was so13that I often couldn't walk more than a few yards.

    I was worried about not being around for my 14I had to explain to Josh that the call telling me an organ(器官)had been found could come any time and I'd be 15to hospital, perhaps before I could say goodbye. A few days later, the phone rang and Josh said, "Is that the doctor with your new16?"However, it was  17a salesman.

    May 4 was the day a transplant(移植)18was found. I was out of hospital within five weeks and within a few19, feeling much better. By October, I was taking part in a 30 mile bike ride.

    These days I spend a lot of time talking to kids with heart20. I want to support others who have had a hard time.

 Jason and his father were going to a supermarket by car to pick up some apples. It had been an unusual day. The sky was dark but there were few clouds. As they drove up the street, there started to be a loud sound heard across the ground.

 Jason's father immediately realized that a tornado(龙卷风) was coming. He stopped the car and told Jason to get out immediately. Jason and his father got out of the car and made their way to the closest building. By this time the wind was blowing harder, and it was hard to see or hear. Jason couldn't see his dad anymore. He also realized that he wasn't getting to the building fast enough. He was afraid he would be picked up by the wind and thrown into the air.

 As he made his way towards the building, he noticed a field to his right. He could see an irrigation ditch (灌溉渠). He felt really afraid inside because he'd never been in a tornado before. His heart began to race and he could feel sweat dripping down from his face. In a panic, he started running towards the ditch as fast as he could. He stumbled(绊倒)a bit as he climbed down into it, but soon he was lying flat on the ground, hiding inside. He could hear his heart beating even more loudly and felt his whole body shaking.____

 After a while, the wind died down and the loud roaring sound was gone. Jason slowly lifted his head and nervously looked around. What he saw was a great mess. Jason could hardly recognize the buildings in front of him because of all the damage.

 He stood up and with his legs shaking and walked to the building. Once there, he pushed the door open and went inside. It was a public building owned by the city. It was empty, but Jason could hear noises further inside. He walked into the large room and saw his dad. He ran across the room and gave him a big hug.

"Jason! How are you? I've been so worried about you!" said his father. "I couldn't find you anywhere!"

 Jason breathed a sigh of a relief(松了一口气) and sat down. He did have a story to tell!

As a teacher for over 40 years, Zhang saw many girls quit school(退学) because their families were poor or thought only boys needed education.She wanted to change this, so she worked hard to create a school where girls could study for free.

    ▲     Zhang lived with her students and worked long hours, from early morning until late at night.She travelled thousands of miles to visit students' homes in the mountains, talking to parents about letting their daughters study.Even when she became very sick, she kept working to help her students.

Thanks to Zhang's hard work, almost 2,000 girls from poor mountain areas have gone to college.Many of them have become teachers, doctors or police officers in their hometowns.Her school now has the best college entrance examination results in the area.

"As long as I can breathe, I will keep teaching," Zhang once said.Her kind heart and hard work have made her a hero to many people in China.
