Would you BET on the future of this man? He is 53 years old. Most of his adult life has been a losing struggle against debt and misfortune. A war injury has made his left hand stop functioning, and he has often been in prison. Driven by heaven-knows-what motives, he determines to write a book.

The book turns out to be one that has appealed to the world for more than 350 years. That former prisoner was Cervantes (塞万提斯), and the book was Don Quixote (《堂吉诃德》). And the story brings an interesting question: why do some people find new energy and creativity to the end of their days, but others go to seed long before?

We've all known people who run out of steam before they reach life's halfway mark. I'm not talking about those who fail to get to the top. We can't all get there. I'm talking about people who have stopped learning on growing because they have taken in the fixed attitudes and opinions that all too often come with passing years.

Most of us, in fact, progressively narrow the variety of our lives. We succeed in our field of specialization and then become trapped in it. Nothing surprises us. We lose our sense of wonder. But, if we are willing to learn, the opportunities are everywhere.

The things we learn in maturity (成熟) seldom involve information and skills. We learn to bear with the things we can't change. We learn to avoid self-pity. We learn that however much we try to please, some people are never going to love us-an idea that troubles at first but is eventually relaxing.

With high motivation and enthusiasm, we can keep on learning. Then we will know how important it is to have meaning in our life. However, we can achieve meaning only if we have made a commitment to something

larger than our own little egos (自我) , whether to loved ones, to fellow humans, to work, or to some moral concept.

Many of us regard "commitment" with such "caring" jobs as teaching and nursing. But doing any ordinary job as well as one can is in itself an admirable commitment. People who work toward such excellence whether they are driving a truck or running a store make the world better just by being the kind of people they are. They've learned life's most valuable lesson.

Lily was a cheerful (开朗的) girl. She always had a big smile on her face. One day, she noticed an old man named Grumble sitting beside a river. The old man looked sad. Lily wanted to make him smile, so she walked up to him with a friendly greeting. "Good morning, Mr. Grumble! Why the long face?" she asked.

Grumble said, "What's there to be happy about? Life is full of troubles." Lily laughed and replied, "Troubles are like big and scary thunderclouds (雷雨云), Mr. Grumble. But just like clouds, they pass, making way for the sun to shine again. You should try looking on the bright side!"

Lily made a bet (打赌) with Grumble, saying, "I bet I can make you smile by the end of the day." Grumble challenged her, "You're welcome to try, but it won't be easy."

For the rest of the day, Lily did all kinds of funny and silly things to make Grumble laugh. She told jokes, sang like nobody was watching, and even made faces. However, Grumble was still unhappy. As the sun began to set, Lily decided to give it one last try. She took a deep breath and broke into a joyful dance.

Surprisingly, Grumble couldn't help laughing. He let out a chuckle (咯咯笑声), and then another. Before he knew it, he was laughing heartily, his sadness giving way to happiness. Lily had won the contest (比赛), but more importantly, she showed Grumble that becoming cheerful was not difficult.

Happiness is a choice, and we can find it when we choose to see the brighter side of life.

Before the development of phones, the natives of the island of La Gomera were able to use a whistled language to communicate with each other from mountain peak to mountain peak. It is known as the Silbo Gomero.

Invented by the island's natives-Guanches, the Silbo Gomero was the only form that they used to communicate with others far away until the first half of the 20th century. During the 16^th century, it was taught to Spanish settlers. Then it spread to other neighbouring islands and was used by much more people.

The whistled language has a vocabulary of over 4,000 words. The difficulty of this language lies in the fact that it replaces the five vowels of Spanish language with two clearly different whistles and twenty-two consonants of it with other four different whistles. People can tell the differences of the whistles according to how high or low the sound is and whether they are interrupted or continued.

However, with the rise of modern communications, the special language was dying out, and by the later half of the 20th century very few people still knew how to whistle in this manner. Luckily, the local government has managed to reverse this situation, mainly through laws that make it a required subject in schools across the island of La Gomera. Gradually, it is developed and practised by a large number of people. In 2009, the Silbo Gomero was claimed to be an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

Nowadays, the Silbo Gomero is also used during festivals and ceremonies. To prevent it from disappearing, the native people continue to make great effort. Although there's not a special visitor center to appreciate the amazement of the whistled language, that is not to say it won't be one in the future.

Keeping pets has become popular. Cats and dogs are the two most common pets. People also keep other pets like rabbits, birds, and even snakes. People like staying with pets because keeping a pet is good for them. Here are some points about it.
