Most people have heard of the Great Wall of China, but not many people outside of China know about the Grand Canal.

This man-made waterway — known in China as Da Yunhe — is more than 1,700 kilometres long and some parts of it are more than 2,000 years old. It connects the north of China with Hangzhou, a city in the southern part of the country. It's the longest man-made waterway in the world.

It was built as a way to transport grain(谷物) from the rich agricultural land in China's south to cities in the north. In fact, it's not one canal, but a system of canals and rivers connected together. It's still an important part of the transport system in China. Thousands of boats use it every day to transport grain and many other types of cargo(货物).

Now the Chinese government is doing new work on the Grand Canal. It is making parts of it deeper, so bigger ships can use it. The canal will also help to move water. There is a lot of rain in the south of China, but not as much in the north. The canal will carry millions of litres of water from the south to the north.

The Grand Canal is much less famous than the Great Wall, and not very many tourists visit it. But it's possible to go on a cruise(乘船游览)along some of the oldest parts of the canal. Passengers on these cruises see beautiful parts of China that other visitors don't see.

Jessica Long is a very fast Paralympic (残奥会的) swimmer. She was born in Russia 1 a disability (残疾). This was difficult for her mother and Jessica 2 in a special home for children. 

When Jessica was thirteen months old, 3 American couple, Steve and Beth Long, 4 this home. They adopted (收养) her and took her to the USA with 5 . Jessica had a new mom and dad. 

When Jessica was eighteen months old, the 6 said she must lose her legs below the knee. They gave Jessica artificial legs and she learned to 7 for the first time. 

When Jessica was a young child, she 8 to swim in her grandparents' swimming pool. 9 the age of ten, she started to swim in competitions. "She was 10 the first person in the swimming pool and the last person out of it," says her father. 

At twelve, Jessica went to her 11 Paralympic Games in Greece. Her family went with her 12 she was very young. 

Nobody thought Jessica would win, but they were 13 . She won three gold medals (奖牌)!

At fourteen, Jessica went to the World Swimming Championships in South Africa. She won nine more gold medals and she broke five world records!

Jessica likes other 14 , too. She enjoys 15 and, at fourteen, she started rock climbing. Jessica Long is really amazing.

Liu Zhenxiang, or Dasuo, wanted to be a comedian(喜剧演员) when he was young. In middle school, he turned a story in his Chinese book into a comedy. And it won a prize(奖) in a competition(比赛) for middle school students.

At the age of eighteen, he started a club and wrote comedies for the club. His comedies were very popular with teachers and students.

After he finished the study, Liu decided to work as an actor. However, a friend told him that it was difficult to be a great actor and that he should first find a stable(稳定的) job.

Then Liu started to work in a bank in Shenyang. But he found the job boring. A year later, he decided to do something he really loved.

Liu started to write comedies for a troupe(表演团) in Shenyang for free in his free time. With his help, the troupe joined in an important competition for young actors in China. Because of that, he started to write comedies for TV shows. He worked in the bank in the day and wrote comedies at night. He was tired but happy.

In 2017, Liu joined an online show called Brain Boom. Then he left his job and moved to Beijing. At first, he had a hard time in Beijing, but he didn't lose heart. Later, he joined Super Sketch Show and made a big name.

In the end, Liu made his dream come true.

I am Sandy Brown. Tony, Mary and I are in the same class. They are brother and sister but they don't like the same food.

 Mary doesn't want to be fat. So, for breakfast, she only has an egg and a cup of milk. For lunch, she has some vegetables and rice with her friends. For dinner, she likes fruit salad. She likes ice- cream and hamburgers, but she doesn't eat them. She thinks they can make her fat.

 What about Tony? He likes sports very much and he plays volleyball well. He always has a big breakfast: two eggs, some milk and salad. For lunch, he likes chicken, a hamburger and some rice. After school, he plays volleyball with his classmates. So he is hungry in the evening. He likes some vegetables, two hamburgers and some fruit for dinner.

For most human history, the stars sh one brightly in a dark night sky. But today, with many man- made lights, it is difficult for us to watch some wonderful sights: stars, planets and even galaxies(星系). This is in fact a kind of light pollution.

According to scientific research, you can see about 2,500 stars without using any special tools. But because of light pollution, you can only see 200 to 300 stars from the countryside, and no more than 10 stars from a city. In most big cities, people cannot see stars like they did in their childhood.

The main reasons of more brightness of the night sky are industrialization(工业化) and the growing use of outdoor LEDs, which are much brighter than traditional lighting. It brings a lot of bad results. Scientists find it hard to see the stars and planets. And too much light might make birds lose their ways at night. Some insects(昆虫) often fly towards light and may knock into buildings and lose lives. Sometimes light pollution makes us have sleeping problems.

Small actions, big changes. To stop things from going worse, we should use the right amount(数量) of light, in the right place and at the right time. Using yellow- colored light instead of white light, shining lights down at the ground instead of up into the sky are also helpful. We'd better remind people around us to help cut down light pollution as well.

Hopefully, in the near future, humans can enjoy the beauty of the night sky again and all wildlife will live a peaceful life!
