Almost everyone knows Garfield. He is a fun-loving cat in comic strips(连环漫画). Most people like to read about this cute cat.

But who made Garfield? Jim Davis did. When Jim was a young boy, he was sick for a long time. He had to stay in bed. He wanted to do something, so he drew pictures. Jim's pictures made people laugh. When Jim put words with his pictures, people laughed harder. He started making comic strips. Jim read other comic strips. He saw there were a lot of dogs in the comics, but no cats. That's how he got the idea for Garfield.

I know how hard it is to make friends in a new school. I once joined the football team and the music club in my school of Toronto. I was very popular at that time and made a lot of friends. It made me very happy and my school life was very great.

Everything became different when I was 16 years old, because my parents decided to move to    Florida. Who can quickly adapt to (适应) a completely strange environment? So changing to a new   school was not easy for me. At the beginning, days in the new school were much more different than I thought. The class schedule (时间表) was different, and the teachers and students were strange and fresh to me. Some kids tried to be nice to me, but I was afraid to have a talk with them.

After staying in the new school for a few weeks, I realized that no one tried to communicate with me anymore, so I began to feel lonely. Two months later we had a course that required teamwork. Then, all the students came to study and even tried to help each other. I realized that they were hard-working and friendly just like me. I began to make friends with them. Several years later, we still keep in touch with each other and they have become a great treasure to me.

Sometimes, if we can't change the environment around us, change ourselves in time. And try to get used to the life in different places.

I have forgotten the name of the old lady, who was a customer on my newspaper route(送报路线)when I was twelve. Yet she taught me a 1 that I shall never forget.

On a winter afternoon a friend and I were 2 stones onto the roof(屋顶)of the old lady's house near her garden. I found myself a 3 and threw it. The stone was too smooth, however, so it slipped(滑) from my hand as I let it go and headed straight for a small window on the lady's door. At the sound of 4 glass, we knew we were 5 . We ran faster than any of our stones 6 off her roof.

I was too afraid about getting 7 that night and worried about the old lady with the broken window in winter. However, a few days later, when I was sure that I hadn't been discovered, I stated to feel it a great shame 8 making her so much trouble. She still greeted me with a smile each day 9 I gave her the newspaper, but I was no longer able to act comfortably when seeing her.

I decided that I would 10 my paper deliver(送) money, and in three weeks I had seven dollars. I put the 11 in an envelope with a note saying that I was 12 for breaking her window and hoped that the seven dollars would cover the cost of repairing it.

The next day, I handed the old lady her paper. She thanked me for the paper and gave me a bag of biscuits she had made herself. I thanked her and ate the biscuits as I 13 my newspaper route. After several biscuits, I felt an envelope and 14 it out of the bag. When I opened the envelope, I was 15 . Inside were the seven dollars and a short note that said, "I'm proud of you."
