The face-down Generation(一代)
If you were born in the 2000s, you are called the oh-ohs. The 21st century. That would make you young, creative, connected, world- wide, and no doubt smart. Maybe good-looking, too. Right? But what do other people think about your generation?
Some adults worry that you're more interested in the screen in front of you than the world around you. They think of you as the “face-down generation" because you use your phone so much. They wonder how you will deal with school, friends, and family.
Other adults worry that today's youth are spoilt (溺爱) and don't want to face the challenges of adult life. Many children born in the 1990s and 2000s were raised by “helicopter parents". They were always there to guide and help their children with a busy program filled with homework and after-school activities such as dancing, drawing, or sports. With parents who do everything for them, today's youth seem to prefer to live like teenagers even when they are in their 20s or 30s.
Does the face down generation need a heads-up? Well, probably not. The fact is that many of today's teenagers are better educated and more creative than past generations. They seem to be willing to become leaders. More young people than ever volunteer to help their communities. There are also brave young people such as Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize for pushing girls' rights to go to school.
So if you're one of the oh-ohs, there's reason to be hopeful about the future. Things are looking up for the face-down generation. Chances are that you do great and laugh out loud.
"Teenager" means people from 13 to 19 years old. Although they are young, they have to make many important choices by themselves. They need to think about questions like these: Can I get into a university? {#blank#}1{#/blank#} However, other people also influence (影响) their choices (选择).
Who influences teenagers? It depends on the kind of choice. When teenagers buy things, friends are the most important influence. This is especially true for clothes and music. TV shows, advertisements and parents also influence teenagers. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Some teenagers say it's best to regard (把……看成) both parents and friends as influences. James, a 17-year-old boy says, "Parents are really important because they can tell you what is right and wrong." {#blank#}3{#/blank#} As a girl said, "If our parents don't let us make our own choices, maybe in the future we won't know how to do it." {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Because friends sometimes know more about them than their parents do.
Do you depend on parents or others when you don't know what to do and how to do it? {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Your future is in your hand.
A. What kind of jobs do I want? B. Teenagers should make more friends. C. They also need listen to parents' opinions. D. And they feel friends can often be a big help. E. But teenagers also feel they need to make choices themselves. F. Whoever (无论谁) you depend on, the correct choice is the most important. G. About more serious things, parents are probably the most important influence. |

It is natural for young people to admire cool young "idols(偶像)". We spend a lot of time on them — even {#blank#}1{#/blank#} time than we spend on our studies or work. We often wonder what we could do {#blank#}2{#/blank#} cool like them.
Well, guess what? Many of your idols {#blank#}3{#/blank#} to "look" cool. If you could see into their private lives, you would find these stars aren't so bright. Some of {#blank#}4{#/blank#} might not be as honest, kind or hard-working as you are!
When I was a teenager, I admired pop idols, too. Then, one day, I discovered Leonard Cohen and Neil Young. They were very common people {#blank#}5{#/blank#} played the guitar. They wore no special clothes, and they had no crazy fans. They didn't need to be special because their songs were great and meaningful. They told the {#blank#}6{#/blank#}: Life is hard and the road you take might sometimes be lonely. They taught me that it was okay if I was not popular and cool all of the time. I still listen to them today.
Modern "idol culture" often {#blank#}7{#/blank#} the wrong message that life is always easy and fun. But the best actors, the most {#blank#}8{#/blank#} sports stars and the most creative scientists all face many difficulties.
Idols can serve as important role {#blank#}9{#/blank#} in our lives, so it's very important to choose the right ones. We should admire people who teach us important values that can guide us on the right road. That's what we {#blank#}10{#/blank#} need. The next time you see some pretty, popular "stars", ask yourself: Do I really need these people in my life?
