A poor boy lived in a small town. He sold goods from door to door to pay for school.

One day, he only had one cent left and he was hungry. He decided that he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, when a young woman opened the door, the boy was shy, he just asked for some water. The woman knew he was hungry, so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked. "How much should I pay for it?" "You won't pay for it. My mother has told me that it is good to help the people who are in trouble," she replied. The boy said, "Then I thank you from my heart."

As the boy left that house, he felt stronger. He knew he had many things to do.

Many years later, the young woman became ill. The local doctors couldn't save her. People had to send her to a big city. When the doctor knew who the woman was, he was excited and tried his best to save her life. He succeeded. The woman needed to pay for the medical bill. The doctor learned that she couldn't afford it. "Simply avoid her. " Abby listened closely, as I continued, "If she says any more 1 things to you, I'll go to your teacher. I'll make sure you are never in a (n) 2 where you have to sit next to her again."

At that time, Allyson, my then eight-year-old, came to 3 us and listened to every word. Neither of my daughters interrupted (打断) as I finished my heartfelt speech, filled with 4 wisdom. Then, as I was telling them what I thought right, Allyson's real words of 5 came about. "Mom," she said, "I was just thinking. Maybe Abby should be that girl's 6 so that she can bear (容忍) her. In that way, she can let that girl see forgiveness (谅解) and 7 through her."

Hmm, I became the 8 . At that moment, I realized that although I was wearing the "mother's hat", the "hat" certainly didn't make me 9 all the time. In fact, I wanted to pull that hat over my face and hide myself so that they couldn't see my 10 look.

"Yes, that's a good point," I commented (评论), 11 a half smile at my girls. "Abby, you deal with this situation the way you think is right. " "OK, " she said, giving me a quick hug before walking out of the door and off to school. "Bye, Mom! " Allyson called, 12 her big sister to go out of the door.

I was left alone—in my slippers (拖鞋). In those following 13 moments, I was lost in thought. I did feel 14 my two amazing daughters—small in size but big in heart. Sometimes our children have great lessons to teach us—15 we are willing to listen.

That lesson came more than ten years ago, and I'll never forget how much I have learned from my children.

 阅读下列短文,从下面每小题的 A 、B 、C 、D 四个选项中选择最佳 选项。

Wilbur the pig woke up and looked for Charlotte the spider. Wilbur wanted to thank Charlotte for her help yesterday. He found her sitting in the corner. An egg sac(卵囊)was next to her on the web.

"What is that thing next to you, Charlotte?"

Charlotte looked very proud of herself and said "I made it myself. This egg sac is the best work I have ever made. "

Wilbur had to agree that it was truly beautiful, but he still did not know what was on the inside. Charlotte told him that there were five hundred and fourteen eggs in the sac. Wilbur could not believe his ears. Charlotte said she was not kidding because she counted it herself.

Wilbur saw Charlotte was not in the mood and asked, "It is really pretty, but why are you sad?"

"I an just sad that I will not see my children come out of their eggs next spring, " Charlotte said in a soft voice. "I just have a feeling that I will not be around to see that happen. I'm feeling my age. I'm not young anymore, Wilbur. But I don't want you to worry about me. This is your big day today. Look at the web I made. Doesn't it show up well with the dew(露水)on it?"

Wilbur was surprised that although Charlotte needed to make the egg sac, she still made the web for him while she was aging fast. Charlotte's web never looked more beautiful than it looked this morning.
