A lady and her husband in usual clothes walkedinto the president of Harvard's outer office. "We want to see thepresident," the lady said softly.Looking at the usual couple, the secretary said, "He'll be busy all day."" We'll wait," the lady replied.

   For hours, the secretary did nothing for them,hoping that they would finally go away. They didn't. "Maybe if they justsee you for a few minutes, they'll leave," the secretary finallytold the president.

   The presidentlooked down at the couple.The lady told him, "We had a son that hadstudied in Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. But he was accidentally killed.And my husband and I would like to build something for him in Harvard. "Madam," the president saidangrily, "we can't put up a statue forevery person who attended Harvard and died."

   "Oh, no," the lady explainedquickly, "we mean we would givea building to Harvard." The president lookedat their usual clothes, and then said, "A building! Do youknow how much a building costs? It took us over seven and a half million dollarsto build Harvard."

   The lady turned to her husband and said quietly,"Is that all it coststo start a university?" Her husband nodded.Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California wherethey built a university with their name—a memorial（纪念）to a son that Harvardno longer cared about.

   You can easily judge the character of others byhow they treat those who can do nothing for them or to them.

Reading books increases our knowledge and understanding of the world around us. To encourage people to find the fun of reading and pay tribute (表达敬意) to famous writers, the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO 联合国教科文组织) fixed April 23rd as World Book and Copyright (版权) Day in 1926 in Spain.

The idea of specially choosing a day to celebrate books came from Spanish writer Vicente Clavel Andres. In 1922 he suggested the idea as a way to remember Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. Four years later the first celebration took place on October 7th, because it is said to be Cervantes' birthday. But the celebration was then moved to April 23rd, the date of his death in 1930.

In 1995, the UNESCO decided to pay tribute to writers and books around the world as a way of encouraging everyone to read books. Choosing April 23rd seemed proper. Because it's not only the date of Cervantes' death, but also the date of the famous writer William Shakespeare's death. Besides, several famous writers were born on April 23rd, making the date special in the literature (文学) world.

Starting in 2001, every year, one city around the world would be the World Book Capital for a year. The chosen city always holds activities to encourage people of all ages at home and abroad to read and spread its values. Activities include reading books and plays, handing out bookmarks and announcing (公布) the winners of literary (文学) competitions.

Mrs. Black is an English woman. She is eighty years old. She likes cats. She has many cats at home. The students all like to come to her home. They like to play with her cats. More and more（越 来 越 多 的）cats come to the old woman's home. Soon she has too many cats. The old woman can't feed（喂养） them all."The students like my cats,"she thinks. So she gives the students her cats. Then she is happy. The students are happy, and the cats are happy, too.

However, Belachew Girma didn't always like to laugh. In fact, he wasn't very happy in the past. After his wife (妻子) died, Belachew Girma thought he would 4 laugh again. Then, someone taught him how to laugh. Belachew Girma started to know: laughing made him feel good. So he wanted to laugh all the time.

Belachew Girma practiced laughing night and day. The only time he didn't practice laughing was when he was 5 . Someone told Belachew Girma about a laughter 6 and he decided to take part in it. He went on practicing his laughing 7 . After laughing for over 3 hours, Belachew Girma 8 the competition. He 9 a world record holder (持有人)! He didn't have time to be sad or to worry 10 he was always laughing.

Henry was a pen name of an American 1 of short stories. His 2 name was William Sydney Porter. He was 3 in North Carolina in 1862. 4 a young boy he lived an exciting life. He did not go to school for very long, but he tried to teach 5 everything he needed to know.

 According to a research more than 130 billion pounds of uneaten food go to waste in Laura's country each year. That is about 30% of the yearly food supply (供应). It is a sad fact especially when you consider how many families and homeless people are in hunger.

 When Laura saw her school dining hall throw away food that was not eaten at all every day, she came up with an idea. She started a project to help her school dining hall to give away uneaten food to homeless shelters (庇护所) in her community. In the past three years, the same project has spread to other schools and some fast food restaurants throughout the city. The project is called Feed& find, and has already fed thousands of people in her city.

 How does it work? Through an app, Feed& amp; Find matches local homeless shelters with school dining halls and restaurants that have uneaten food to provide. When dining halls or restaurants have uneaten food left, they can use the app to share the information about the food. A truck driver working for the project is then sent to pick it up and take it to a shelter.

 Pretty cool, right? It's not surprising that people in other cities have got in touch with Laura hoping that she could have developed similar projects for their communities.

 Some people, however, have concerns about the safety of the uneaten food. They think such food may not be clean enough. Still, this project is a clever way to help solve the problem of food waste and it helps those in need.
