阅读理解

In a pudding shop near my house, many delicious things are laid out in a row. Here you are allowed to sample* them before coming to a decision.

One day, I asked the shop1whether some people, who didn't want to buy puddings, would take advantage of having samples. And I learned it was exactly the2. "There's one old gentleman, for example, he comes here almost every week." she told me, "He has every sample, though he3buys a single one, and I doubt..."

She was still speaking when an elderly gentleman walked4the shop. "That's the very gentleman I've been telling you about," whispered she. "Just watch5now." And then turning to the man:

"Would you like to sample them, sir? Here's a spoon for you to use."

The elderly gentleman,6but tidily dressed, accepted the spoon and began eagerly to sample one after another of the puddings. "This is quite good." "This is not bad either,7a little too heavy." I was sure he didn't feel that he was in any way8the shop. I felt pity for the man and went up to him:

"Pardon me, sir? Let me9you one of these puddings.

He jumped back as if he had been stung*, and the blood rushed into his face, making it10.

"Excuse me," he said, "undoubtedly you have11me for someone else. I've never seen you. And with a quick decision he turned to the shop girl and said in a12voice, "Kindly pack* me up this one please! I'll take it! Everyone turned to him as he13one of the largest and most expensive of the puddings.

The girl took down the pudding from its stand, while he pulled out a worn little pocketbook and began counting out shillings* and pennies. How I wished for the14to unsay my silly words! It was too late though, and I felt that the15thing I could do now would be walk away. And that was the last I saw or heard of the old man. Now he can never come here to sample puddings any more.

①When it comes to Chinese students considering studying in foreign countries, many of them usually believe that life will be easy and enjoyable. Unluckily, it's possible that students with those thoughts will be disappointed very soon after landing at the airport.

②So, what are the problems you may have, and how can you deal with them?

③Teaching and learning styles in America are very different from those in China, requiring more critical thinking (批判性思维) and teamwork. In a normal American classroom, one project might be done by a study group in which every person has their own responsibility.

④So don't worry about your language or any grammar mistakes. Just watch what other students do, and don't be afraid of asking any questions. The discussions, or sometimes even arguments, that your group members and you hold are possible to be the beginning of a friendship.

⑤Besides schoolwork, another important thing faced by overseas students is homesickness or loneliness. You may miss your parents' cooking, your pets, or even your old bed. Being away from home can create bitter feelings, especially when faced with the challenges of getting used to a new environment.

⑥What I strongly suggest is to try hard to deal with these feelings. Be open to new friendships. Sign up for school activities, and give yourself permission to enjoy life at school, even if you miss home a lot. Be organized and keep a diary to check your progress. Write down three new things that you're grateful for every evening, as well as three things you're looking forward to every morning.

⑦Studying abroad is never simple. In fact, there will be many difficulties every day. But I'm sure you will overcome your difficulties and make your time overseas a success.

 阅读下列短文,从每小题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出一个最佳选项。

On December 17, 1903, Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first successful powered flight in history, making their dream come true.

It all started when Orville was 7 and Wilbur was 11. Their father gave them a toy helicopter(直升机), which made them dream of flying. Their mother, who knew much about machines and science, also influenced them a lot.

When the brothers grew up, they entered the printing business. Then they opened a bicycle repair shop. It wasn't long before they were making their own bikes. However, the brothers never stopped to study flight. They studied what other people learned about flight. By 1900, the Wright brothers were ready to test their first Flyer. They tried many times. Finally, on December 17, 1903, they achieved success.

That day, the brothers flew four times. Orville flew the Flyer the first time. That flight lasted 12 seconds and went 120 feet. Their second flight went 175 feet and the third 200 feet. Wilbur flew the fourth flight. It reached 852 feet in 59 seconds. After that last flight, the Flyer became too broken to fly again because of the strong wind.

They kept testing new designs to improve their Flyer. Later they began to teach others to fly. They even opened their own flying school. The brothers did make travel more convenient for people.
