Imagine you're at a restaurant. You order a salad with beautiful green lettuce (生菜)， nice red tomatoes, yellow peppers and cucumber. When it comes, you can't wait to take that first mouthful. But stop for a minute and think about how long it actually took to get to your plate. Not from the kitchen, but from the farm.

Let's take a look at a salad served in the United States. "Fresh" food, such as the lettuce, might be grown locally. But what about the other food on your plate? Nowadays, the country of origin (来源) of most of our fresh produce (农产品) - that's the place where produce was grown - is thousands of kilometers away. Produce was picked, washed, packed and brought to a center halfway around the world before it traveled to a store near you. So food which looks fresh has actually traveled in a refrigerated truck for a week.

But that isn't the only problem. Food needs transportation, and all forms of transportation cause air pollution. The farther food travels, the more gas is used, so more pollution is set free. Shipping fresh produce can add up to forty-five times more pollution to the air.

There is a solution, however. We can stop eating food from other countries, and we can buy fresh produce grown locally. The lettuce picked yesterday will taste a lot better. It'll also be healthier than the lettuce picked a week ago. Eating locally-grown produce also means that you eat more kinds. We forget that different fruits and vegetables grow in different seasons. Unluckily, this means we have to eat seasonal fruits and vegetables. That means we can't eat fresh summer fruits and vegetables in the winter. But we really shouldn't anyway!

In China, there is a fun activity on a baby's 1st birthday. People call it "Zhuazhou". 

On that day, parents usually put a table on the bed. On the table, there are some books, pens, rulers, food, toys and so on. Then parents put the baby at the table and the baby can take anything on it. 

The things may show what the baby may be good at in the future. For example, if a baby takes a book, people will say he or she will be good at writing. If a baby takes a kitchen ware (厨具), people will say he or she will be a good cook. When a baby takes a cake or a toy, people will say he or she will know how to enjoy life more. 

Today, we have a "Zhuazhou" for my cousin. He takes a book from the table. My uncle is very happy and calls him "Wenhao". He puts much hope(希望) on the name.

 To remember 11 numbers is not {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. However, because of the smartphone, many of us are losing this {#blank#}2{#/blank#} . What's more, smartphones weaken our skills at giving directions, as well as killing face- to- face communications. Even when friends are having a meal together, it's {#blank#}3{#/blank#} for most to check their phones. 

 According to a report by Kleiner Perkins Caufield Byers, an American company, Chinese people {#blank#}4{#/blank#} about 170 minutes on their smartphones daily. 

 Many students are addicted(沉迷) to using smartphones. It does no good to {#blank#}5{#/blank#} study. Research by Japan's Education Ministry {#blank#}6{#/blank#} children who spent more than four hours a day on their phones perform much worse in school test than those who played with their phone s for 30 minutes. 

It's true that the smartphone has made our lives easier. But many also think they spend too much time on it, and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} is bad for their study or work. People are trying {#blank#}8{#/blank#} that. 

A new app called Forest was introduced this month. It lets {#blank#}9{#/blank#} plant a seed that grows into  a tree over the next 30 minutes. During the half hour, users cannot use their phones, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} the tree will die. 

A restaurant in Los Angeles, US, gives people a 5% discount if they don't check their phones during a meal. Owner Mark Gold said he hopes it gives people a way to enjoy their meal and {#blank#}11{#/blank#} talk with friends and family in person. 

One hundred years ago in 1924, Rabindranath Tagore made his first trip to China. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}（he） visit is still remembered by Chinese people today. Do you know this poet's story? Tagore was born on May 7, 1861, in India and {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（receive） his early education at home. He started writing poems  {#blank#}3{#/blank#}the age of eight. His first poems were published {#blank#}4{#/blank#} he was just sixteen.

Tagore was then sent to England to study law. However, he failed {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（complete） his studies.

He went back to West Bengal in 1880 and got married three years later. Then in 1901, he set up an international college .It offered many courses. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (unlucky) , between 1902 and 1907 ,Tagore lost his wife and two children. His {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (sad) is reflected in his later book of poems, Gitanjali. It {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(publish) in 1910 and made him famous around the world. Three years later he won the Nobel prize in literature. He was the {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (one) non-European to win the prize. 

During his life, Tagore visited more than thirty countries. Besides poems, he created many other works {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(include) some plays, short stories and more. He was also a good painter.

The most difficult thing about learning English is to remember new words. I study the words and remember them, but a week later I have forgotten most of them. When reading something in English, I always get into trouble when I come across a new word. There must be a better way to learn new words.
