With only one yuan, could you live in a city for one day? It may sound impossible.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

On April 10th, more than 60 students from a middle school took part in the One Yuan Metropolis Survival(一元城市生存). A charity organization(慈善组织) for teenagers held this activity.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} And it is going to four others, including Beijing.

In the activity, students had to live and deal with difficult tasks. To make money, many students looked for part-time jobs and saw how hard life was. A 14-year-old girl asked more than 10 restaurants for a job and finally got one. "{#blank#}3{#/blank#} But gradually, we got used to it," she said. After being a waiter for an hour, she got 25 yuan.

Living was hard, but finishing the tasks wasn't any easier. The students went to different places to finish tasks in a short time. The most amazing one was when they had to exchange things worth a thousand yuan with only a piece of paper in half an hour. "{#blank#}4{#/blank#} From a balloon to a cake to a bottle of yogurt...after almost 20 tries, we got an expensive ring," a student said. "We will give all of the money we have raised to poor schools in Tibet."

l will never {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (忘记)the first time left my home. I was 11 years old. And I was going tostay at the summer camp for a {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (月). When my {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (父母) first told me about the camp. I thought it was exciting. Therewere a {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (种类) of activities—swimming. Baseball and even horse riding. My mum {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (帮助) me with everything I needed.

My dad {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (开车) me to the camp. When we {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (到达), I saw a lot of kids, but l didn't know anyone. 1 began to feelterrible. They gave me a little card with my name on it. At last the time camewhen my mum and dad said, "Well, Maggie, goodbye. Don't {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (担心), and have a good time. We'll often call you."

I had a specialfeeling and wanted to cry. But just then {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (另一个) girl at my age came up to me and said, "Hi, are you Maggie? I'mJenny. Come on, let's go and see {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (马). "So off we went, and I had a great tine there.

Ghosts of our loved ones

Many people think things like ghosts and death are scary. But in fact, we just had a festival celebrating these things.

Every year, on the 15th day of the seventh month in the Chinese lunar calendar, we celebrate Zhongyuan Festival, or Ghost Festival. It is on August 30th this year. On this day, families light lanterns to help dead people find their way home. But at the same time, living people don't want to stay out at night during Ghost Festival. They believe ghosts may hurt them.

Ghost Festival and Tomb-Sweeping Day, or Qingming Festival are both holidays that honor the dead. During Ghost Festival, the spirits of all dead people are honored. But we only honor our dead family members at Qingming. People believe the spirits of the dead would come back to Earth during Ghost Festival, but not during Qingming.

In Chinese culture, death is a scary and heavy thing. People are mostly afraid of it. But in some other cultures, death is a less gloomy（阴郁的） thing. 

In the US, people remember the dead on Halloween. But they make it a fun festival. People wear scary clothes. Children do fun things, like trick-or-treating.

In Mexico, the Day of the Dead is a time for the living to connect with the dead. They make dolls of the dead and tell stories about them. There are also parties at night. Whether you like it or not, death is apart of life. Understanding death can help us cherish(珍惜) our time here and live best lives.

Fleming saw many soldiers die from infections (感染) in their wounds as he worked in a hospital during World War I. This made Fleming decide to find a way to help the body fight infections. 

In September 1928, Fleming left some glass dishes on a bench in his laboratory for two weeks. When he came back, he noticed something puzzling. Bacteria (细菌) were growing on all the glass dishes except one. On this dish mould (霉菌) had started to grow—the kind found on old bread. The mould seemed to be giving off something that stopped the bacteria from growing. Fleming called it "mould juice". He tried it on other bacteria, and it killed them, too. Fleming became wild with joy and named it penicillin. 

Unfortunately, Fleming's boss thought he was wasting his time and it was impossible to kill bacteria at that time. Fleming did a few more experiments with penicillin, and he also wrote about it so other scientists could learn about it. However, because no one seemed interested in his discovery, he forgot about penicillin and started to work on other things. 

In 1939, Ernest Chain, a scientist, and his boss, Howard Florey, were looking for medicines that could kill bacteria. They discovered Fleming's notes and decided to test penicillin. In 1940, they gave penicillin to some sick mice, who survived later. But those who didn't get it died. Florey declared: "It looks like a miracle!" By 1943, the final tests on humans were finished successfully and the world had its first antibiotic (抗生素) medicine.

One afternoon, my son Eric asked me, "Are all people the same even if (即使) they have skins (皮肤) of different colors?" It was a difficult question. I 1 for a minute and said, "Let's go to a 2 shop. I'll show you something."

At the shop, we bought some apples in different colors--red, green and yellow. After we 3 , I told Eric, "It's time to 4 your question." I put one apple of each color on the table. Eric watched them with a surprised(惊讶的) look on his 5 . "Eric, can you tell me which apple you like best?" Eric picked up the red apple 6 . Then I peeled (剥皮) all the apples and put them back on the table. "OK, Eric, now tell me which one you like best." He said, "I can't tell. They all look 7 now." I said, "Eat them and see which one is which." He ate and said, "I got it, Dad. People are like 8 . They are in different sizes and 9 . On the outside of the apples, some of them may not look as 10 as the others, but are the same inside."

Eric knew everything. I didn't need to say or do anything.

My name is Lucy. I had an experience of staying at home alone on Saturday afternoon two years ago. It was getting dark outside. However, there were still two hours before my1 finished watching the opera and returned home. I thought the opera was 2 , so I didn't go with them. After finishing my homework, I locked myself in my parents' bedroom and 3 the TV. My favourite cartoon was playing on TV.
