One day, Howard Kelly, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door in order to pay his way through school, found he had only one coin left, and he was hungry.

    He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he became very nervous when a lovely young woman opened the door. Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water.

    Young woman thought he looked hungry so she brought him a large glass of milk. He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe(欠) you?”

     “You don't owe me anything,” she replied, “We never accept payment for a kindness.” He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”

    Years later that young woman became very ill and was finally sent to the big city, where they called in specialists (专家）to study her rare disease. Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation (咨询). When he heard the name of the town she came from, he went to her room. He recognized her at once. He decided to do his best to save her life.

    After a long struggle, the battle was won. The woman thought it would take the rest of her life to pay for the final bill. But when she saw the bill, she read these words: “Paid in full with one glass of milk” (Signed by Dr. Howard Kelly).

    Films provide more than just entertainment．Watching foreign language films is a way to develop language skills．While watching a film，you are immersed（沉浸）in the language and can pick up new expressions that you might not find in a textbook．Some difficulties can arise when watching foreign language films-for example，unfamiliar colloquial language or strong regional accents．With this in mind，here are my tips to help you make progress in English learning while enjoying the films．

    Choose a film type that you enjoy.

    If you like action films，watch an action film-for example Indiana Jones．If you prefer comedies，watch a comedy-anything with Hugh Grant in always provides a laugh！It's simple enough，but if you choose something you enjoy watching in your native language，you're more likely to enjoy it in English．

    Choose something that you are familiar with.

    It's best to start off with something simple because in this way you have a higher chance of understanding the film．Disney films such as The Lion King，or the more recently released Tangled，are classic examples．Other cartoons such as Rango and The Lego Movie are also worth a watch．

    If you need to，use subtitles（字幕）．

    Subtitles are very helpful for beginners．using subtitles in your own language is the easiest choice，but for more advanced learners why not consider using English subtitles？This way，you can match the written subtitles to the words spoken on .screen．It helps you to develop your language further.

    If you ears are working well, you hear sounds all the time. You can't switch（关掉）your ears off, even when you are asleep.

Listening

    When you really want to listen to something, you tell brain to focus on that sound. If your ears are healthy and are both working well, they can turn down other sounds while you focus on what you want to hear. If one ear isn't working __________ the other, they can't do this as well. If you hearing cells（细胞）have been damaged by too much loud noise or music, what you want to hear can get mixed up and lost in the other sounds around. With healthy ears you can choose what you want to listen to, but you can't choose what you hear.

Understanding

    Your brain deals with the received sounds and tells you what they mean. Some people have problems understanding what they are hearing because their ears don't work well and they don't hear all the sounds. They brain does not get enough information to understand the messages or they may be mixed up.

Selective（选择的）hearing

    Lots of mums and dads think that kids have this “problem”. They think that you select what you are going to hear and what you can't hear! Many mums say that dads do this, too. In fact, this is something we may all do to try and make our lives a bit easier. Some children wrote what they liked to hear and what they didn't like to hear.

⑴I am 73 years old. I often watch TV in my free time. Of all the programs, I like the news best. Through the TV, I can learn what is happening in our country and in the world. At seven every evening, I always sit in front of the TV on time.  {#blank#}1{#/blank#}
