Camilla Chomp was a strange little girl. She liked to spend her time alone eating chocolate. Her parents were worried, so they tookall the chocolate away.

    Camilla left her house to look for some chocolate. She found a small house full of bottles. Among the bottles, a blue bottle caught Camilla's eyes. It was full of chocolate. In the bottle there was also a card with the words "Changetears(眼泪) into chocolate."

    Camilla was very excited.She ran out of the house with the bottle to look for someone crying. First, she met a little boy crying hard and collected his tears. The tears were quickly changed into chocolate. While Camillawas collecting the tears, she comforted the boy. Finally, the boy stopped crying and they had a good time together.

    Later, Camilla met a woman and an old man crying. The woman had broken some bowls. And the old man's dog had just died. Camilla collected their tears and made them happy again.

    Soon, Camilla knew that making people happy was much more important than finding chocolate. So she stopped collecting tears and began to help sad people. As a result, she had many friends and had a happy life.

    When he was small, Hill was a famous bad boy.

    At the age of 9, his father married his stepmother. At that time they lived poor in the countryside while his stepmother was from a wealthy family.

    His father introduced Hill to his stepmother as he said, “Dear, I hope you notice in the entire shire this is the worst boy, who has made me have no other way. Maybe before tomorrow morning he will throw a stone at you, or do a bad thing you will never imagine.”

    Praise will never be unnecessary, especially for children. A sincere (真诚的)praise may be better than 10, 000 bad words.

    When Mr. David retired（退休）, he bought a small house in a village near the sea. He liked it and hoped to live a quiet life in it. But to his surprise, many visitors came to see his house in summer holidays, for it was the most interesting building in the village. From morning to night, there were visitors outside the house. They kept looking into the rooms through the windows and many of them even went into the house. He decided to drive the visitors away. So he put a notice on the window. The notice said, "If you want to satisfy your curiosity（好奇心）, come in and look around. Price twenty dollars. "Mr. David was sure that the visitors would stop coming, but he was wrong. More and more visitors came and Mr. David had to spend every day showing them around his house. "I came here to retire, not to work as a guide（导游）, "he said angrily. In the end, he sold the house and moved away.

    Nowadays, lots of foreigners are learning Chinese. Like many of them, I 1 knew two words of Chinese ("Ni Hao" and "Xie Xie") when I first came to Beijing, China in 2009. As you can guess, my life was 2 for a while after I arrived. Simple tasks like ordering food or taking a taxi were quite stressful.

    I knew I had to learn more Chinese, so I 3 a Chinese class. My teacher was 4, although I didn't learn enough to have a real conversation. Later I studied on my own as well, but my progress was still slow. And I decided to 5.

    Around this time, I started playing in a band with a Chinese man who became one of my best friends in Beijing. He taught me a lot of 6 about music, such as "melody". He learned a lot of English from me in return, so it was a good way to 7 language and culture.

    I have learned enough Chinese to 8 many problems like booking train tickets. These days, there are more foreigners who are studying Chinese. I can 9 why it's an amazing language. Finally, I found that the best way to learn a 10 is to make friends with native speakers and spend time with them.

 When I was about five, like most children, I was curious(好奇的) to everything. Sitting in front of my crayons, I wanted to" discover" what was inside them. So I cut them in two. Disappointedly, I found nothing but more crayon inside of them. When I was a little older, I was interested in the inner parts of pens, televisions and so on. In fact, my childhood interest in the building blocks(构成要素) of things led me to work in engineering. 

I spent six years as part of the team that designed   the Shard — the 2nd highest building in Europe. After   having explored the big, I decided to turn to the small. I realized it was the seven key elements form the basis of the modern world: the spring, the pump, string, the nail, the wheel, the lens and the magnet. They have created and changed our technology, which have also had a big influence on our history, society, communication, transportation, arts and culture. For example, the speaker on my phone through which I could hear the voices depended on a magnet. Even as I thought about more larger objects — factories, cars, satellites and so on — again and again, I came back to the same seven key elements. 

 Look around yourself and ask questions about what you see: awaken that childhood curiosity. Hopefully, this will encourage you to explore the world of engineering, and is something which will lead you to form a better understanding of the building blocks of our world.
