Omar Vazquez grew up in poverty on Mexico's Yucatan peninsula. He watched his single mother struggle to put food on the table, and today the memory inspires him to help those in need. When an invasive (入侵的) seaweed called sargassum showed up on Mexico's Caribbean beaches, Omar looked past the matter of it all and saw an opportunity to help others.

Sargassum is not dangerous, but it has an unpleasant smell and can become so thick that it keeps people from entering the water. Mexico has experienced record-setting amounts of the seaweed in recent years, and it has made its way to Florida's beaches as well. Experts say there could be as much as 100 tons of sargassum blocking Mexican shorelines in 2023.

With tourism dollars at risk, officials and locals alike were eager to remove the seaweed, but only Omar saw its true potential. The professional gardener organized a beach cleanup that provided jobs for about 300 local families, but he knew there was more to do. Since people's attitude towards the seaweed reminded him of his own life experiences, he decided to become an agent (推动者) for change.

When sargassum started arriving, everyone was complaining. "I wanted to make something good out of something everyone saw as bad," Omar explained.

In 2018, Omar found a way to turn sargassum into building blocks that he calls Sargablock. He creates these blocks by mixing 40% sargassum with other materials like clay, then putting them in a block-forming machine and baking them in the sun for days. The end result is an organic, sustainable, and ecologically friendly building material that experts say could last for 120 years.

To date, Omar's company, Bluegreen Mexico, has used 700 tons of sargassum to build low-income housing for those in need. Omar said he would take on more projects, and donate more houses to single mothers like his own mom.

Ever since I entered YYHS, I have been struggling with the courses I take, in particular math. Although much effort has been put into math, I can't see any sign of improvement. Every day, I sit in the classroom, looking at the math teacher {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(困惑地). In a sense, I can {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(被称为) an idiot in learning math. Worse still, there are countless unknown fields {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(来探索) in my spare time. Last weekend, we took a math exam and scored only 78, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(这使我很受挫和绝望). YYHS, originally known as the Eighth School, {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(属于) the list of first provincial key schools in Hubei province. {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(被包围) talented students here, I feel highly pressured all the time. At times, an idea pops up into my mind that I may as well {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(摆脱) this renowned school. How I wish I could learn in a relaxed atmosphere, where I can have my learning schedule {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(调整) a little bit {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（如果可能）. When I shared my idea with my parents the other day, they urged me to {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(抛弃) all my troubles and {#blank#}11{#/blank#}(留心) in each class. Without their support, I had to stay and commit myself to my work. Whatever challenge comes my way, I will face it bravely. Should I fail in the future, I can {#blank#}12{#/blank#}(接管) my family business. After all, just as the saying goes, "All roads lead to Rome."

If you had to choose one word to describe Kevin,it might be "slow".He didn't learn his ABCs as fast as other kids.He never came first in the schoolyard races.However,his smile was bright and he showed great interest in everything.So when he discovered that Randy was putting together a boy's basketball team,Kevin immediately joined.

At practice,Kevin worked so hard that you'd have thought he was preparing for the NBA.And the whole team truly loved basketball.But just loving the game doesn't help you win.They lost every game that season by a very large margin(差距),except one...that night it snowed and the other team couldn't make it to the game.

At the end of the season,the boys unfortunately played against the first-place team.The game went pretty much as expected,and near the middle of the fourth quarter Kevin's team stood nearly 30 points behind.At that point,one of Kevin's teammates called time-out."Coach,this is our last game but Kevin has never made a basket.We should let him try," said the boy.With the game completely out of reach,the idea seemed reasonable.So every time Kevin's team had the ball,they would give it to Kevin.His first shot missed and he missed another shot again.This continued a few more times until the player from the other team grew wise.Instead of running off down the court,he threw the ball to Kevin who shot...and missed again.

Soon,all the players were circling Kevin,throwing the ball to him.The whole gymnasium thundered with the clapping,chanting,"Kevin!Kevin!" Finally,after amounts of tries,the ball went in.Kevin's arms shot high into the air and he shouted,"I won!I won!" The first-place team remained unbeaten,but on that evening,everyone left the game truly feeling like a winner.

A boy who has been climbing the equivalent（等量）of Mount Qomolangma in aid of a children's hospice（救济院）is about to reach his fundraising goal of £29,031. Six-year-old Oscar, from Lancaster, has climbed 10 of the UK's highest mountains to help Chorley's Derian House. He said he needed two more to match Mount Qomolangma's 29,031 feet height.

Oscar started his challenge on October 9, 2022, and Ingleborough in the Yorkshire Dales was the first mountain to be chosen. He said that the hardest climb so far had been Cairn Gorm in the Scottish Highlands because the snow was so deep.

Oscar took on the challenge in the hope of raising enough money to send 29 children with life-limiting illnesses on holiday. "I wanted to be the youngest person to climb Mount Qomolangma and I have climbed 10 out of 12 mountains. When I get older, I want to climb the real Mount Qomolangma," Oscar said.

"It was amazing what a child's dream can achieve. We're speechless and couldn't be prouder. We were grateful to everyone that supported us along Oscar's journey," Oscar's father Matt wrote on the social media.

Oscar and his family hoped to make their final climb on Ben Nevis in Scotland on May 29, 2023. The climb would mark not only the completion of Oscar's challenge, but also the 70th anniversary of the first successful ascent（攀登）of Mount Qomolangma by Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay.

"For every foot he climbed, our children would get a pound to achieve their dreams. The total £29,031 raised by Oscar would help support the work of the hospice, which provides end-of-life care to more than 400 children across the northwest of England," said Karen Edwards, a senior official of Derian House.

"The six-year-old was an unbelievable little boy who had truly gone to great heights. How many six-year-olds could say that they have climbed the height of Mount Qomolangma?" Karen added.

"It's over! Thank goodness!" school was 1 and I was tired. I 2 at the front of the school bus.

Janie, the driver, tries to 3 the uncomfortable atmosphere by striking the match of talks. I try to listen 4 , but usually I am too 5 thinking about my day. On this day, however, her talk was worth 6 .

"My father's ill ," she said to no one in particular (特别地). I could see worry in her 7 . I had never seen her like this before. She always meets students 8 a smile.

With a sudden change of interest, I asked, " what's wrong with him?"

With her eyes wet and her voice 9 , she answered, "Heart trouble." Her eyes lowered as she continued. "I've already 10 my mum, so I don't think I can stand losing him." I couldn't answer. My heart ached for her.

I sat on the 11 thinking of the great pain my own mother was thrown into when her father died. I saw how hard it was, and still is, for her. I wouldn't want to anyone to go through that.

Suddenly I realized Janie wasn't only a bus 12 , that was just her job. She had a whole world of family and cares 13 .

I suddenly 14 very selfish. I paid no attention to Janie because she was a bus driver. I had judged her by her job and brushed her off as unimportant.

I shouldn't have been so selfish and self-centered. 15 people is an art.

I was interested in volunteering at a hospital because both of my parents work in hospitals. I wanted to see what the 1 was after hearing them talk about it. To be more 2 , I wanted to work at the VA — a hospital in Palo Alto because the 3 of VA is "to serve those who served" and I really 4 this very idea.

To my greatest joy, I was 5 the VA program, and throughout this summer break I've spent around 110 hours 6 at VA Palo Alto in different departments. To be honest, I had never at all felt more welcomed and 7 in every department I went to. After some initial experiences, I 8 to work in the Office of Information Technology (OIT) since I am interested in computers, and I wanted to see how they are used in a hospital setting.

My overall experience of volunteering at VA can be 9 into the words of "eye-opening and 10 ." Throughout my whole life I have been 11 to health care from both my parents being physicians and my health problems, but I have never 12 been on the other side of the glass, so to speak. What I 13 most about my experience was the ability to see what it's like to help people. I want to 14 volunteering at VA because I believe there is no other experience that can be as 15 as working in a hospital that treats Veterans.
