If you want to be a better reader, what should you know about the speed of reading?

Some people read very quickly and others read very slowly. But which one is better?

The quick reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down to read instructions (说明书) carefully. The slow reader may be a good reader. But he may spend too much time reading a story for fun. So the reader who reads everything quickly or the one who reads everything slowly isn't really a good reader.

Knowing why you are reading or what you are reading can help you to know whether (是否) you need to read quickly or slowly. Some things should be read slowly. You must read these things slowly all the time to understand and remember everything important. Example are instructions for making or doing something. Also, math books, science and even some storybooks are full of important information（信息）. However, some things should be read quickly. Examples are picture-books for fun, letters from friends, and some quick news from newspapers.

In some of your reading, you must change（改变） your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast. You will need to read some pages quickly and then slow down and do more carefully reading when you come to important ideas. So, knowing when to change your reading speed is one important symbol of being a good reader.

Daisy forgot to set the alarm clock (闹钟) so she had to run to catch the bus. This made her feel tired and rushed when she started her science test. After she handed in her test paper, she was certain that the test had not gone well. With a heavy heart, she left the classroom.

That afternoon, Daisy left school to work part-time at Beckman's. After she finished her work, Mrs. Beckman called her into the office. "Daisy," she said, "you have been a great worker. But business has been slow; we have to let you go."

Feeling down, Daisy left the office. As she walked slowly towards her aunt's house, she tried to think about the new hairstyle her aunt had promised her. When she arrived, Daisy showed her aunt a picture of the style she wanted.

"Well, you're done. What do you think?" Her aunt asked about an hour later.

What Daisy saw in the mirror left her speechless. It was nothing like the picture! How could she possibly go to school again?

The next morning, putting her things in her locker, she ran into Ms. Wilson, her science teacher.

"I know, Ms. Wilson, I did very poorly on the test. It's just that I forgot…"

"What are you talking about? Daisy, you did a great job!" Ms. Wilson said. "What I wanted to ask you is if you would be interested in working a few days a week after school as a lab assistant (助手). I need some help organizing all the materials." Daisy happily accepted.

"Daisy!" she heard as the rest of the students began to enter the building. "Where did you get your hair done?" She was so excited about her test and new job that she had completely forgotten about her hair.

"Wow! That is so cool!" she was told. She couldn't believe her ears. Everyone loved her hair.

What a couple of days it had been! Walking home, she smiled as the radio of a passing car played the song "What a Difference a Day Makes".

The holiday is the season to be joyful. However, many people feel sad or worried during or after holidays. When such feeling is connected only with holidays and doesn't happen at other times of the year, it's often called holiday blues（忧郁）.

____This can be a result of money problems, extra activities, and stress around holidays. People can also have holiday blues for terrible relationships with family and being alone during the holidays. Much traffic jam around holidays can cause holiday blues, too.

Holiday blues can have you feeling like hiding instead of celebrating. They can also lead thinking patters（方式） that aren't helpful. For example, if you angrily shout at your kids, then you may think you're the worst mom. If you can't make cookies this year, you will think you're just not as nice as you used to be. If you make efforts to make money, you may feel you'll never be rich. So we shouldn't think little of holiday blues.

 There are some very simple and useful ways to help people to deal with holiday blues. Start new traditions to your family. Don't be too hard on yourself. Take some time to volunteer. Take some time to take a bike ride, a relaxing walk, etc. Don't eat too much food — overeating can make your body sick and uncomfortable.

But if you have unshakable sadness or terribly hate eating, you may need to see a doctor. Let him check your degree of sadness or worries. Talking to someone may also help you feel better. But at other times you require medical treatment. Thus, you can shake the blues off and get back to the things about your life you do enjoy.

Computer scientist Mary has an idea for a new robot to help her work with children. How should it look? The robot should have arms to be able to lift things. And if it is going to communicate with people, it will also need a face. Scientists believe that giving a robot a face can make it seem more friendly. Humans would also like to pay more attention to robots with faces. But what kind?

For Mary, she wants to make sure that her new robot doesn't look too much like a human. She wants people to just treat it as a machine-person. If it looks more like a human than a machine, she thinks users might find it a bit creepy and feel afraid. Mary also believes that robot faces don't need to look a lot like ours. Her research shows that we can enjoy communicating with robots whether or not they look like humans, because our brains are able to look for faces. Just put two circles on top of a robot's body, and we will see a face. 

Dave feels differently. He believes that although at first we might be afraid when seeing a robot with a lifelike face, we may soon get used to it. If robots are going to work closely with humans, they should look as much like us as possible. After all, faces are an important part of the way we communicate. 

To make his robots look as much like real people as possible, Dave invented a special skin( 皮肤)for their faces. With this skin, robots can show human-like expressions and appear to be angry, sad, happy or surprised. Dave's robots are also programmed to copy expressions. How? Just imagine his robot is looking at you. The cameras in its eyes send pictures of your face to its central computer!
