“How are you?” is a nice question. It's a friendly way that people in the USA greet each other. But “How are you” is also a very unusual question. It's a question that often doesn't need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” hopes to hear the answer “ Fine”, even if the person's friend isn't fine. The reason is that “How are you?” isn't really a question and “Fine” isn't really an answer. They are simply other ways of saying “Hello” or “Hi”.
Sometimes, people also don't say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person might think, “No, I disagree. I think you're wrong…” But it isn't very polite to disagree so strongly, so the other person might say “I'm not sure.” It's a nicer way to say that you don't agree with someone.
People also don't say exactly what they are thinking when they finish talking with other people. For example, may talks over the phone finish when one person says “I've to go now.” Often, the person who wants to hang up gives an excuse “Someone's at the door.” “Something is burning on the stove.” The excuses might be real, or not. Perhaps the person who wants to hang up simple doesn't want to talk any more, but it isn't polite to say that. The excuse is more polite, and it doesn't hurt the other person.
Whether they are greeting each other, talking about an idea, or finishing a talk, people don't say exactly that they are thinking. It's an important way that people try to be nice to each other, and it's part of the rule of the game of language.

The routes

For centuries,the Silk Road was the most important line of communication connecting modern day Xi'an with the Middle East and Europe,today one area in particular is associated most closely with the name of the Silk Road.This area is Xinjiang in Northwest China,through which two major routes of the Silk Road passed on the northern and southern side of the Taklamakan desert.

The name

The Silk Road got its name in the 19^th century when a German geographer identified it as the route through which the Romans got their silk from China.However,silk wasn't the only thing that passed along the Silk Road;anything that had buyers was traded along the road.Goods were traded from market to market passing through many hands before they reached their final destinations.

Buddhism

The Silk Road was not just the route through which goods were carried.It was also important for the exchange of ideas.Buddhism from India entered China along the Silk Road and had a huge influence on Chinese culture.Greek art styles were popular along the Silk Road and gave Buddhist statues in Northern India classical Western faces.These styles from Northerm India were also found in Xinjiang.

The people

One of China's famous monks,Xuan Zang,followed the Silk Road in the 6^th century to collect Buddhist scriptures from India.Around 600 years later,one of Europe's famous travellers,MarcoPolo,entered China along the Silk Road.Both Xuan Zang and Marco Polo left detailed records of their journeys along the Silk Road.

The Silk Road today

Today, the Xinjiang Autonomous Region remains an international crossroad where traders from surrounding countries,and tourists from all over the world regularly meet.Trade in precious stones,food,drinks,crafts,art,and of course,silk,contimues,too.

Near the North Pole(北极)there are only two seasons：winter and summer．In winter，nights are long．For more than two months you can't see the sun，even at noon．In summer，days are long．For more than two months the sun never sets and there is no night at a11．The temperature(温度)is very low near the North Pole．Even in summer the temperature is below 0℃．So people there wear warm clothes all year round．They make their clothing from the skins of animals．From the skins they also make coats，hats and even boots．
In the cold climate，plants cannot grow．So the people have to build their houses with skins，earth，stone or snow．When they go out to hunt something，they live in tents of skins．When they move，they take their tents with them．Sometimes，they build houses of snow．Now don't think that these houses must be cold．In fact，they are very warm and safe．The life near the North Pole is very interesting．

When you are about to do something brave, a cheerful wish of “Good luck!” from a friend can be helpful. But if you think you need lots of luck, what else might you do?
In the UK and US there are some strange traditions for bringing yourself a little more good luck. Some are hundreds of years old and some are much newer.
Have you heard the saying “When you wish upon a star”? If you are looking up at the sky on a clear night and you see a sudden flash of light, it is probably a shooting star! Seeing one doesn't happen very often. The saying goes that if you see one you have been very lucky, and so if you make a wish, it will come true.

The expression "shoo-in" comes from horse racing. It comes from the world "shoo". That is not the shoe we wear on our feet. It's another word, S-H-O-O. To shoo is an expression hundreds of years old that means to force an animal to move in a desired direction.
Many years ago dishonest riders sometimes agreed secretly to control their horses so that one chosen horse would win the race. but one of the riders would hold back their horses. The chosen rider would shoo his horse ahead of the others, and win the race.
The other riders would secretly bet large amounts of money that the chosen horse would win. The public soon learned about such about such race. They began to call the winners of such a race a "shoo-in".
These days, people use shoo into describe any athlete or competition that seems certain to win, even without cheating.
American runner Edewin Moses won more than hundred races before he ran the hurdle race in the 1984 Olympic Games. Everyone said Moses was a shoo-in, and that he could not lost. And they were right. He won the gold medal.
