A heavy rain hit a small village. The floods (洪水) started to rise. A priest (神父) was praying (祈祷) in a church (教堂). The flood was almost above his knees. A rescuer (救助者) shipped to the priest and said, “Godfather, come up or you will die.” The priest said, “No, I'm sure God will save me. You may leave for others.”

    After a while, water covered his shoulder, the priest had to move onto an altar (祭坛). This time a policeman came over in a yacht (游艇) and said, “Come up or you will die!” The priest said, “No, I have to keep my church. I believe God will save me. You just go and save other people.” A moment later, his church was flooded. The priest had to hold firmly (牢固地) the cross on the top of the church.

    A helicopter (直升机) was flying over him where a pilot put down a rope ladder and shouted, “Godfather, come up! This is your last chance! We don't want you to die!” But he said firmly, “No, I have to keep my church. I believe God will save me. You just go and save other people. God will be with me.” Great flood soon came over. The priest was killed.

    The priest went to Heaven (天堂) where he saw the God. He asked angrily, “God, I served you honestly, but why didn't you save me?” The God said, “Didn't I? The first time I gave you a ship and you refused. The second time I gave you a yacht you refused again. The third time I sent you a helicopter you still didn't accept. So I thought you wished to stay with me in a hurry.”

    In fact, the obstacles (障碍) in our life are because we are stubborn (顽固) and ignorant(无知).

    A couple of young men were fishing at a lake. Suddenly the policeman jumped out of the forest.

    At once, one of the men threw his rod (鱼竿) down and started running through the forest, and the policeman ran after him.

    After about half a mile, the man stopped and stooped (弯腰) over his hands on his legs to catch his breath. The policeman finally caught up to him, "Let me see your fishing license (证件), Boy!" the policeman said.

    The man pulled out his wallet and gave the policeman a fishing license.

    "Well, guy." said the policeman, "You must be about stupid as a box of rocks! You don't have to run from me if you have a fishing license."

    "Yes, Sir", replied the young man, "But my friend back there, well, doesn't have one."

One afternoon, my son Eric asked me, "Are all people the same even if (即使) they have skins (皮肤) of different colors?" It was a difficult question. I 1 for a minute and said, "Let's go to a 2 shop. I'll show you something."

At the shop, we bought some apples in different colors--red, green and yellow. After we 3 , I told Eric, "It's time to 4 your question." I put one apple of each color on the table. Eric watched them with a surprised(惊讶的) look on his 5 . "Eric, can you tell me which apple you like best?" Eric picked up the red apple 6 . Then I peeled (剥皮) all the apples and put them back on the table. "OK, Eric, now tell me which one you like best." He said, "I can't tell. They all look 7 now." I said, "Eat them and see which one is which." He ate and said, "I got it, Dad. People are like 8 . They are in different sizes and 9 . On the outside of the apples, some of them may not look as 10 as the others, but are the same inside."

Eric knew everything. I didn't need to say or do anything.

I quickly try to finish writing one last sentence but Miss Jones sees me. "Ellie Stevenson! The exam is over!"

"Please, Miss...another thirty seconds... five?"

"Humph!" she says and takes my paper. 

There is nothing that I can do now. I hate biology! I dream of being a singer, like Murphy. I want to study music at A level. 

"You can't study music!" said Dad when I told him at the start of the sixth grade, in September last year. "If you want a good career, you need to study science."

"He's right. The sciences are important, Ellie," agreed Skye. "I'm going to study chemistry, biology, physics and math." 

"Boring! Why don't you study French like me?" suggested Cassie. "Mr. Lake, the French teacher, is great!"

I never told anyone about my dream after that. 

Now here I am trying not to fall asleep as Miss Jones finishes collecting the answer papers after the biology exam. I'm really tired. I close my eyes. I only want to rest for a minute. But soon I'm not in the exam room...

I'm on stage in front of thousands of fans. My fans! They are shouting my name... I start to play the guitar and they all cheer... they sing the words to my latest hit...

"Ellie! Ellie!" Miss Jones's angry voice wakes me up. 

"Eh...? Sorry?"

"It's time to go home!" she says, shaking her head. 

I'm the only person left in the room. Everyone else has already gone. 

I was dreaming... again. 

I feel stupid as I pick up my bag and walk towards the exit. 

Outside, it's raining. It's spring but the sky is grey and miserable (令人难受的). It seems like it will rain forever and I haven't got an umbrella.

When I look into Murphy's eyes, I know that maybe my dream is just beginning...
