    The holiday season isn't about shopping and gifts.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} However, holiday travel can be more expensive than gifts. Fortunately, the following tips will help keep your travel spending under control.

    Plan ahead. The earlier you book your travel, from airfare to hotels, the easier it is to find good deals.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} Your best prices on airfare come when you book three weeks before the plane leaves for domestic(国内的) flights. For international flights, consider booking 30 days in advance. Many experts point out that you should book travel between one month and three months out for high-traffic holidays.

    Book your air travel on cheaper days. Traveling by air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays often costs less than on Fridays and Sundays. During the holidays, it's not just about a specific day of the week. You also need to consider the days surrounding the holiday but days immediately before and after a holiday can be expensive. One of the best ways to save is to plan your air travel on the day of the holiday.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Consider traveling overnight. Red-eye flights and overnight flights often cost less than those at more convenient times.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}  Traveling overnight can help you avoid a night in the hotel, as well as save your money on travel to your destination.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} You can't bring liquids with you on the airline, but you can bring sandwiches and other snacks. When you're on the road, you can buy food at local groceries to make your own meals, especially if you have access to(可使用) a microwave.

How to Make Friends

    Friendship is a very important human relationship and everyone needs good friends. Good friendship has many benefits. It offers companionship, improves self-worth and promotes (促进) good health. There are times in our lives such as when we have recently moved into a new town, or changed our jobs or schools. Such changes often leave us without a friend. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} But for many of us the process is difficult and requires courage. Below are some helpful suggestions on how to make and keep friends.

● Associate with (与……交往) others.

    The first step to making friends is associating with other people. You can go to public places to meet new people. Besides, you will need to make yourself known by becoming an active member of such places.

● Start a conversation.

    Starting a conversation is the second most important step in making new friends. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} You can always start the conversation. Being able to make small talk is a very useful skill in relating with other people.

●{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Choosing friends with common interests is important in building friendship as these interests would always bring you and your friend together. Hanging out (闲逛) will always be a pleasant experience.

● Let it grow.

    It is a good thing to stay in touch. However, try not to press your new friend with calls, messages or visits as this would likely wear him or her out and finally you may lose your friend.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} The best friendships are the ones that grow naturally.

● Enjoy your friendship.

    The best way to enjoy your friendship is to allow your friends to be themselves. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Try not to change them from who they are to what you want them to be. Become the kind of friend you will want your friend to be to you.

任务型阅读

    You may ride on your bicycle in a rush to get to school every morning.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} You may also watch taxis crawl their way through traffic jams.

    No matter where you are, all big cities around the world have traffic jams these days. But although they all have their problems, many cities also have a type of transport (交通) that has become a cultural icon (圣像).

    In London, to avoid the traffic above ground, people use the "underground",also called the"tube".{#blank#}2{#/blank#} It brings a lot of convenience to its own residents and visitors and it is the pride of many Londoners. With 12 lines and 275 stations across the city, the tube, is normally the quickest and easiest way of getting around London. In London, you are never far from a tube station.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}They serve as a quick and easy way of getting across Manhattan, where the subway doesn't take you everywhere. Stopping a cab is easy; just stick out your arm like you do in any city. But, with over 12,000 yellow cabs in the Big Apple, they also cause traffic jams.

    Since 1873 when the first cable car started public service, the slow and noisy vehicle has been a symbol of San Francisco. Although once damaged by a serious earthquake and challenged by cars, it is never caught in traffic jams and provides better views than the subway. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    But there are no such symbols in Los Angeles. If you visit you'd better rent a car. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}It can take hours to get across town by bus. The subway covers just a small part of the city center. The light rail line only runs between the Long Beach hotel area and the city center. That's why Angelenos love their private cars more than any other people in the world.

A. No wonder it's always the first choice for commuters and tourists there.

B. You may fight to get a bit of space on a bus or on the subway.

C. The city has the oldest and most complicated underground railway system in the world.

D. The city's public transportation is terrible.

E. At this time every day, bike rides will be the most reliable means of transportation.

F. New York is famous for its yellow cabs.

G. There will always be one for you to every corner, fast and no worry.

    What to Do When Someone Doesn't Like You

    When someone tells me, “I don't care if people like me,” they are showing me the emotional wall they use to block the hurt of rejection.

    As humans are social animals, all of us care if people like us. Based on the need for social connection, your reactions to rejection and negative judgment can range from minor hurt to breakouts of depression. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    The first step to handle a negative situation is to recognize your reaction. Ask yourself, “What am I feeling?”. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Any betrayal (背叛) or embarrassments in your heart? Identify what feeling has shown up in your body? So you can choose what to do next.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}When you sense yourself shutting down or feeling defensive, ask yourself what the person actually meant to do to you. Did they truly mean to offend you, or make fun of you? Your brain works very hard to keep you safe, so it will judge a situation as threatening if there is any possibility of social harm.

    When our brains sense a possible threat, we react as if we were personally attacked. Take a breath to relieve the stress, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Finally, if you believe the person doesn't like you, ask yourself if this matters. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}If not, what can you do to release your need to be liked by this person? And, what can you do to stay neutral and not return the dislike? The more you can come to accept others as who they are , the more you can move forward with your goals regardless if someone likes you or not.

A. If you can, look the person in their eyes.

B. Do you feel any fear or anger in your head?

C. Ask yourself what is true about the situation.

D. Often people do not realize the impact of their words.

E. Will the person's judgment of you impact your work or life?

F. The ability to let a show of dislike roll off your back is a learned skill.

G. This will ground you in the present and take you out of your trembling mind.

Making the Most of Life Experiences.

    If you ask anyone what the purpose of life is, you'll likely receive wildly different responses. The answer to this question is deeply personal because different things are important to us throughout the course of our lives.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    Finding ways to make the most of our experiences is a challenge we face every day. Here are some ways to make your experiences meaningful.

    Follow your dreams.

    The number one way to live a life free of regret is to follow your dreams. Passion will die without actions supporting them.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Every day take an action, no matter how small, to achieve your goals. Each day is a step forward and none of it is wasted.

    Make lots of mistakes.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Many of my strongest memories come from the times I've failed,and those lessons have stayed with me. Failure is beneficial to us. And time allows me to see the value of even the most painful situation.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Difficult and painful experiences shape our character but can also weigh us down. These prevent us from moving forward. So much of our progress in life relies on willpower and a healthy emotional stale. If you're under stress, your body and mind both require time to recover.{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    For me, life is about experiences. We all have to dream, work hard, and fail before we can achieve success. Maybe we'll discover along the way that the journey is more important than the destination.

A. Take care of yourself.

B. Improve your personality.

C. Making mistakes is the surest path to grow as a person.

D. It's best to rest, recover, and slowly build back up your strength.

E. Yet one thing stays with us no matter where we go: our experiences.

F. Though we try our best to make fewer mistakes, it is impossible to avoid them.

G. Though we can't choose the outcome of our actions, we can choose to keep pursuing(追求).
