                                                                          Section A (10 marks)

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information from the passage. Write NO MORE THAN THREE WORDS for each answer.

Not all print dictionaries are the same, as you will notice when you select one. To make a wise selection, you should know how to distinguish

among three kinds of print dictionaries: pocket, desk, and unabridged. You should also know the copyright date of your dictionary, and

 check is special features.

A pocket dictionary is small. Generally, it contains no more than 75000 entries, making it hardly to carry to class and efficient to use.

However, a pocket dictionary doesn't contain enough entries to be adequate for college reference homework. In addition, the information

about each word in a pocket dictionary is generally limited. A desk dictionary is medium sized, generally containing over 100,000 entries

as well as extra features. For college work, you should own a current desk dictionary. An unabridged dictionary is a complete dictionary.

Abridged dictionaries, such as pocket and desk dictionaries, are shortened. Because unabridged dictionaries contain nearly all English words,

they are large and heavy. They are often used by schools and libraries.

If the copyright date of your current dictionary shows that it was published five or more years ago, consider investing in a more recent

edition. English is a dynamic language that admits new words and recognizes changes in meaning, spelling, and usage of familiar words.

This is reflected in an up-to-date dictionary.

In selecting a dictionary, check the features it offers besides vocabulary definitions. Many editions contain signs, symbols and foreign words.

Some also contain CD-ROMs and access to special online features.

    Do you want to learn a new language?{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Do you need it for a practical reason,such as your job or your studies?Or perhaps you're interested in the literature,films or music of a different country.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Most people learn a language best by using a variety of methods. However, traditional classes are an ideal start for many people. They provide an environment where you can practice under the guidance of someone who's good at the language. We all lead busy lives and learning a language takes time.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}As a result, you should try to develop a routine. It doesn't matter if you haven't got a long time.Becoming fluent in a language will take years, but learning to get by takes a lot less.

Many people start learning a language and soon give up.“I'm too old,” they say.Yes,children do learn languages more quickly than adults.{#blank#}4{#/blank#}And learning is good for the health of your brain, too.I've also heard people worry about the mistakes they make when learning.Well, relax and laugh about your mistakes.I'm sure you're much less likely to make them again.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}But with some work and devotion, you'll make progress. And you'll be amazed by the positive reaction of some people when you say just a few words in their own language.Good luck!

Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in each blank with a proper sentence given in the box.

Each sentence can be used only once. Note that there are two more sentences than you need.

    Are Your Clothes Causing Pollution?

Very small pieces of plastic, called microfibers, are polluting rivers and oceans. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Clothes worn for outdoor activities and exercise are often made of artificial material, which is useful in keeping warm. But they contain very small plastic fibers, which may also be harming the environment when you wash them. When people wash these clothes, very small pieces go down the drain with the wash water.

Studies on microfibers in the environment

Pollution caused by plastic is not new, but recent studies have shown the effect of microfibers in the environment. Studies show very small microfibers are ending up in our waters, which may come from waste water treatment factories. A 2015 study found them in fish from California.

    Microfibers, effect on food supplies

Beyond the waterways, the researchers say microfibers may end up in soil and agricultural lands. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} This means there is much to be learned about microfibers and the environment. Some studies have shown that microfibers end up inside sea animals, like oysters. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Researchers say that the fibers tend not to move into the tissue of the fish, but it needs more study.

Steps to save or keep microfibers from the environment

Until more information becomes known, there are steps to take to reduce the amount of microfibers in the environment. People should use less of the artificial materials. If we already have those in our lives and we're using them, an important step would be washing them less. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} A bag is being designed in which to wash these clothes. It traps the microfibers in the bag and it may be available for purchase soon.

A. New technology may also help.

B. So if these microfiber s have been found in fish and seafood, are they safe to eat?

C. They can also move around the atmosphere.

D. Studies are conducted on how much of the microfibers is released

E. The source of these microfibers may surprise you: your clothes.

F. Washing machines keep microfibers from escaping with w ash water.

请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

Do you know the look of wonder and joy that children get on their face when they listen to someone reading them a story?Schools across the nation are bringing in volunteers to guide children in this very way. If you simply enjoy spending time with children, being a reading volunteer can be a great way to help support the upcoming generation of readers.

Reading volunteers work with elementary school age children to promote reading. They may read books to children, listen to children read aloud, or distribute books to school children. Reading volunteers promote the activity of reading, rather than focusing on teaching reading skills. They may read to a whole class of children, to a small group, or be assigned a child to read to one-on-one. During the time they spend with new readers, reading volunteers encourage them to learn to read.

Almost anyone who knows how to read can be a reading volunteer. High school students, college students, parents, grandparents, and police officers are just an example of the kinds of people who become reading volunteers. Being able to read and wanting to spend time inspiring children to read are the only skills needed to be a successful reading volunteer.

Several educational research studies show that children who are involved in programs with adult reading volunteers improve their school performance levels. For example, in 1998, researcher Sara Rimm-Kaufmann found that first graders involved in a program with an adult reading volunteer three times a week had better letter recognition and reading skills than similar first graders who hadn't been involved in such groups. In 2000, the Eugene Research Institute found that fifth graders who had been in "SMART", an adult volunteer literacy program, were 60% more likely to have grade-level scores in standardized reading tests. Moreover, a 2006 study by Brian Volkmann showed that children who were read to by adult volunteers had improved school attendance, which is a major predictor of high school graduation rates.

In addition, reading volunteers themselves can gain a lot of benefits that range from expanding their personal networks to adding valuable skills to their resumes. They also enjoy the special time they get to spend with young children. Many volunteers have heart-warming stories to share with the children they read to. The volunteers know that they are inspiring young children with a proved educational strategy. So, if you have time, energy, and skill to support children's literacy, it is a good idea to sign up to be a reading volunteer.

If you seek happiness, then you need to know what happiness is for you. I don't believe there is one universal definition of happiness. Happiness is a very subjective emotion, according to me. Put two people in identical situations: same amount of money, life experiences. etc. and you can be pretty sure that they both wouldn't feel equally happy or equally sad. I believe this is so because there are two kinds of happiness. There is one kind of happiness, which is kind of universal and then there is the other kind, which is very individual to each one of us. It is this kind of happiness that I find more interesting.

The second kind of happiness that I talk about comes from our expectations out of our lives, which vary from person to person. For example, a person who expects a lot out of his or her life may find that happiness is hard to find. They are constantly in search of these things in life, which always seem to elude (逃避) them. Those things may be money or fame or power or any of the other pursuits (追求) that humans have, but it would be likely that such people are less likely to be happy, if their goals are not met. In most cases, even after their goals are met, they don't find happiness, because they seek more— new goals, new wish lists, and it's a seemingly never- ending process for them!

On the other hand, a person who takes life as it comes along and makes the best of each day is more likely to be happy every day. They have no pressure or goals to occupy their minds and they can achieve happiness from the simple pleasures of everyday life, finding love, making time for the family and kids, seeing their kids grow, etc. Of course, that doesn't mean that you shouldn't have any expectations at all. You should keep those expectations reasonable and manageable.
