Stinky tofu is such a special dish in China, and it seems quite surprising that I can't recall my first encounter with it. But what I do remember is my father's reaction to it in his first encounter.

My father and my brother came to see me in Nanjing last year, and I showed them around the city. We were walking down the street when my father suddenly stopped, looked around with a slightly worried expression on his face, as if he was searching for the source of something unpleasant.

"What's that smell?" he asked in a puzzled tone.

I pointed to a food stall (摊位)and said, "That's what they call stinky tofu. It's really delicious! Do you want to have a try? "Without saying a word, my father left at an unusually quick pace, and didn't slow down until he was safely out of range of the smell。

His reaction is understandable. Indeed, the smell of stinky tofu can be a bit too much for someone who has never tried such dishes before. It is often said that stinky tofu is to China what Stilton cheese(斯提尔顿奶酪) is to England. Actually, stinky tofu wins great popularity in China and you can find it in many cities, but very often on the street stalls.

One man's meat is another man's poison. I stayed in Nanjing for many years and eventually developed a taste for stinky tofu. It is now one of my favourite street snacks. It takes years for my father to make a return trip. I wonder if memories of stinky tofu have something to do with that.

(1)、Why did the author's father suddenly stop while walking on the street?
A、He wanted to look at the map. B、He found someone was following him. C、He lost something important. D、He smelt something unpleasant.
(2)、What does the author think of his father's reaction to stinky tofu?
A、Strange B、Reasonable C、Unacceptable D、Crazy
(3)、What can we know from the passage?
A、The author's father likes the smell of stinky tofu. B、The author likes the smell of stinky tofu the first time he tried it. C、The author develops a taste for stinky tofu after many years in Nanjing. D、The author's brother likes the smell of stinky tofu.

I loved my aunt Suzy. She was such a kind old lady. I loved going to her house on holiday. She had been sick for the last few years and, though my job had taken me away across the town, I tried to visit her as much as possible. I helped with the shopping, the cooking and the cleaning and taking her pet cat Mazy to the vet.

Sad as her passing away was, what happened to Mazy was even more worrying. Because aunt Suzy had no children, there wasn't anyone who seemed to care for her beloved cat friend. I would have taken her in a short time, but my apartment doesn't allow pets. First, we talked with her neighbors. Mr. Jenkins, who was alone and lived across the street, wasn't interested. Joe and Sally who lived next door had a small child with serious skin allergies(过敏症). My aunt's best friend Molly who had lived just down the road was unable to take care of herself as she had serious health problems.

Second, we thought about our family members. My brother Bobby and his wife Jill were eliminated at once as they aren't cat people. My cousin in California was a bit interested, but we weren't sure about the trip as Mazy was nearly as old as my aunt (in cat years!). Finally, we came to the local humane society to see whether they would be able to help her find a new home. The problem was that most people and families only welcomed a smart little cat into their home, not a dull old one.

In the end, we had to put Mazy to sleep. I had spoken with the vet and realized it was possible for the best. It was so hard to lose aunt Suzy and then have nowhere for Mazy to live. A few months went by and I had gone to my aunt's house to clear out some of her belongings. I happened to see her mailman. Jerry and we started to talk about my aunt when he asked about Mazy. I told him that we had to put Mazy to sleep because we couldn't find a home for her. Jerry got really quiet. “I promised Suzy that if anything ever happened to her, I'd take care of Mazy”, he said sadly. “Suzy always said she'd told her lawyer the arrangement.”

Hearing this, my heart sank to my feet and I almost cried. The saddest part, I realized, was this all could have been avoided. I guess we were just so busy in those final months that we didn't think about it. We could have called my aunt's lawyer to take care of it in less than 10 minutes. I'll never forgive myself for not thinking of it sooner. And I'll never forgive myself for losing Mazy.

Brian was a funny student. He loved watching comedies(喜剧) best and hoped to become a comedy actor one day.

When he heard about the talent show to be held at this school, Brian decided to take part in. He had never acted on stage before, and he was very excited. But some students laughed at him. “You are not funny but silly,” Ken, one of his classmates, said to his face. “No one will like what you do,” another boy also said to him, loudly.

Brian couldn't understand why they were so unkind to him. For a moment, he thought about giving up the show. But he remembered how much his friends liked his jokes, and also his teachers said he was very funny. So he decided to prepare for the show.

Brian did a great job at the talent show. Everyone loved his performance, and he won the first prize! His teachers and friends were proud of him. Even so, Ken told Brian that he was not funny, and that he would never be successful. Brian didn't understand why Ken said so, but he realized that it had nothing to do with him. He confidently continued to work towards his goal.

As the years went on, Brian met more people like Ken. “You'll do a terrible job,” they said to him. Luckily, most people encouraged him and some helped him to become even funnier. He got a lot of opportunities to perform in movies. He was even invited to appear on television. His fans thanked him because his comedies made them feel good when they were unhappy.

Now Brian is a big comedy star! He is doing what he loves best. He never feels stressed like those unkind people, and he laughs all day long!

Fern loved Wilbur more than anything. She loved to stroke him, to feed him, to put him to bed. Every morning, as soon as she got up, she warmed his milk, tied his bib on, and held the bottle for him.  Every afternoon, when the school bus stopped in front of her house, she jumped out and ran to the kitchen to fix another bottle for him. She fed him again at suppertime, and again just before going to bed.  Mrs. Arable gave him a feeding around noontime each day, when Fern was away in school. Wilbur loved his milk, and he was never happier than when Fern was warming up a bottle for him. He would stand and gaze up at her with adoring eyes.

For the first few days of his life, Wilbur was allowed to live in a box near the stove in the kitchen. Then, when Mrs. Arable complained, he was moved to a bigger box in the woodshed. At two weeks of age, he was moved outdoors. It was apple-blossom time, and the days were getting warmer. Mr.  Arable fixed a small yard specially for Wilbur under an apple tree, and gave him a large wooden box full of straw, with a doorway cut in it so he could walk in and out as he pleased.

"Won't he be cold at night?" asked Fern.

"No," said her father.  "You watch and see what he does."

Carrying a bottle of milk, Fern sat down under the apple tree inside the yard. Wilbur ran to her and she held the bottle for him while he sucked. When he had finished the last drop, he grunted and walked sleepily into the box. Fern peered through the door. Wilbur was poking the straw with his snout. In a short time he had dug a tunnel in the straw. He crawled into the tunnel and disappeared from sight, completely covered with straw.

Fern was enchanted. It relieved her mind to know that her baby would sleep covered up, and would stay warm.

Chinese movie goers set a box office record for the eve of the weeklong National Day holiday on Monday, with takings(票房收入)more than twice the previous record, according to several industry trackers. The major blockbusters(大片)contributing to the box office record were three new releases--My People, My Country, The Captain and The Climbers--which all opened on Monday.

Industry analyst Wu Nian said more than 80 film companies invested in the three blockbusters, which would provide a substantial boost to the recently lackluster market.

My People, My Country, a 158-minute anthology that saw seven famous directors join hands, dominated the box office, according to Maoyan(猫眼).

Consisting of seven short stories set in historic moments to look back at New China's 70years of existence, the movie was codirected by Chen Kaige as well as 6 other directors--who have all directed domestic hits or international award winners.

Chen, who served as chief director, said China has seen a huge transformation in the past seven decades. As the painstaking efforts of several generations had contributed to the country's achievements, Chen said the team working on the movie had decided to use it to revisit milestone moments through ordinary people's eyes.

Another highly anticipated film, The Captain, earned 194 million yuan to occupy second place on the box office charts.

Starring actor Zhang Hanyu, the film is based on heroic Sichuan Airlines pilot Liu Chuanjian, who completed one of the most miraculous emergency landings in China's civil aviation history.

Also adapted from real events, The Climbers grossed 157 million yuan on Monday. With a stellar cast including Zhang Ziyi and Wu Jing, the film is about Chinese mountaineers' ascent to the summit of Mount Qomolangma, via its perilous north ridge in 1960 and 1975.Wu Jing said the film filled a gap in the market, with sports-themed titles quite rare in the world's second-largest movie market.

Aside from the three blockbusters, eight other films--covering a wide range of styles from animation to fantasy-will be released during the holiday ending on Oct 7.
