Most children like to watch cartoons on TV because of the funny characters and the bright colors. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}

Some people think it leaves nothing for children to imagine when they watch cartoons on TV. They can see the different characters, so they need not imagine the appearance of a character or any situation in the cartoon. But when reading a book, the child has to imagine what the different characters look like. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} So the imaginative power of the child improves. 

Almost every child is able to read books. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Watching cartoons will improve their language ability. As most of the cartoons are in English watching them will improve their English. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} In this way, their vocabulary will get improved. They will learn how to pronounce different words. Their spoken English will also get greatly improved. These are the advantages (好处) of watching cartoons. 

But there should be a limit (限制) to everything. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} However, you cannot keep children from watching TV completely. It will only do more harm than good.
 

People know animals do have feelings, but they are not sure if these feelings are correctly understood. In recent years, scientists have done research about the feelings of cows, frogs and pandas.  ▲  It says that humans can tell whether a chicken is happy or sad by listening to its calls.

The researchers put a bowl behind a door. Inside the bowl, sometimes, there was something chickens love to eat, such as rice or insects. Sometimes, there was nothing. When the chickens saw food behind the door, they seemed happy and produced fast and loud sounds, known as food calls. When there wasn't food, the chickens made low and long noises to express disappointment. The researchers recorded all these sounds and studied their waves.

Then the researchers chose 16 recordings of such chicken noises. Half were from the chickens seeing the food and half were from the chickens finding no food. The recordings were played to 194 volunteers. Sixty-nine percent of the volunteers correctly understood whether the chickens were feeling happy or not, and some of them even had no experience of taking care of chickens.

The result shows that humans have the natural ability to understand the feelings of chickens. Hopefully, this finding can bring about new technology to help with chicken-raising, a big industry in many countries. Some scientists are already working on a smart computer program that can identify chickens' feelings. This is good news for farmers who want to make the birds happier and healthier.

Family education plays a big role in one's life. Good parents will greatly influence their children. Our group wants to know what great values teenagers learn from their parents and how often they communicate with their parents. So a survey was made among 1，000 students in our school including the first，second and third students. Here are the diagrams showing the results. 

Family is the first classroom for teenagers，and parents are their first teachers. The character and habits that teenagers develop have a lot to do with their parents. Parents should pay attention to their words and acts because teenagers will follow parents' behavior. Parents should serve as role models for their teenage children. They should show positive behavior（积极行为） ，such as kindness，honesty，and respect，which their children can learn from them. By setting a good example，parents can help shape their children's character and habits in a positive way.

People used their given names when they were among family members. But in social life, they called each other by their courtesy names to show respect. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} If you were talking about yourself, or if your elders were talking about you, the given name would be used instead of the courtesy name. 

Men would get their courtesy names when they turned 20. It was a symbol of adulthood(成人). {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} For example, Mencius' name was Meng Ke (孟). His courtesy name was Ziyu (子舆). Both Ke and Ziyu mean "carriage(马车)". Zhuge Liang's given name was Liang, which means "bright". His courtesy name was Kongming, which means "very bright".

The Earth is the energetic planet that we call home. It was formed over 4.5 billion years ago. The Earth might seem like a rock ball, but it's actually made up of four different parts.

The inner core (核心) is at the centre of the Earth. It's a hard ball of hot metal, about 70 per cent the size of the Moon. The temperature of the inner core can be as high as 5,400℃ and it's the hottest part of the Earth. The outer core circles (环绕) the inner core. Unlike the inner core, it is a liquid (液体的) layer, made mostly of iron. It's almost as hot as the inner core.

The mantle (地幔) is a thick layer. It circles the outer core and is about 2,900 kilometres thick, making it the Earth's deepest part. The mantle is mostly made of rock, but it also includes some magma (岩浆). The magma melted (融化) under high heat and pressure. It finally comes out from volcanoes.

We live on Earth's crust (地壳), a layer of rock about 30 kilometres thick. That might seem thick, but it's actually very thin, considering the size of Earth. There are two types of crusts: the mainland crust, which carries land, and the oceanic crust, which carries water. The thinnest parts of the crust are under the oceans, and the thickest parts are under the land. The Earth's crust is divided into large plates. Scientists believe that these plates are moving all the time, which explains how the world looks.
