Sometimes it seems that time is flying. Perhaps it doesn't need to feel this way. Our experience of time can be possibly changed. By understanding the psychological(心理学的) processes behind our different experiences of time, we might be able to slow down time a little.

One basic law of psychological time is that time seems to slow down when we're exposed(接触) to new environments and experiences. The law is caused by the relationship between our experience of time and the amount of information our minds process. The more information our minds take in, the slower time seems to pass.

It follows, then, that we have different experiences of time in different situations. In some situations, our life is full of new experiences. Our minds process a lot of information and time seems to slow down. In other situations, we have fewer new experiences and the world around us becomes more and more familiar(熟悉的). We become insensitive to our experience, which means we process less information, and time seems to speed up.

How can we slow down time? Here are two suggestions.

Firstly, since we know that familiarity makes time pass faster, we can expose ourselves to as many new experiences as possible. We can give ourselves new challenges, meet new people, and expose our minds to new information, hobbies and skills. This will increase the amount of information our minds process and expand(增加) our experience of time.

Secondly, and perhaps most effectively, we can give our whole attention to an experience to what we are seeing, feeling, tasting, smelling or hearing. This means living through our sense rather than through our thoughts. For example, on the way home, focus your attention outside of yourself, instead of thinking about the problems you have to deal with. Look at the sky, or at the buildings you pass, traveling among them. This open attitude to your experiences helps take in more information and also has a time-expanding effect.

To a certain degree, we can understand and control our experience of time passing. It's possible for us to slow down time by expanding our experience to time.

(1)、According to the writer, we can expand our experience of time by______________.
A、by going to bed on time B、traveling to new places C、having dinner as usual D、printing the same materials
(2)、What can we learn from the passage?
A、Being familiar with the world around helps us get more information. B、Understanding psychological time makes life pass more quickly. C、We can take in more information by living through our senses. D、We should build a stronger relationship between time and us.
(3)、Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A、Slow Down Time B、Only Time Will Tell C、Race Against Time D、Time Will Not Come Twice

The lion dance, a form of traditional dance in China, can date back to the Three Kingdom Period (220—280). It was very popular during the Tang Dynasty (618—907). The lions looked powerful and a little scary. Chinese people believe that lions can drive away bad luck and bring good luck. Many also think that the animal is a symbol (象征) of China. That's why lots of people, including overseas Chinese, love this dance so much.

There are different lion dances in different places. It's called Xingshi in Guangdong. In 2006, Xingshi was added to China's list of national intangible cultural heritage (国家级非物质文化遗产).

Wang Rentao has been performing the lion dance for 28 years. He is now head of a lion dance team in Guangdong. Last year, the team took part in the celebration of the 74th birthday of New China at Tian'anmen Square. It is famous for dancing on quincuncial piles (梅花桩), one of the most difficult lion dance skills. Dancers jump from one pile to another at a height of about 2.5 meters. The piles are l.8 meters away from each other. "The training is really hard. All dancers can play Kung Fu. Even with that, they may fall from the pile and get hurt," Wang said. "It can take many years to learn the skill. But that's also the amazing part of lion dance, the part that makes it valuable heritage."

Now students can learn lion dance in school. This helps students know more about the rich cultural traditions of China and feel proud of their heritage.

If you want to be a better reader, what should you know about the speed of reading? Some people read very quickly and others read very slowly. But which one is better? The quick reader may be a good reader when he reads a storybook for fun. But he may not be able to slow down to read instructions(说明书) carefully. The slow reader may be a good reader. But he may spend too much time reading a story for fun. So the reader who reads everything quickly or the one who reads everything slowly isn't really a good reader. Knowing why you are reading or what you are reading can help you to know whether(是否)you need to read quickly or slowly. Some things should be read slowly. You must read these things slowly all the time to understand and remember everything important. Examples(例子)are instructions for making or doing something. Also, math books, science and even some storybooks are full of important information. However, some things should be read quickly. Examples are picture-books for enjoyment, letters from friends , and some quick news from newspapers.

In some of your reading, you must change your speed from fast to slow and slow to fast. You will need to read some pages quickly and then slow down and do more carefully reading when you come to important ideas. So, knowing when to change your reading speed is one important symbol of being a good reader.

"Why don't you ever listen?" "You just don't understand me!" "You' re of no help at all!" Sound familiar? When you're having a difficult conversation with your parents or friends, accusatory words like those can stop a discussion. As soon as one feels attacked, the defensive(防御的)walls come up, and real communication becomes all but impossible. We focus on the other person's behavior first, without spending time thinking about and telling why we're feeling hurt. Here lie the differences between "I" and "you" statements.

An "I- statement" is a sentence beginning with the word "I" that tells another person how you are feeling in a clear way. For example, you might say, "I feel. . . " or "I become nervous when…" I- statements are a powerful tool to help you express your feelings to someone else without blaming(责怪)others. "You- statements, " such as those listed above, are statements that begin with the word "you", pointing out what other people have done wrong. These statements often mean that the listener is responsible for something.

Why are I- statements important? When you start a conversation by talking about the other person's actions, you're sending the message that they're the problem. For most people, this immediately leads to them becoming defensive and trying to throw blame back onto you. However, starting a sentence with 'I' helps us talk about difficult feelings and how the problem is affecting us, and stops other people feeling blamed. This can be seen in the case when you feel left out. Instead of saying "You always leave me out", you can say "I feel hurt when I'm not invited because it feels like I'm not welcome". With this I- statement, you're being honest about your feelings, but you're not presenting them as something the other person did to you. As a result, the listener will experience this as more friendly, opening the possibility of further conversation and hope for a solution.

It's a simple change, but by being a little more careful of how you express yourself, you may find people are more likely to positively listen to you and understand more about what you are trying to say.

A group of US high school students has changed an empty lot(一块空地) into a place of hope. The students go to Buchtel High School in Akron, Ohio. The empty lot was full of grass in the past. They wanted it to become a space that could be better for the mental(心理的) health of people living nearby.

After weeks of hard working, now the lot is a different place. There is a wood walkway leading to a purple bench(长椅). A few beautiful plants are already in the ground. There is also a hopscotch(跳房子游戏) board painted bright blue. On a back fence, you can see a wall painting with words like"Love" and"Peace" and the students' handprints on it.

The students painted the bench purple because it is a relaxing color. They think kids can go there to sit together, make friends and stay out of difficulties.

The hopscotch board was for a group of eight to ten school-age kids who live nearby. The students heard nowhere to play.

"The lot gives the people nearby a little hope and a little beauty, " said Lyle Jenkins, a member of the Neighborhood Network. "A lot of people love the place and have great hopes for things getting better. "
