My friend Joan is a nurse at the People's Hospital. She worked a year ago. She is a short beautiful girl with big eyes. Joan finds the work interesting, and the hours are not very long. Every day she works in a ward(病房)from eight to twelve. She brings the patients medicine, answers their telephones, and tries to be kind to everyone. She likes people even when they are not happy. In the afternoon. Joan has a rest. Then four days a week she goes to classes. She is learning first aid(急救)and Chinese. She is not good at Chinese, but she is good at first aid work. She is a good nurse.

Mother's Day was coming. Sally wanted to buy her mother some{#blank#}1{#/blank#} （礼物）. Sally decided to choose one that was cheap and useful because she was still a student.

I love reading. I spend over seven hours a week reading different kinds of books.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}I read a lot at the weekend. 

I am interested in story books. I enjoy reading the books of Robert Louis Stevenson because I find them really interesting. For example, Treasure Island tells the story of a young boy who sailed (航行) the sea to look for the hidden treasure.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} His story gave me a lot of confidence. After reading the book, I am not as shy as before and I am willing to try new things. I also want to travel and have exciting experiences in the future. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Maybe I can become a writer when I grow up. 

I get my books from Sunshine Library- it is just on the other side of my home. My friends give me lots of advice on books. We often meet together and talk about what to read.

Hi, boys and girls! My name is Eric Brown. I'm 12 years old. I go to No. 10 Middle School. I like English and my English teacher's name is Tom Green. He is 28 years old. He likes dogs and he has a dog. His dog's name is Max. Max is 8 years old. It is a black dog and it is big.

 Every day, Max comes to our school with Mr Green. And Max likes it. Max doesn't go to our classroom(教室). When we are in class, Max is in Mr Green's office(办公室). Max knows that it's time for us to study. After class, all of us go to Mr Green's office and meet Max. We say"Hello" to it and play with it. We are happy to be with it. Max brings joy to our school. We love it.

A man was1 because he tried hard but always failed. He went to the 2 and met a wise hermit(隐士). The man asked, "Why should I keep trying?"

"Look," the hermit said, pointing towards3 plants. "Do you see that fern(蕨) and bamboo there?"

"Yes," the man nodded.

"When I planted the fern and the bamboo seeds, I took very good care of them. Within a short period of time the fern 4 grew from the earth," the hermit continued. "But even though the bamboo seed was cared for years, there was no sign of 5 . But I did not give up on the bamboo seed and continued to water and take care of it. By the fifth year,a very small sprout(芽) came out from the earth. And within six months, the tree grew 6 tall. It was as tall as a seven-storey building."

"Did the bamboo stay still for four years and then grow a lot in the fifth?" asked the hermit. The man didn' t know what to say.

"It's simple," said the hermit. "It was making 7 roots underground. These roots helped it grow big in the fifth year and keep growing."

"Did you know that all the times you had been struggling(挣扎), you were growing strong 8 ?" said the hermit.
