    Most people who travel to another country to work or study for a significant period of time go through an adjustment period to the new culture. The amount of disorientation (迷惘) one feels in the new situation depends on one's own background and experiences.

    Culture shock is the sudden loss of the familiar, which leads to a sense of isolation (孤单) and less self-importance.  Later, you may feel that the differences between your home country and those countries you are visiting are huge and frustrating.

    The effects of culture shock range from mild uneasiness to acute unhappiness. To reduce such effects, you may follow these tips.

    Be prepared. Be aware that it exists and that it will probably affect you in one way or another.

    Know yourself.  Your responses to situations and people in the new culture will make more sense if you have a clear idea of what is important to you personally.

    Be calm and accepting. Understand that this is a learning process and that you will benefit from it.

    Be positive. Sometimes with a change of perspective, frustrating circumstances can be humorous and interesting.

    Set goals and stay busy. Don't sit around being sad and critical. Be adventurous, make plans and try new things.

    Avoid isolation. Don't keep yourself separate from people of the same cultural background. Don't complain about your experience.  They can offer you good advice and comfort.

     Hold on to your own personal sense of humor, which will help you deal with possibly frustrating and confusing situations. Often the first sign of recovery from culture shock is the reappearance of one's sense of humor.

A. Keep a sense of humor.

B. Try not to be overly critical.

C. Try to find people who have gone through this experience.

D. Clarify your own values and examine your own assumptions.

E. Sometimes changing to a new culture has an immediate effect.

F. Expect to suffer from culture shock when you return to your home culture.

G. When you first arrive in a new culture, you feel a sense of excitement and expectation.

Here are some tips on listening. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}.

  Relax yourself

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}. You need to relax. This will help you with your listening.

  Listen carefully to the first sentence

  The first sentence tells a lot about the whole passage. For example, if, at the beginning, you hear “Many shops in many parts of China have decided to take away all kinds of Japanese goods off their shelves, but some people say it's not a good idea. Our reporter says……”, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}.

  Think when you're listening

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}. For example, you can think of the following questions:What happened? When,where and how? What was the result and what did the speaker want to tell us? In this way, you may understand the passage better.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}

  It's important for you to remember some important facts. For example, if the passage is a science report, you should try to remember its findings, and how the scient ists got their results. This is also helpful to your listening.

A. Listen to important facts.

   B. Pay attention to key words.

   C. Maybe they can help you in one way or another.

Ways to sleep smarter

    Studies show that poor sleep influences people to make good decisions, concentrate on tasks or even manage a friendly mood(情绪) at work. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Today we've got our top favorite sleep tips and facts.

Set a regular bedtime

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#}Choose a time when you normally feel tired. Try not to break this routine(惯例) on weekends when you will probably stay up late. If you want to change your bedtime, make the change gradually, such as 15 minutes earlier or later each day.

Eat the right food

    Some foods are more helpful to a better night's sleep than others.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Others like bananas, potatoes, and whole-wheat bread are also helpful.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Exercising provides lots of good health benefits(好处). A good night's sleep is one of them. But make sure you exercise in the morning or afternoon. The National Sleep Foundation reports that exercise in the morning or afternoon can help deepen sleep. However, those who worked out in the evening hours saw little or no improvement in their sleep.

Reduce(减少) screen time before bed

C. Try to solve problems in your sleep.

    Getting your children to study can be a little like getting them to eat their vegetables. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Make a study time and have it at the same time every day. This will help your kids to learn to schedule their day and will give them a sense of control over how they spend their time.

    Allow them to study in blocks of time,such as for half an hour with a five-minute break in the middle. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Ideal(理想的) study times are after dinner or right after school before dinner.

    Never allow your children to study in front of the television,as that will encourage passive activity. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} You'll also need to help your kids find the right place to study. After you've set up a good study time for little learners,set up a good place where they can get those creative juices flowing. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Make sure there is a table or a desk and a comfortable chair.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} This includes helping them out with their homework sometimes and being there for them with the answers to any questions. The input you give your children during study periods will help form a bond and help make studying enjoyable.

A.Pick a place where your children can study properly.B.Hold them to the schedule they create for themselves.

C.Finally,spend time with your kids when they're studying.

D.Keep the atmosphere light and offer lots of encouragement,too.

E.Instead,use TV as a treat or a reward when the homework is completed.

    If you are already making the time to exercise, it is good indeed! With such busy lives, it can be hard to try and find the time to work out. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Working out in the morning provides additional benefits beyond being physically fit.

    Your productivity is improved. Exercising makes you more awake and ready to handle whatever is ahead of you for the day. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

    Your metabolism (新陈代谢) gets a head start. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}If you work out in the mornings, then you will be getting the calorie (卡路里) burning benefits for the whole day, not in your sleep.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Studies found that people who woke up early for exercise slept better than those who exercised in the evening. Exercise energizes you, so it is more difficult to relax and have a peaceful sleep when you are very excited.

    Stress occurs when you feel that demands placed on you — such as work, school or relationships — are beyond your ability. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} However, untreated long-term stress can result in serious health conditions including anxiety, insomnia, muscle pain, high blood pressure and a weakened immune system. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Everyone is different, and so are the ways they choose to manage their stress. Some people prefer pursuing hobbies such as gardening, playing music and creating art, while others find relief in more solitary (独自的) activities: meditation, yoga and walking. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Do some exercise. The research keeps growing — exercise benefits your mind just as well as your body. We keep hearing about the long-term benefits of a regular exercise routine. But even a 20-minute walk, run, swim or dance session in the midst of a stressful time can give an immediate effect that can last for several hours.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} It may seem difficult to get away from a big work project, a crying baby or a growing credit card bill. But when you give yourself permission to step away from it, you let yourself have time to do something else, which can help you have a new perspective or practice techniques to feel less overwhelmed. It's important not to avoid your stress (those bills have to be paid sometime), but even just 20 minutes to take care of yourself is helpful.

    Smile and laugh. Our brains are interconnected with our emotions and facial expressions. When people are stressed, they often hold a lot of the stress in their face. So laughs or smiles can help relieve some of that tension and improve the situation.

    Try meditation. Meditation and mindful prayer help the mind and body to relax and focus. Mindfulness can help people see new perspectives, develop self-compassion and forgiveness. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Much like exercise, research has shown that even meditating briefly can bring immediate benefits.

A. Take a break from the stressor.

B. Get some social support from whatever sources you can access.

C. Too much stress can affect body systems and cause mental problems.

D. Here are four healthy techniques that may help reduce stress in the short- and long-term.

E. But by finding positive, healthy ways, many of these negative health consequences can be reduced.

F. When practicing mindfulness, people can release emotions contributing to the body physical stress.

G. Some stress can be beneficial at times, producing a boost that helps people get through tough situations.

    Researchers define self-control or self-discipline as "ability to control or change one's inner responses". {#blank#}1{#/blank#} However, some people think that as an immediate consequence of leading lives of constant self-control, they aren't likely to gain a lot of pleasure from life.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} To start, 414 adults completed on online survey. In the survey, they rated their self-control by indicating how much they agreed with 14 statements, such as "I indeed do certain things that are bad for me, if they are fun."

    In their study, 205 adults were given smart phones and required to report their emotions at random moments throughout the week. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} If so, they had to report how hard they tried to resist them, and whether they eventually ended up acting on them.

    The researchers found that the more self-control people had,the more satisfied they were with their lives in the long run. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} In fact, such people's increased happiness to a large extent accounted for the increased life satisfaction.

    These researchers also figured out that people high in self-control are simply less likely to find themselves in situations where that's even an issue. They don't waste time fighting inner battles over whether or not to eat a second piece of cake. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} And that, it would seem, makes them happier……even if occasionally a little bit sad.

A. In a word, they are not bothered about such little desires.

B. Researchers checked these general ideas through a survey and study.

C. It is generally believed that in the long run self-control can make people happier.

D. Meanwhile, they were also asked to report whether they were experiencing any desires.

E. However, people with more self-control were also more likely to be happy in the short run.

F. But they are still uncertain why some people are more able to control their inner responses.

G. Most adults reported they failed to control their desire to play video games before an exam.
