Small Talk Might Get You Big Rewards

In many culture, small talk is a big deal. Although it may seem like a pointless conversation to pass the time or avoid awkward silence, it is actually very important for communicating and bonding with others.

According to US inspirational speaker Melissa Wadsworth, "Small talk is about tapping into possibility." Having good small talk skills is the best way to meet new people, which can lead to friendships, jobs, or other goals.

If small talk is so important, how do you do it? What's the best way to break the ice and start talking to people? Well, some of the most common topics include the weather, hobbies, work, family and travel. It's easy for people to talk about them.

For example, you can talk to your schoolmates about your classes or that teacher who drives everyone crazy. If you're lucky, you might have a friend introducing you to others firstly to help you start a conversation.

Sometimes, it may seem a bit difficult to start a conversation with someone you don't know. That's OK! Wadsworth has the best advice for this: "approach the conversation excited about the friendship, the good laugh, the fascinating story, the job opportunity, the date, the joy or the sense-of-belonging potential inherent (内在的) in this shared experience."

Small talk might just be the first step to something much bigger.

A. Everyone has this problem sometimes.

B. Another way to start small talk is to comment on your surroundings.

C. These topics are great for small talk because they are valuable.

D. Small talk can also be used for striking up a conversation.

E. Not only that, small talk is shown to boost brainpower by encouraging empathy, making you consider what another person feels or thinks.

F. Nobody would doubt the values of small talk.

G. If you're at a party, you might comment on the snacks, music, or the number of people there of video games.

Lazy people will never achieve anything in life. However, laziness can be defeated once a few changes have been made in your mind.

{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Many people lack sleep constantly, since they stay up too late and get up too early to prepare for work. These people have little motivation once they arrive home. Laziness works hand in hand with a lack of motivation and a tendency to put off things. By adjusting yow sleep schedule to provide a few more hours of meaningful rest, you can fight laziness throughout the day.

    Another way to fight laziness is to change your mind from passive to active. Some people treat their lives as if they were pushed from project to project. Others take a more proactive approach, viewing each project or task as a challenge they must overcome alone. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Some people fight laziness by removing the temptations that surround them. A television in the living room may provide entertainment, but watching too much TV often promotes laziness {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Complete a certain number of chores and reward yourself with a good dinner or a film.

Laziness can also be a lasting problem at home. Couples and children may all have different energy levels, but laziness can be spread if not dealt with quickly. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Be the first to collect and wash dishes after a meal. Others in the home may eventually follow your example and perform their own chores. It is difficult to practice laziness when you are surrounded by motivated people.

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Enough exercise and a balanced diet can help you to develop a healthy lifestyle, thus enabling you to have more energy and help boost your mood.

A. Knowing how to fight laziness is important.

B. Om way to fight laziness is to get enough sleep.

C. Finally, taking exercise regularly can help you fight laziness.

D. With strong determination, you will be able to achieve your goal.

E. Laziness sets in when you no longer feel in charge of your own life.

F. Create a reward system for yourself, just as parents do for the children.

G. To fight household laziness, set an example.

Just like other vitamins and minerals, vitamin D plays a key role in many important body functions. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Not getting enough vitamin D can lead to weak bones, muscle weakness, and even cancer. Besides getting 10 to 15 minutes of sun exposure each day, consider including the following foods into your meal plan to help your vitamin D intake.

    Dairy products

{#blank#}2{#/blank#}Cow milk provides your body with about 50% of your vitamin D daily requirements. Apart from milk, consider having cheese, butter, yogurt, and buttermilk. Look for low-fat versions if you are on a diet.

    Eggs

Eggs are a superfood. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}They contain lots of protein, vitamin A, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, calcium and vitamin D. One egg provides your body with 11% of your daily recommended value of vitamin D. Isn't it a reason for having some eggs for breakfast or lunch?

    Caviar(鱼子酱).

Caviar contains vitamin B12, vitamin B6, vitamin D, vitamin A, calcium, iron, and protein. If you are a big caviar fan, why not make it a part of your weekly meal plan? There are many ways to eat caviar. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}At the same time, avoid buying fake caviar.

Lacking vitamin D is a big problem these days since we tend to spend more time in the offices during the day. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Include these three foods in your meal plan to make sure your vitamin D intake is not low.

A. Eat your meals with enough vitamins.

B. But make sure you do not boil or bake it.

C. Cow's milk is an excellent provider of vitamin D.

D. That is the main reason why we lack vitamins.

E. This is because they contain so many vitamins and minerals.

F. Whenever possible, try to walk outdoors to get your vitamin D.

G. We need to meet our vitamin D needs to avoid serious health issues.

Perhaps you've heard the old saying “curiosity killed the cat.” It's a phrase that's often used to warn people—especially children—not to ask too many questions. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}In fact, research has shown that curiosity is just as important as intelligence in determining how well students do in school.

Curiosity can also lead us to make unexpected discoveries, bring excitement into our lives, and open up new possibilities. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}For example, one day in 1831, Michael Faraday was playing around with a coil(线圈) and a magnet(磁铁) when he suddenly saw how he could produce an electrical current. At first, it wasn't clear what use this would have, but it actually made electricity available for use in technology, and so changed the world.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#}On one level, this is because technology has become so advanced that many of us are unable to think too deeply about how exactly things work anymore. While it may be possible for a curious teenager to take a toaster apart and get some sense of how it works, how much do you understand about what happens when you type a website address into a browser? Where does your grasp of technology end and the magic begin for you?

In addition to this, there's the fact that we all now connect so deeply with technology, particularly with our phones. The more we stare at our screens, the less we talk to other people directly. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}Then we feel we know enough about a person not to need to engage further with them.

The final—and perhaps most worrying—way in which technology stops us from asking more has to do with algorithms, the processes followed by computers. As we increasingly get our news via social media, algorithms find out what we like and push more of the same back to us. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}Perhaps the real key to developing curiosity in the 21st century, then, is to rely less on the tech tools of our age.

A. It is still not known why learning gives us such pleasure.

B. We are always encouraged to challenge our pre-existing beliefs.

C. Yet it's widely agreed that curiosity actually makes learning more effective.

D. All too often we accept the images of people that social media provides us with.

E. However, curiosity is currently under the biggest threat, coming from technology.

F. In science, basic curiosity-driven research can have unexpected important benefits.

G. That means we end up inside our own little bubbles, no longer coming across new ideas.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. Dress right

B. Keep warm.

C. Don't go too fast, too soon.

D. Start and finish in the same way.

E. Don't wait to drink water until you feel thirsty.

F. Head out into the wind and come home with it at your back.

G. On really cold days, wear a mask or scarf over your mouth to protect your face.

It is not as simple as opening the door and hitting the track in winter. There are a few things you can do to ensure you are getting the most out of your run, and, importantly, not doing more harm than good.

    Warm up, cool down

{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Your muscles need some time to warm up when it's cold  so take it easy when you set off and do a few stretches (伸展) once you're finished.

    Drink water

You might not feel hot, but that's because sweat evaporates (蒸发) more quickly into the chilly, dry air. So be sure to drink water before, during and after cold-weather workouts. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} A belt bottle conveniently attaches to your waist so you don't have to carry it and can have a drink whenever you feel like it.

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Running in cotton is a bad idea. Wear thin, breathable layers of synthetic (合成的) clothing that help protect you from the wind and snow, but still let out heat and moisture (水分).Thirty percent of your body heat escapes through your hands and forty percent through your head. Wear a hat, or beanie (无边小便帽), and gloves so your circulatory system can distribute warm blood to the rest of your body. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}

    Run into the wind

{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Obviously, it will be an easier passage home with some extra help from Mother Nature. But, more importantly, you won't have the wind in your face for the second half of your run, when you are more likely to be sweating and catch a chill.

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。

A. Organize your materials.

B. Start with difficult material first.

C. Your room may be an ideal place for studying.

D. This will help you quickly get into the state of study.

E. Schedule an hour or two for studying during those times each day.

F. However, many students find their former study habits are not suitable for college.

G. You can also use apps to stop distracting websites like Facebook while you're studying.

Having good study habits is key to success in college. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} To begin making the change, you need to get organized to study.

    Create a fixed study space. Find a quiet space in your room or somewhere on campus where you can focus. Studying in the same place every day makes your brain combine a certain environment with work. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Find a regular time for studying. If you study at the same time each day, your brain will be prepared for learning when you sit down. Review your schedule and see when you have free time. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} You can study during gaps between classes or in the evening after your classes are done for the day.

{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Make sure you have everything you need to study at your study space. If you're studying in a place in your home, keep things like your books, pencils, pens, and paper in that area. If you go out to study, you can take a book bag and keep all your studying materials stored there.

Avoid distractions (干扰). When you prepare your study space, it's important to keep it away from distractions. Remove any technologies that will take your mind off your work, like your iPad. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} Besides, keep other distracting materials such as outside reading, away from your study area.
