Vienna (维也纳) is a beautiful old city on the river Danube. It's the centre of European (欧洲的) classical music. From 1750 a lot of composers and musicians came to study and work in Vienna. The most famous family of musicians was the Strauss family.

    There were two composers called Johann Strauss: a father and a son. The father, Johann Strauss the elder, wrote and played music for a classical dance—a waltz(华尔兹). His waltzes made him famous all over Europe.

    The son, Johann Strauss the younger, was even more successful and popular than his father. His most famous waltz was The Blue Danube. He wrote it in 1867. Strauss and Mozart were two of the most important composers.

    Mozart was born in Austria in 1756. Before he was six he played not only the piano, but also the violin. He wrote his first opera (歌剧) at the age of 12 and hundreds of beautiful pieces of classical music. But he died in 1791 when he was only 35. Some people say he was the greatest European composer.

A desert is a place where almost no rain falls. Only plants and animals that need very little water can live in a desert. Here are two types of deserts.

Sandy deserts are covered in hills of moving sand called dunes (沙丘). Very few plants grow in these hot and dry places. Camels (骆驼) are the desert animals. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}. A camel can go for days without food or water. It lives on the fat stored in its hump (驼峰). {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. These camels usually live in the desert of Africa and Australia. And some camels have two humps on their back. They live in Asia where the desert is cooler. They are known as Asian camels. A camel usually has thick eyelashes to protect its eyes from sand blown by the wind.

In some deserts, the land is rocky. They're called rocky deserts. Plants can store their own water grow in the dry and rocky deserts of North America. Rattlesnakes (响尾蛇) live in rocky deserts. A rattlesnake gets its name from the rattle (响环) on the end of its tail. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. Most cacti (仙人掌) grow in rocky desert. They grow very slowly, but they can live for 20 years. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. Some types of owls like to build their homes in them.
