Americans use many expressions with the word dog. People in the United States love their dogs and treat them well.
Some people say we live in a dog-eat-dog world. That means many people are competing for the same things, like good jobs. They say if a person wants to be successful he has to work like a dog. This means they have to work very, very hard. Such hard work can make people dog-tired. And, the situation would be even worse if they became sick as a dog.
Still, people say every dog has its day. This means that every person enjoys a successful period during his or her life. To be successful, people often have to learn new skills. Yet, some people say that you can never teach an old dog new tricks(手艺). They believe that older people do not like to learn new things and will not change the way they do things.
Dog expressions are also used to describe the weather. The dog days of summer are the hottest days of the year. A rain in summer may cool the weather. But we do not want it to rain too hard. We do not want it to rain cats and dogs.
(1)、If a person without lots of money wants to buy a car, he or she has to ______.

A、treat the dog well B、live with lots of dogs C、work like a dog D、become sick as a dog
(2)、The saying you can never teach an old dog new tricks tells us older people ______.

A、have more ways to do things B、do things more slowly C、dislike to learn new things D、know wonderful tricks
(3)、Which of the following is NOT true according to this passage?

A、Many dogs are loved and treated well by people in America. B、“Every dog has its day” means dogs are the most successful animal. C、“It rains cats and dogs” has the same meaning as “It rains heavily”. D、There are many expressions with the word dog in English.

Christmas for Americans is like the Spring Festival for Chinese people. It is a time when families get together and everyone is happy. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Before Christmas, everyone goes shopping to buy the gift for a family member, or a friend. Then they put the gifts under the Christmas tree. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

In the weeks before Christmas, the shops are full of wonderful things that children want.

{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Pets look cute, and some pets are not too expensive to buy — it is easy to buy one quickly. But before you buy a pet, you should ask yourself some important questions, such as" How long do I love this pet?"" Do I have enough time to keep it?"" Can the pet be happy in my family?"{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Because the family thinks the pets are not interesting any more, or they don't have enough time or money for the pets. So in the UK at Christmas time, you can see many signs(标牌) in pet shops:{#blank#}5{#/blank#} Think before you buy one!

A. It is also a time for giving gifts.

B. A pet is for life, not for Christmas.

C. Most people have to wait until Christmas morning before they can open the gifts.

D. Children often ask their parents for a pet, so pet shops are very popular.

E. It's sad but true that not long after Christmas, people don't want to keep them.

 阅读下面材料,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。

I am worried about my teeth. My front teeth are so big that they almost look like buckteeth(龅牙). When I take photos,I never laugh. I am also afraid my classmates will laugh at me. If I had smaller teeth like other people, I would be very happy.

( Mari, Lima, Peru)

I want to change my pessimistic attitude(悲观的态度) to life. Sometimes, things are not that bad, but I take everything too seriously. Once, I thought I didn't do well in an exam. I became very sad. But when I saw the result, it was not as bad as I thought. I worried about it too much. I think I shouldn't be so pessimistic.

( Troy, London, UK)

I want to change my bad temper(脾气). I often get angry and hurt the people I love. Every time my mother cares about me, I think she talks too much. Sometimes, I even argue with her. But I know     ▲    . I shouldn't do that. I will try to change my temper.

( Jake, Ottawa, Canada)

I often dream about having long legs. They would make me look more beautiful, and help me run faster. I like running and always join the running races at school. But other runners always pass me during the big race. I try my best, but it doesn't work because of my short legs. So I want to have longer legs.

Confucius said:" If a gentleman, not caring for food or housing, is diligent(勤勉)with what he does, careful with what he says and rectifies(纠正)himself with a worthy, he can be regarded as a good learner. "

In the West, people pay too much attention to being eloquent(能言善辩的). {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. However, Confucius didn't think so. He believed that gentlemen are supposed to choose their words carefully, even if that may make people feel bored.

Confucius had such beliefs because he thought that words are important and that they should follow after etiquette(规矩). {#blank#}3{#/blank#}. He said that gentlemen should not be lazy and need to focus on their work to improve themselves.

These rules for gentlemen's words and actions have influenced Chinese people for a long time. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}.

Of course, as culture has developed over time, we are also supposed to view(看待)his words critically(批判性地){#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

A. But he also put forward his idea of what gentlemen should do: work hard.

B. There are different answers to this question.

C. Let's find out the answers from Confucius, one of the greatest teachers in ancient China.

D. Today, many Chinese people still prefer to have a practical(务实的) spirit rather than say beautiful words.

E. Choosing our words and actions according to the situation is also a form of wisdom(智慧).

F. They believe that how someone says something is more important than what is said.
