People in Firenze are talking happily about the new shopping mall. The new shopping mall is just outside the city, next to the city's train station. And over 70 stores are open in the mall.

People like going shopping there because there are two big supermarkets.There are also many clothes stores for them. There's a bookshop, and there are two glasses stores. There are two toy stores, and there are seven restaurants.There's even a large cinema.

Almost everyone in Firenze is excited because the new shopping mall is now open. But some people are unhappy. Do you know who they are? They are the owners(店主) of the stores in the center of the city. Many people aren't shopping in their stores but at the new mall.

The Week Junior is hosting the Young Food Writer competition. Set up in 2008, it is the only national food writing competition that is for children and young people up to the age of18.

To be winning, write a short story around the theme （主题） of "Food and Heroes （英雄）". The hero could be anyone you want, yourself, a friend, a family member or a sports person. No matter who it is, write about what role food plays in life. For example, do you have a family member who cooks something to make you feel better when you're sick or help you get through your hardest times?

The competition has four different age categories （类别）, each with their own word limit（限制）. 

10 and under — at least 250 words

11—13— at least 500 words

14—16— at least 750 words

17—18— at least 1,000 words

I'm Laura，a robot（机器人）. I can tidy rooms. Say"Clean！" to me and I can do it. 

Look! A computer and some books are on the desk. A blue schoolbag, a basketball and a box are under the desk. What can you see on the bed? A white phone. A notebook, two pencils and a pen are on it too. "Clean！"It's time to do my job（工作）. 

Now look! The books are in the bookcase, and the basketball is in the box. The phone is on the desk, but you can't see it. It is behind the schoolbag. In the schoolbag are the school things——the pen, the pencils and the notebook.

There are many deserts on the earth. And here are some facts you may find interesting. 

What are deserts like?

Deserts can be hot and dry places. Rain may not fall there for months or years. Some deserts are sandy and stony (多石的). Deserts can also be very windy places. The wind can change the shape of the deserts. It moves sand around from place to place. 

Temperatures in the deserts can vary very much. During the daytime, the temperature may reach 40℃ even in the shade (阴凉处). At night, deserts can become very cold. In winter there may even be a frost(霜冻) in the early morning. 

Living in the deserts

The camel is sometimes called"the ship of the desert". It stores food in its hump (驼峰) and can go for days without water. It has large feet which help it not to fall into the soft sand. Its long eyelashes keep out the sand during sandstorms. 

An oasis is an area of the desert where water may be found. The water may be in pools or under the ground. People and animals visit an oasis to find something to eat and drink. Plants grow at an oasis. Some farmers are able to grow crops there. 

The Arabian Desert

The Arabian Desert lies between the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. In some parts of the desert, it is too hot for people to live. Oil was discovered under parts of the desert. This oil has made some countries in the area very rich. Much of the money has been spent building fine cities with lovely parks and lakes, and people live a comfortable life there.
