When I was about 12, I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings(缺点). Sometimes she said I was thin. Sometimes she said I was lazy. Sometimes she said I wasn't a good student. Sometimes she said I talked too much, and so on. I tried to put up with(忍受) her as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to my father with tears in my eyes.
He listened to me quietly, and then he asked, "Are the things she said true or not? Mary, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said."
I did as he told me and to my surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true.
I brought the list back to my dad. He refused to take it. "That's just for you," he said. "You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be helpful to you. Don't shut your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you think is right."
Many years have passed. The situation often appears in my mind. In our life we often meet with some trouble and we often go to someone and ask for advice. For some advice you will treasure(珍惜) all your life!

Fashionable clothes, new mobile phones and holiday: do they make you happy?What are the most important things in life? Researchers in Britain asked 5,000 girls and boys aged 10-15 this question. The answer is " the simple things " are the most important.

Friends, a good home life and sports make children happy. They say these things are more important than money. I'm very pleased that a lot of children understand what is good for them and what is bad for them.

What about the Internet? Do Facebook and YouTube make children happy? Do happy children spend lots of time online? The researchers asked children about it and they learnt something very interesting.Children who use the Internet for only one hour a day are happy, but children who spend lots of time online aren't very happy. This is because the don't have time for other activities that can make them happy. For example, they don't play a sport, ride their bike or meet their friends.

But it isn't only activities with friends that make children happy.

Children who have their own bedroom are happier. Maybe when they share a bedroom with a brother or sister, there are lots of fights! Food is also important, too. Children who don't eat fruit and vegetables every day, or children who have a lot of fast food are usually less happy. Are you eating something bad for you now? Stop! It's bad for your health and your happiness.

So, who is happier-girls or boys? Girls aged 10-12 are the happiest, but girls aged 13-15 are the least happy. The researchers says the older girls are unhappier for two reasons. Firstly, their parents are worried about their friends and they don't want them to go out a lot. Secondly, the older girls start to worry about how they look. Boys don't usually have this pressure.

What about you? Do you agree with the British children?

 阅读下列短文,从下面每小题所给的A、B、CD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

Theo works days, nights, and weekends in the tulip, fields in the Netherlands and never feels tired. How is this possible? Theo is an AI robot that looks fo sick flowers each spring.

The work stops viruses(病毒)from spreading among the plants. The robot looks for troubled tulip bulbs(鳞茎) and kills them if necessary. They are removed (去除) from the healthy ones,in a processing center after the harvest.

There are 45 robots like Theo working in the tulip fields of the Netherlands. Their job becomes important as the winter turns to spring and the busiest season nears. People come from around the world to see the colorful flowers.

This is the second season that Allan Visser has used a robot. He said it is very costly-the same as sports car-about $200, 000. In the past, knowledgeable farmers would walk the fields looking for tulips that showed signs of sickness. "I prefer to have the robot because a sports car doesn't take out thesick tulips from our field, " he said "Yeah, it is expensive, but there are fewer and fewer people who can really see the sick tulips.

Erik de Jong, the manager of the company that makes the robots, said all of the knowledge they use in the computer program comes from tulip farmers—farmers like Theo van der Vourt. He is the farmer after whom the robot is named.

Van der Vourt retired(退休)after 52 years of looking for sick flowers in his fields. "It's fantastic"he said, "It sees just as much as I see. "
