Canada Day

      Since 1982, July 1st has been officially known as Canada Day. Canadians of all ages take part in this festival across the country.
　　Canada Day is the year's biggest national party. In many towns and cities, the government organizes a lot of events, often outdoors. These include parades（游行）, concerts, festivals, firework displays and ceremonies for new Canadian citizens（公民）. The celebrations often have a patriotic mood. Canada's national flag, a symbol for Canada Day, can be seen everywhere and a lot of people paint their faces red and white, which are Canada's national colors. The celebrations in Ottawa, Canada's capital city, are especially grand and exciting.
　　In the province of Quebec, many home rentals（租赁）start on July 1st and last for exactly one year, and many people in Quebec spend Canada Day moving from one house to another. So in Quebec, Canada Day is also known as Moving Day.
　　Many organizations, businesses and stores are closed this day. Only some bookstores, ho spitals and gas stations may be open. Post offices are closed, too. As Canada Day falls in the Canadian summer holiday period, all schools are closed as well. In some areas, special services are provided for large events. The concerts, parades and festivals may cause some traffic jams.

Diaojiaolou, also called Diaolou, is a traditional house in southern China. You can find many of these houses beside a river or in the mountainous areas of Yunnan, Guangxi, Hunan and Sichuan. This type of building is popular among the Miao, Zhuang, Buyi, Dong, Shui, and Tujia peoples.

Diaojiaolou dates back to hundreds of years ago. When ancient Chinese pioneers moved from northern to southern China, they met many difficulties. They suffered a lot from the beasts (猛兽), snakes, and insects in the mountain forests. At first, they set fire to keep beasts away, but they were still often bitten by snakes. Then an old smart leader in the village invented Diaojiaolou. They are in fact 100% wooden houses built on silts (泥沙). These buildings are usually two to three storeys high. The whole house is really strong. Even if one of the stilts (支柱) was destroyed, the house would remain standing.

The stilt houses have many advantages. In ancient times, these buildings would provide protection from beasts. Nowadays they continue to provide protection from snakes and insects. What's more, these buildings help prevent humidity-related (湿度相关的) illnesses that are common in southern China. In the mountainous areas of southern China, people can't endure the wet ground in summer, so living on high floors is a wise choice.

And the special buildings are in perfect harmony (和谐) with the beautiful scenery—small bridges, flowing water, and green mountains. And many stilt buildings are hidden in ancient trees and bamboos, like traditional Chinese landscape paintings.

Studies have shown that certain colors can have an influence on marks. A survey was done among some college students. They were divided into three groups. Numbers in red, green or black were shown to different groups before a test. The results showed that students who saw the red numbers before the test scored lower than those who saw the green or black numbers. Cold colors like blue seem to have a different influence. They are relaxing and increase creativity.

Hello, I'm Tom. I go to McDonald's farm today. There is a vegetable garden and a fruit garden on the farm. First I go to the vegetable garden. The potatoes are big and brown. The tomatoes are red, yellow and green. They are tasty (美味的). The green beans are so long and green. Then I go to the fruit garden. The watermelons are so big and sweet. The strawberries are red and sweet. But the grapes are green and small, they are not ready. There is an animal field, too. There are white horses and black horses. Look! Are those ducks? No, they aren't. They are hens. The hens are fat. I can see fourteen sheep over there. They baa and baa (咩咩叫) everywhere. The farm is so fun. I like it very much.
