Yesterday the police were joined by more than 20 volunteers in the continuing search for the two missing teenagers, Vicky Gray and Tom Hunter, and their guide, Gavin Jones. The police said that they had disappeared during an adventure tour of Cape York Peninsula.

This was the second day of the search and the police were now very worried about the safety of the three missing people.

The police said that the search had covered a wide area, but the rain forest was thick and their work was made harder by the recent rain. Later on Chief Inspector (警官) Roger Fleet said, “The travellers had a radio with them. If they had been in trouble, they would have called us.”

The three travellers left Cooktown very early on Saturday morning in a Toyota car. They took a small dirt road that runs down to the Daintree River, a dangerous river full of crocodiles (鳄鱼). Chief Inspector Roger Fleet said the tourists wouldn't have got into trouble if they had stayed on the main road.

A photo of Vicky and Tom was found by a policeman under the “Be Careful about crocodiles” sign near the river. Why was the photo left behind? This is just one of the unanswered questions. Other questions are: Why was the photo left behind? Why was the Toyota parked and locked at the edge of the rain forest? The police said that the travellers had left a map of the area behind. Why? Why had someone drawn a cross on the point where the car is? Is this a sign? What does it mean? If anyone can give information or has seen these three young people, contact the local police in Cooktown.

The Last Leaf is a short story written by US writer O. Henry, one of the most famous short story writers in history. Let's find out part of the story in the following excerpt(节选).

Sue looked out of the window. All she saw was an old yellow and green ivy(常春藤) plant. The half-dead plant had few leaves on it because of the autumn winds.

"There are only five now, " said Joanna. "Five what, dear? What are you counting?"

"The ivy leaves, " replied Joanna. "When the last one goes, I'll die. I've known that for two days. Didn't the doctor tell you about it?"

"Joanna, don't say that. Now, have some soup and I'll finish my picture. "

"I don't want any soup, " said Joanna, looking out of the window. "Now there are only four. ""Joanna, dear, try to sleep. I must ask Mr Berman to come up. I want to draw a picture of him as a poor old farmer. "

Mr Berman, who was over 60 years old, lived downstairs. He was a painter too. Sue told him all about what Joann a said.

"She can't really think that this will happen! The poor woman, " he cried.

...

Finally, there was only one last leaf on the ivy plant. After a few windy days, the leaf was still there.

"Sue, " said Joanna, "I've been a bad girl. That last leaf is telling me that it was very wrong of me to want to die. Bring me some soup, dear. "

The next day, the doctor said, "She's out of danger. But poor Mr Berman downstairs are dying. There is no hope for him, I'm afraid. "

That afternoon Sue went into Joanna's bedroom. "Joanna, dear, Mr Berman died today. And do you know why? One terrible cold and wet night, he took a ladder(梯子) and some green and yellow paints and he climbed up. Look at the last ivy on the wall! Why didn't it ever move in the wind? Can't you see? It was Mr Berman's last great picture. "

"Are you listening, Simon?" Mrs. Jacobs asked.

Simon hardly ever listened in class. 1 was so much better. He wanted to be heard!

"2 you listen, you'll learn something." Mrs. Jacobs said. She tried every day, but 3 never paid attention (集中注意).

That evening, Simon started to feel a little sick (生病的).

The next 4 , when he opened his mouth to say, "Good morning," words didn't come out.

Simon's mother looked at him. "Honey, you've lost your voice (声音)."

"Can I stay at home?" He tried to ask his mother, but 5 came out. Instead (相反), his mother sent him to school.

"I'm sick. I can't talk." Simon tried to say 8 but no one could understand. He wrote it down instead.

Everyone started talking at once. They were excited, worried, and surprised.

Erin Jackson is a sports lover. Almost when Jackson could walk, she began to roller skate(滑旱冰) with a pair of skates. She rolled up and down the street. By middle school, she has become a "rink(溜冰场) mouse" at the local rink.

Years later, Jackson kept training for about 50 weeks in one year, from summer to winter, from making her body stronger to improving her skating skills, and from land to ice. During that time, Jackson paid close attention to what she ate to stay healthy. It can help her reduce the chance of getting hurt. After a game, she drank juice to help with pain and sleep. This made her get back to perfect condition faster for tiring training the next day.

Jackson kept her usual sleep, breakfast, and warm-up. She believed that her body needed to be ready to skate well, just like a common day.

As a player of the US national team, Jackson took part in the 2022 Winter Olympic Games and got the first place. In the interview after that, Jackson said, "I enjoy playing on the ice, but I have to say that it's a difficult sport. The biggest challenge(挑战) is to be patient enough to slowly improve my skating skills."
