Leoh Ming Pei, one of the world's best-knownarchitects (建筑师), left over 50 designs during his longcareer. These stand as his gifts to the world.

The glass pyramid of the Louvre Museum in Paris, France might be Pei's most famous work. Back in the1980s, the Louvre Museum was having trouble with traffic. To solve the problem, Pei planned to dig an undergroundhall and place a glass pyramid on top. Many people didn't like the idea. They said it was too modern for the classical museum. However, the idea turned out to be a success. It is not only the museum's main entrance, but also a huge skylight (天窗).

In 2006, Pei was invited to build a museum in his hometown Suzhou. He tried to include local and historical ideas in his design. He built small halls with traditional white walls and dark roofs, just like the classical Chinese gardens. Moreover, the lines and windows in the roof bring something modern to the museum.

The famous Lion Grove Garden (狮子林) in Suzhou used to be owned by Pei's family. Pei spent some summers there as a child. Maybe that was when Pei developed his interest in architecture. Pei spent most of his adult years in the US, first studying at universities and then working in different places. Even though he was trained in the US, the beauty of Chinese Classics was well displayed in many of his designs. "I've never left China because home is a place your heart always belongs to," Pei once said.

Over the last century, many building trends (潮流) have come and gone. But the works of Pei have not. "A lasting architecture has to have roots." Pei once told The New York Times. That may explain why he and his works have stood the test of time.

Ten years ago, I took up studying luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others always experience ill luck. Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them take part in my experiments(实验).

I carried out a simple experiment to discover why there were differences in their ability to find lucky chances. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying, "Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50." This message took up half of the page and was more than two inches(英尺) high. It was looking at everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people tended to(倾向于) miss it and lucky people tended to notice it.

Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss out on chances. Lucky people tend to be more relaxed and open. They can see everything that is in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for.

My research shows that lucky people live by several principles(原则). Here are some of these principles:

* Listen to your gut instincts(直觉) — they are often right.

* Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought patterns.

* Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well.

* See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.

Our deepest fear is not that we are not good enough. Our deepest fear is our unbounded(无限的) power. "It is not our darkness that frighten us, but our light. " Originally written by Gabriel Bo.

One of the most common social fears is that we are not good enough. Perhaps you feel you won't impress others because they are more confident,1 , or attractive than you. Such thinking is wrong. The secret of doing well is2 yourself as you are.

When I was a student, I kept a diary filled with3 memories. Some were painful memories from childhood when I felt hurt, clouded, lonely and unsafe. I often4 pieces of dreams and personal feelings of anger and hate in my diary. Sometimes I also 5 some interesting things I experienced in it.

Then a terrible thing happened. While having dinner one night, I6 I had left my diary in the coat room outside the school dining hall. I'm afraid that somebody might read it and find out the truth about me, I 7 back, but it was gone.

Weeks passed, and finally I 8 hope of ever finding it again. A month later, I was hanging up my jacket in the same place when I saw my brown worn9 , just where I'd left it. Nervously I read through the pages and found that a10 had written the following, "God bless you. I'm a lot like you, only I don't keep a diary, and I'm thankful to know there are others like me. I hope everything goes11 for you. "

Tears came out to my eyes. I had12 thought that anyone could know my feelings in my heart and also13 things just like the way I did.

No matter what you are like, whether you're rich or poor, excellent or14 , there are people like you. 15 away your fears of not measuring up(达到), and accept yourself as you are.
